What is a doula?

The word "Doula" comes from a Greek word meening "woman who serves".  

A Doula is a woman, often a mother herself, who is knowledgable, and experienced in childbirth. She supports a woman during pregnancy, the entire labor, and postpartum.

What does a Doula Do?

  • a birth doula...
  • recognizes childbirth as a key life experience that the mother will remember for the rest of her life.
  • understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor.
  • assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their birth plans.
  • stays by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire labor.
  • provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make the best decisions for her situation.
  • perceives her role as nurturing and protecting of the woman's memory or her birth experience...
