The Whitton family name has been around for hundreds of years and has stood the test of time.. I am very proud to present my branch of that family tree.
The information that I have has taken several years to locate and sometimes decipher. I do know that the family name originated in Great Britain. I haven't pinpointed it yet, but I am quite sure that it is either England or Scotland.
During my research I have found that there are several communities in Britain that bear the Whitton name. I have also found one in the U.S.
For example:
Whitton, North Lincolnshire, England has been in existence since 48 A.D.
The name means roughly "One from the River Whit", although I have yet to locate a river of that name. I recently recieved the following from a man named Tom Smith.
"The similarly named villages in Cleveland and Suffolk could mean 'white farmstead' or 'farmstead of a man called 'Hwita', but our Whitton - Whitton on the Humber - Witenai 1086 (Domesday Book) probably means 'White Island' from OE hwit-ęg where 'ęg' indicates 'island', or 'dry ground in a marsh'. "
My research is not the best and there are possibly some errors to my work, if you have any information that I can use or any corrections to my work, please e-mail me at the below address or sign my guestbook.
