DIE HARD 4.0 movie review.
It's been a while since I saw the first three Die Hard's as I was more of a fan of the Terminator / Predator films.
I don't know I guess no-one kicked butt like Arnie and also I've never bought into the fact that a man can't
sustain that amount of injuries and keep going unless he is on drugs or a cyborg from the future. Anyway I thought
the special effects were impressive, storyline of Cyber terrorism put a modern twist to an overdone genre.
Bruce is still the right man in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you are an action junkie this film definately
delivers. Not too many other films where the hero surfs a falling Harrier jet that's for sure. Check it out. ***
UpDate 13th of January, 2008 - MY MOVIE REVIEWS!!!
Transformers - ( Action / SCI FI ) Although I wasn't really a diehard fan of the toon when a kid...don't know
how I missed it - musta been locked in a cage or something, I do know that what little I did see was interesting
robot characters where the unique personality of each Transformer was equally as important as all the cool ways
he transformed into his vehicle form. "Starscream was a backstabbing 2IC, Soundwave was just cool, Megatron
-psychotic, Optimus Prime-standard hero.": This pretty much sums up what I remember about them. In the
movie, I felt like the characterisation of the Transformers was touched on but still lacking. The movie does make
up for this in the human characters though with actors who portray the human versus robot struggle with skill -
I still would have enjoyed more soldier footage combating the 'Formers. The special effects are awesome - I
love the desert gunfight between the soldiers and Scorpion Transformer - most cool. This movie could have
been only a little bit better by sticking closer to the original Transformer characters but overall it's a fine film from
Michael Bay...(and to be honest) - there's only a few of those isn't there people? *** and a half
TMNT - (CGI children) Being a Turtle fan from way back, you hopefully will excuse me for giving this film an okay
rating. The storyline of the Turtles moving on from their heroic crimefighting beginnings and the Turtle family unit
slowly drifting apart were a good deeper level of storytelling that you rarely find in the dumbed down genre of CGI
animation. It is obvious that the director had collaborated well with Peter Laird (co-creator of TMNT) as the dark
violence of the original TMNT comic circa 1984-89 can be felt in the environment of shadows etc. This is almost
as far as you can go with a kids film without risking increasing the rating higher than PG. The detail to graphics and
attention to making this CGI world slightly grainier/worn makes it a better film than most CGI fare. Where I think
the film is affected is the bad characters are simply a bit too cartoony / wussy when compared to well fleshed out
evil dudes like The Shredder etc that held that tinge of controlled violent potential. Even the original TMNT (1990)
had an advantage because they had the Shredder to increase the fear element. As the baddies move further from
the Ninjutsu origin of the first story - they seem less of a threat to the Turtles and New York. I guess there is still
something compelling and sinister about a Ninja as a serious foe when not depicted as a full-on parody.
*** and a half
The Descent-(horror) This movie made on a cheaper budget to The Cave makes much more use of the simple
claustrophobia and darkness the selected stage / environment lends. Also making ALL characters female simply
encourages the viewer to invest more concern in each personality's fate and so maybe this film is one of the few
that can even say it comes close to rivaling the terror that was the original ALIEN film. Not to givetoo much away,
this film's ending seriously should never have been changed to the happier, stale U.S. version...can't test audiences
handle a mean twist over there anymore? Great movie - it may bring on the C.H.U.D. re-boot films - fingers crossed.
