December 2: Championships
David 11/21/2006: Ripped the Savanna video off our DVD, that is now also on Youtube and in the Videos section. Stay focused and keep practicing, Championships and Honor Band alike aren't far away.
David 11/11/2006: Mira Mesa video is now available; individual clips can be found on the TEMPO page and an edited-together version is hosted on Youtube for the time being.
David 8/23/2006: Converted current show pieces to mp3 format in the music section, so they can be put on a CD or another media player, also did some other minor updates. Also, if you have not signed up for the forums yet, please do so.
David 8/10/2006: Little update to deal with the problems with the forums and CHARMS- the links to those areas now open in new windows, so the URL cloaking shouldn't interfere with login.
David 8/6/2006: Added in some more new stuff to the IMC portion, as well as another little guide on getting started in the forums. Recommended reading for any new user. Quick note: If the URL cloaking is causing problems with refreshing, CHARMS, or the forums, access this site through www.freewebs.com/whhsband rather than whhs.guhsd.net/band.
David 8/4/2006: Yesterday I made the template, today I put in the content. All the sections work now (except for resources, since nothing applicable is available yet). Please talk to me if you find any broken links or other problems with the site, or have any comments, additions or suggestions. All the old content is off of the webspace, but I saved a backup of the old site on my hard disk; you know, just in case.
David 8/3/2006: The old webpage was scrapped, and replaced with this new model, which should optimally make this place a little more useful and accessible. The forums, too, were rebuilt. Have a look around. Also, welcome to any new freshmen that may have found their way here. Band Camp is coming soon, so don't forget to come prepared.
December 2: Championships
For over 19 years, the West Hills Instrumental Music Department has been a member of the Grossmont District's music community. Since then, we have always been growing, earning a reputation as a high-quality program. We have recieved an invitation to the annual SCSBOA championships at Long Beach every year since the competition first began, and won 1st place for all of Division 1A in the 2003 season.
The band travels all over California for the events it participates in, and for its spring tour it has visited places such as Las Vegas, Disneyland, Six Flags, San Francisco and Arizona.
Our director is Mr. R. Andrew Nelson, who has led this program for the past six years. A group of advisors provide assistance: Barbie Anthony instructs the colorguard, John and Erica Yenter teach battery and pit percussion, respectively, Nico Salvador is our marching advisor and Marina Williamson serves as assistant director. A handful of supporters in the community also lend their expertise on occasion, such as Roy Anthony, Keith Sipos, as well as Carl Reed, who was an advisor in the 2003-2004 school year. All of these people, as well as the student leadership team known as IMC and our booster organization, TEMPO, are dedicated to helping the West Hills Band, and should be given a great deal of credit.
In addition to competitions, the band performs at various functions throughout the school year, such as sports, school and community events. If you would like our band to play at a function for your sport or other school activity, contact our director and an arrangement can often be made.
Starting in 2004, the band has hosted its own SCSBOA festivals, taking advantage of its spacious theatre and well-designed performing arts building. It also hosts an afterschool music program, teaching elementary school children how to play in the absence of adequate music education in their home district.
By standing by its traditions of excellence, dedication and spirit, the West Hills Band hopes to create leaders through music education for years to come.
