By Lorrie Russ A few weeks ago I learned that Leigh was fostering a giant that was in need of rescuing. Leigh and I "chatted" for a few moments and Leigh told me all of the information that she had gathered concerning the background of the giant. The giant is a spayed female that is approximately a year old with a harsh coat and natural ears. She was found on Colorado Hwy 115 in late Febuary to early March. Someone picked her up and took her to the local humane shelter. From the shelter she was adopted by a family, however, she did not work out with them because she continually ran off while everyone was gone to work or to school. The wife opted to place the giant in a boarding kennel instead of back at the shelter and called Giant Rescue. Carolyn contacted Leigh sence she was closer to the area. Leigh went to the kennel to see the giant and brought her home. Leigh fostered the giant for approximately three weeks. At that point is when I heard about the girl. After talking with Leigh several times I asked about how to go about adopting a rescue. Leigh, Carolyn, Connie Weaver and I began the adoption procedure. Leigh, Kile and Doris (a friend of mine) and I met in Amarillo on May 15th so that I could bring her home. Presently I am working towards Indefinite Listing Privilege from AKC and Limited Privilege from UKC so that she can be shown in obedience and agility. Her name listing will be Loreley's Gretchen von Amarillo - Gretchen for short. Gretchen will begin her obedience classes on June 22nd. Leigh told me many wonderful aspects Gretchen's personality to which she has lived up to every one and more so. Gretchen is willing to please and quick to learn new concepts. She fit into my animal family like a hand to a glove. It is so wonderful to have Giant sounds in my home once again. Thank You Carolyn, Leigh and Connie. The above article appeared in Giant Steps, a puplication of The Giant Schnauzer Club of America, in the July/August 1998 issue, Volume 36, No. 4.
