Why does TV pay so much for the right to show sports? Because they can sell advertising for millions of dollars.
Why can they sell advertising for so much? Advertising works.
Why does it work? Advertising influence people to buy their products. Advertising creates the desire and establishes a need for the product.
If TV advertising is so effective, why doesn't TV programming influence people to change their behavior?
Many argue that adults know they are watching fiction. Because of this, it won't effect them.
TV acts on us by ridiculing the morals and standards we live by. We may not agree with what we are watching but the ridicule of our values weakens our moral strength. It weakens our willingness to resist. TV causes us to think, "this is the way most people are." We accept the abnormal as normal. It causes our mind to dwell on evil things instead of something productive. It wastes our time.
"Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worth of praise, let your mind dwell on these things." (Philippians 4:8 NASB)
Shut off the TV sewer tap and open your life to peace and satisfaction by the direction of the Lord.
