How do we weather the storms of life?

Dark clouds loomed off to the west. The wind shook the tree tops. A tornado had hit the area a week ago and now storm warnings were sounding again. We decided that it was time to head for the storm shelter.

I had tied a tarp over our tent, to protect it from rain. The ropes were well tied at least that was what I thought. The camp manager offered us the office basement for shelter. Some of the other campers joined us. The storm came in all its fury. Rain fell in sheets. Lightening and thunder accented the storms anger. It finally passed and we returned hopefully to our camp site.

When we got back our tent was still standing, but the tarp was on the ground. My first thought was, that the rope broke or came loose. Inspecting the rope I saw that the grommets had held. There was no break in the rope. What had failed was the tarp itself. It had ripped down one side. Talking to someone later I was told, that to secure a tarp as a canopy, sow a rope around the edges to give it strength.

Just as the tarp failed in a way that was unexpected. Christians may have beliefs that aren't accurate. The Scripture says that people perish for a lack of knowledge. (Hosea 4:6)

We may not feel that our beliefs are worth a lot on a day to day basis. But if you think about it, everything that you do is based on what you believe. Some live by the Schlitz philosophy which states, “You only go around once in life, so grab for all the gusto you can get.” Or as the Bible puts it “eat and drink and be merry.” (Luke 12:19) Those who understand spiritual things know that you reap what you sow. Our beliefs are shown by our actions and words.

We go to church even when we don't feel like it because we know that God is there and fills us with spiritual food. We serve God because His love has changed our lives. We want to give our lives back to Him. We work because we want to meet our needs and those of others. We don't let our kids run the streets because if we aren't actively involved in their lives someone else will.

Base your life on sound spiritual precepts. Listen to wise counsel. Learn all you can. Wisdom is better than money. (Prov.3:14) Fear the Lord for that is the beginning of wisdom. (Prov.1:7)

Jesus is a sure foundation. You can count on Him being there for you when the chips are down. He will never leave you nor forsake you. He is a strong tower against the enemy. He is a well of water in a dry place. He is a comfort to the comfortless. He wrote the Scriptures and will explain them to you by His Spirit.

Weather life's storms with a sure foundation.
