What are the elements that we can learn from? First, the lamb or goat had to be one year old. (Ex. 12:5) This may signify that Jesus had to wait until he was of age. He was 30 years old when His ministry started. He died at 33 for a sacrifice for us.
The offering was not to have any spot or blemish. It was to be perfect. Jesus lived like we have through the trials and hardships of life, yet without sin. He lived as a man so that He might identify with us. "For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted."( Heb. 2:18)
The blood of the offering was to be put on the door posts and lintel. This blood was put there so that the death angel would pass over the family and not kill the first born. (Ex. 12:7,13) The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin. It is because of the blood that the people were spared in the Old Testament and it is because of the blood in our life that we are spared the wrath of God at the judgment. (Eph. 1:7) We are not only spared judgement but we can come boia'iy into His throne room. (Heb. 4:16)
Blood was placed over the door post and lintel. The door signifies the place that you can enter a person's home. Our heart signifies the place where our spirit lives. The blood of Jesus cleanses our hearts from the sin that has engulfed us.
The blood was applied with hyssop. (Ex. 12:22) What is hyssop? It is just a common shrub growing in the field. There was no fancy ornament that was used or special wand that they waved to spray the blood just common hyssop. It is the same with us today. Many would try to make more out of salvation than just believing in Jesus. But God has chosen the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. He has chosen faith that anyone could have. We all are capable of having faith. You don't have to go on a pilgrimage, or do any hard works for salvation, simply have faith and rely in Jesus work on the cross. God does no want to exclude those /ith little talent or means.
The flesh was to be eaten that same night, (v. 10) Today is the day of salvation. Don't wait until a more convenient time. Christians are always to be looking for the Lord to come back. We are to be ready to serve God in any manner or place that He chooses and to be ready as a solider. "No solider in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a solider. (2 Tim. 2:4)
The Passover meal was to be eaten with unleavened bread. This is to signify that the Israelites were different than the Egyptians. We are different than the world. In the spirit our citizenship is not of this world but in heaven. (1 Cor. 5:7) "Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts,. . .(Heb. 2:11)

Eat the passover dressed to go where Jesus leads.

The Passover lamb was to be eaten after it was cooked with fire, not boiled or raw. The fire can represent the Holy Spirit in our life. Reading the Bible without the Holy Spirit is dry and unproductive. It is the Holy Spirit who brings life. If we are out of the Spirit we are out of touch with Jesus in that point in time. Has the Holy Spirit touched you life today? Also the fire represents cleansing. It is the job of the Holy Spirit to convict of sin.
If there was anything that was left of the passover meal they were not to save it but to burn it with fire. We can't live on past blessings from God. We need a fresh word form God daily. When the Israelites tried to stock up on manna it became wormy after the second day. We can't store up spiritual food, we need to have it on a daily basis.
They were to eat the Passover dressed to leave. We are not be settled in this world. We should be ready to serve God as He leads us. "Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps alight." (Luke 12:35) Be ready to share the gospel, be in an attitude of prayer.
None of the bones of the sacrifice were to be broken. None of Jesus' bones were broken on the cross. The Roman soldiers were going to break Jesus' legs to speed His death. When they came to Him, He was already dead. Therefore they did not break His legs. (John 19:31-33) This was another aspect to show that there was to be no defect in the sacrifice.
The last supper was during the Passover. Now we have the Lord's supper. We now look back to the cross of Christ and not at the sacrifice that was foreshadowing the sacrifice of God's Son. There will be yet another change to this. It is the marriage supper of the Lamb that we will eat with Jesus in heaven. (Rev. 19:7-9) I have earnestly desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God. (Luke22:15,16; Matt. 26:29) Matthew 22:1-14 it tells a story of the Marriage of the King's son. This story of the wedding feast shows our need to be dressed in the righteousness of Jesus.
The great supper in Lk. 14:16-24 is a parable that teaches us to go and tell others about the great feast of celebration that we will have with Jesus. Bring the lost to Christ for salvation.
It is interesting to note that God relates to us by eating. In the Old Testament they ate the passover. After Christ's life we eat the Lord's supper. We will eat with Jesus in the celebration of our spiritual marriage.
"Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has make herself ready. And it was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. And he said to me, 'Write, blessed are these who are invited to the marriage supper of the lamb.' And he said to me. ' These are true words of God.'" (Rev. 19:7-9)
This is what God has been working towards down through the ages. He wants us to be united to Him and be in unity with Him.
I was sitting out on the driveway watching my son play with his car and listening to my wife and daughter play the piano. God has been good to me by giving me a family and I think that is how God feels about us. He is looking forward to having us with Him in heaven.
