The Name of Jesus
Believe in Jesus name
What does it mean to believe? To be persuaded and to place confidence in. To
trust. (Vines)
What is our part in believing? To look to Jesus and hope in Him.
What is the work of believing? To hope in, believe in Jesus in spite of the
circumstances. To trust what Jesus says.
Jn. 6:29 "... This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has
sent.,"
1 Jn. 3:23 We are commanded to believe in the Name of Jesus.
Jesus has delegated authority to us.

. . . baptize . . . teach.
Jn. 20:21" ... as the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
Jn. 17:18 "As Thou didst send Me into the world, I also have sent them into
the world."

ti
...

Jn. 14:14 If you ask Jesus anything in His name, He will do it.
"this is not a formula to be tacked on to the end of prayers, but means
praying for the same things which Christ would desire to see accomplished. It
is like using a power of attorney which a very dear loved one has given you."
(Ryrie)
We have authority using Jesus' name.
In the name of Jesus signifies obedience because we are representing Jesus and
doing things in His name. To use Jesus' name is to be in submission to God and
those God has put over us.
Jn. 14:14 Ask Jesus anything in His name and He will do it.
lCor.3:21-23 All things belong to us for use in God's kingdom.
Jn. 15:16 Does your fruit remain? If so, prayers in Jesus' name will be
answered.
Mark 9:38 cast out demons in Jesus' name.

Because we believe.

Jn 5:13 The Bible was written to those who believe in Jesus' name. Therefore
the promises in the Bible are for those who believe in the name of Jesus.

We are Christ's ambassadors, therefore we have the right to use Jesus' name.
An ambassador is a representative; he isn't bringing his own message. Ambassadors of Christ should bring a message of reconciliation. An ambassador has as his goal to be pleasing to the government.
(2 Cor. 5:9) This involves faith.
(Heb. 11:6) Faith involves reading the Bible and prayer and hearing from God. To be pleasing to God then involves obedience to God. There is an accountability of our actions, for all our works will be judged.
(2 Cor. 5:10) Obedience and the fear of the Lord come from discipline. (2 Cor. 5:11)
Ambassador - "The highest ranking representative appointed by one country or government to represent it in another." (Websters)
To be a senior, i.e. (by impl.) act as a representative (fig. preacher) (Strongs # 4243)
As we live for Jesus we can speak for Jesus.
We represent Christ as an attorney and as an ambassador.
We are to call on the name of Jesus. Acts 2:31, Joel 2:32 Rom. 10:13
Using the name of Jesus is delegated authority. Jesus only did what He was instructed by His Father. (Jn. 5:19,30;8:28) We are sent out into the World the same way that Jesus was sent out. (Jn. 20:21) So we too should have instructions from our Lord to act in His behalf. (Jn. 15:5,6)
Our legal right in Christ to use Jesus name (Matt. 18:19,20)
A life of service to God allows us to use Jesus' name.
We are sent the same way Jesus was sent. He was sent to do the will of the Father. (Jn. 5:30;6:38;4:34)
He was sent to lay His life down for us. We are sent to do the will of God and to lay our lives down at the cross.
(Jn. 20:21; 17:18 Lk.9:23 ) Love gives us the motivation to lay our lives down in service for Christ. Our life is found as we devote ourselves to Christ's service. (Matt. 10:38,39)
We can misuse the name of Jesus.
Restrictions to the effective use of Jesus' name.
Abide in the Word and Jesus. (Jn. 15:7)
Acts 19:13-15 To have authority in the name of Jesus we need to have a
relationship with Him. The seven sons of one Sceva did not.
Acting in presumption or arrogance. For example in President Carter's
administration Andrew Young represented him as an ambassador and was traveling
around Africa making official statements that did not represent President
Carter's policy- Because of this he had to be fired. We need to know what
God wants before we speak for Him. That is why it is important to be studying
the Bible and spending time in prayer with Him. As we have the leading of the
Spirit we have authority.
John 15 is in the context of John 14:14. Our answers come from abiding in the
vine.
Rev. 3:8 An open door is put before those who do not deny Jesus name. If we
deny the name of Jesus we will not be able to use it because there would be a

So instead of receiving glory and honor from others give God the glory, for in
reality He is the one that has blessed us. (James 1:17)
In Jesus' name, gives us access to God because our prayers are effective
through Jesus. Our sins are washed in the blood of Jesus as we repent-we are
justified and are able to move in the name of Jesus in obedience after
repentance. There is a standing in grace. Though there are restrictions, if
we are serving Christ we have free access and unlimited answers fran Jesus as
we believe. "If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it." (Jn. 14:14)

The name and the character or spirit must be in harmony. So it is with Jesus and the believer: we are one, have one life, one Spirit with Him; for this reason we may cccne in His Name. Our power in using that Name, whether with God, or men, or devils; depends on the measure of our spiritual life-union.
Union of love. A bride becomes united to the bridegroom, she gives up her own name, to be called by his, and has now the full right to use it. She purchases in his name.
The bearing of the name of another supposes my having given up my own, and with it my own independent life. Everything depends on our own relation to the Name.
The power of the Name must rule in the whole life; only then will it have power to pray. It is not to the lips but to the life God looks to see what the Name is to us. When it is everything to me, it will obtain everything for me.
The Name of Jesus is its own safeguard. It is a spiritual power which no one can use further than he obtains the capacity for, by living and action in that Name.
It is through the Spirit that the Name which is above every name is heaven, will take the place of supremacy in our heart and life too.
