BIBLE MEMORY

A lot of people say they can't memorize Scripture, but if you know your phone number and your address you can! Scripture memory is obtainable if you follow a few basic steps.

Memorizing Bible verses is easier if you read one version of the Bible. Then when you read over a passage many times, you become familiar with it. I would suggest writing your verses on 3 X 5 cards and keeping them in a recipe box. The Navagators have a smaller size card that many people like to use.

Two approaches can be used in memorization. You may memorize according to the subject, or memorize verses that touch your heart. The second way is easier because you are memorizing verses that you have meditated on. Memorizing Scripture according to subjects allows you to draw on them to help others when that subject comes up.

OK, you have a Scripture that you want to memorize.

How do you go about learning it?

  1. First write it down on a card.

  2. Put the reference at the top and bottom of the card.

  3. Say the reference 7 times, to get it fixed in your mind.

  4. Now say the reference and the first phrase over 7 times. Test yourself to see if you can say the reference and the first phrase without looking at the card.

  5. After you have successfully said these, say the next phrase seven times. Now test yourself to see if you can say the reference and the first two phrases, if you can, go on to the next phrase. If you can't say them successfully, review them until you can.

  6. Continue these steps until you have the whole verse memorized. Don't forget to say the reference before and after each verse.

  7. Review the verses that you have memorized for seven weeks. This is why it is good to memorize just 2 to 3 verses a week, so that you won't be bogged down in review. It is better to just learn a few verses a week, than to race through a lot of verses and get bogged down and quit.

  8. Each day review some of the verses that you have already mastered.

  9. If you are memorizing them by categories, at some time try to say the verses in a category without being prompted by the cards.

  10. One method that helps me remember references is to write all the verse references of a book or a group of books on one card and review them from that card.

It is helpful to write the subject of the verse on the card, and file your verses according to subjects. Then you can review them according to subjects. Or you can file them according to Bible order and write the references according to subjects on cards.
