David had fled from King Saul to the Land of the Philistines. He lived there and helped them. The Philistines decided to attack Israel and David went along. While David and his men were on their way, the Philistines decided that David and his men couldn't be trusted, so they sent them back. This was a blessing in disguise because, their home town of Ziglag was plundered by the Amalekites, and they took all their families captive.

The people spoke of stoning him. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

This is one of the areas in which David excels. We can learn to be victorious by studying his example. Counteract discouragement by remembering the things God has done for us in the past. Also, remember God's faithfulness to us through His word. Lamentations 3:21-23 gives some clues to how to do this. "This I recall to mind, therefore I have hope, the Lord's lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassion's never fail. They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness.
Remember the times God has been good to those in the Bible.
Don't allow yourself to be continually beat down by the circumstances around you. Look to God and seek Him. Meditate on the promises and let them encourage you. As you read the Bible mark the places that mean a lot to you, or the Lord has comforted you or directed you. Then go back to those places in time of need.
It is good to seek the Lord in time of need. Seek the Lord for help and pray to Him. Pray to God, letting Him know your requests. Pour your heart out in prayer to Him. Be thankful in your prayer for what God is doing in your life or will do (Philippians 4:6,7)
After seeking the Lord, David and his men set out to take back their families. They marched 60 miles and were tired, but they were marching again. David showed kindness to those who were too tired, letting them guard the baggage. The Lord gave them a great victory. They recaptured all their lost goods, plus more, and got back all their families; not one was lost.
Don't give up. Keep trusting the Lord. "For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His . . ." (2 Chronicles 16:9).
