2 Timothy Chapter 1
Devotional Commentary

My study style is mainly to let the Bible teach itself and I do this by cross reference mainly. Sometimes the Holy Spirit will jog my memory and I will be drawn to other scriptures that pertain to the passage I am meditating on.

My view of the Bible is it was written for the common man and can be understood by anyone that seeks for the truth of God with honest effort through the Bible.

2 Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus,

Paul is an apostle
Apostle is one that is sent forth.

Of Christ Jesus
You would think Paul was sent from Jesus or sent by Jesus. But he is of Jesus. He is part of Jesus and partakes of Jesus. He is in the vine. In business we say, “I'm with IBM or I'm with GE. That's a partial identification. Being of Christ is stronger.

By the will of God. Or through
In contrast to according to the will of God. So God is involved in accomplishing the work!

According to the promise of life
following the principals of the promise of life.
Romans 6:4 “Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we to might walk in newness of life.”

Death – died to sin
don't make provision to the flesh in regard to its lusts. Romans 13:14
Don't prepare to sin. Don't plan to sin.

The newness of life comes from Jesus in us.

We are doing the will of God by Christ's power as we die to our desires and live with the newness of life because we have put on Jesus.
Eph 6:11 Put on the full armor of God.
Helmet, breastplate, shield, sword, loin cloth, shoes, prayer.
Putting on the full armor of God is using the armor in life. Prayer is said to be the putting on but prayer needs to be of faith and faith needs to have love and love needs to have action. To put on the shield of faith is to believe God when He says something to us from the Bible. It is to act according to what He has said.

To put on the armor is like putting on an army uniform. We identify ourselves with Christian effort. To put on the armor of God is to imitate His example. To adopt His values and principals and to obey His commands. The armor is an analogy of war and being a solider.

V2 To Timothy, my beloved son:
Love for others is key and is a foundation of ministry.
Love is:
patient
Kind
not jealous
doesn't brag
not arrogant
not unbecomingly
does not seek its own
not provoked
does not take into account wrongs suffered
bears all things
believes all things
hopes all things
endures all things
love never fails
These are 15 things that define love.

Grace mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Grace – favor and spiritual blessing.
Mercy – Not judgment. God forgives and accepts us because of our faith in Jesus. Peace comes after mercy. Peace comes from being in Jesus during the storm. Jesus does not take away the trial but gives us a way to go through the trial. John 16:33 Jesus instructions will give us peace as we are in Him.

From our God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Can we be save if Jesus in not Lord?
What does Lord mean?
Lord means He owns us and He is the boss of our life. We are not our own but were bought with a price. What confuses people is Jesus does not act like an earthly lord. He does not lord it over us so to speak. Jesus desires for us to respond in love. He does not accomplish things by His command but by His counsel.

Verse 3 I thank God
Thankfulness should be a key aspect of our prayers. Without thankfulness we lose our alertness to the things of the spirit.

Psalms is full of examples Some of these are thankfulness in spite of rough situations.
Psalm 44 shows an example of looking to God even when our present situation is deplorable.

Thankfulness is an expression of faith.
When troubles come don't fret worry stew be fearful but consider Jesus and what He has done in history and for you. He will do it again.

Whom I serve with a clear conscience
Acts 23:1
1 Tim 1:5 1 of the 3 reasons to teach is to people will live with a clear conscience.
Live current obey always. Be quick to admit quilt repent easily

The way my forefathers did-
As I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day.

We should pray for each other. This shows Timothy was on Paul's heart. Do we pray? What occupies our heart is what we talk about and what we pray about.

v4 longing to see you.
Again Paul shows his love

even as I recall your tears
They were real with each other. Sharing joys and sorrows.

So that I may be filled with joy.
Again Paul lives for others and not himself.
It says in 1 Thes 3:8 “For now we really live if you stand in the Lord.” Paul thrives on the success of others and not his own desires. In other words Paul's desires were that others would succeed. He had set his goal that others would succeed. When they succeed he succeeds. O that we could live like this!

V5 For I am mindful of the sincere faith within
For Paul to be mindful of it, Timothy had to talk about it. If we don't talk about it, we don't believe it. It says in 1 Corinthians 4:13 “I believe therefore I spoke. Talking about our faith solidifies it and not talking abut it means its not there. How do we believe, when we want to but have doubts? Meditate on the word of God and pray over it. Confess the Scripture when doubts come and state that you are going to believe the word and not your fears.

which first dwelt in your grandmother and you mother.
Teaching kids you faith is very important. It should be our first step in discipleship. We start at Jerusalem Acts 1:5 then continue out. Our Jerusalem is our home and neighborhood. To teach spiritual things is to realize that we can't do anything in our strength. When we come to this realization then we will pray for help from the Spirit of God.

-I am sure its in you as well
The faith that his mother and grandmother had. They not only had faith, they confessed their faith and they had works to go along with their faith. Jesus is the high priest of our confession and we show love by our works. Faith is an energizer not an end in itself.

V6 kindle afresh the gift of God.
How do we kindle a gift of God?
Kindle – encourage
to arouse excite
preach the word in season and out of season. To kindle may be going from what is not felt to what is felt. To do what you don't want to do knowing you are called to do it. Isaiah 64:7 “There is no one who calls on Your name, who arouses himself to take hold of you.” To kindle is to realize a need for something and the only way I know of getting something from God is to go to Him and ask. Heb 4:16 go to the throne of grace to get help in time of need. God will give what we ask for in faith. Prayer that prevails will build faith and gain the answer.

-gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
Gen 48:14 bless others by putting hands on head
We have the ability to change things. It is our actions that bring results.
Ex 29:20 blood on thumb causes our actions to righteous.
Lev 4:15 LAY HNADS ON THE BULL OFFERING

For God has not given us a spirit of timidity but of power , love and discipline.

v7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity but of power , love and discipline.
Timidity is contrasted with power love discipline
If you loved others, had discipline in your life would there be power?
Love is tied to obedience and obedience is tied to discipline.
I have an article on ”Notes on Moving in God's Power”.

God has given us power love and discipline why are they not evident?

God has given us these things the same way He has given us peace. John 16:33 It is in Him we have peace not in the world. We need to exercise our spirit to have peace.

Power love and discipline come as we use them. The Spirit moving is to be used not just be aware of Him.

V8 Therefore Because God has given us the Spirit of power love and discipline to use.
To use to kindle the gift of God within.

Do not be ashamed of the testimony of the Lord or of me His prisoner.
How do I counteract being ashamed?
Put your treasure there
pray and fast There is a contrast between being ashamed and suffering.
Suffering purifies.

According to the power of God.
Don't accept any kind of suffering, but according to what God has called you to.
What we are called to do we work along with suffering. Suffering that is not our work should be prayed against believe in God for healing/deliverance.
Apply ourselves to what God has called us to do.
The work to accomplish God's goal can bring suffering. If its not God's goal for you don't get bogged down in it.

V9 We are saved with a holy calling our calling by God is for the purposes of God.

This is not to say we should not pitch in and help where needed. But to do this your whole life with no direction form God is not right.

If leaders only use people for their purpose and don't facilitate or encourage people to follow God's leading to serve they have lost their purpose as a leader.

Christian leaders are to be servants not bosses.

Not according to our works but according to His own purpose and grace.

We are given the desires of our heart as we delight ourself in the Lord. God gives us His purposes.

One thing to learn is to distinguish between what we want apart from God's will. God accomplishes all things after the counsel (Amp. In agreement with) of His will.

Which He granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity.
Before the world began we had it. We had it before we were born. Our personal calling was granted to us before so we have it now!

I act on what I have power to do because that is where the open door is.

V10 But now has been revealed by the appearing of Jesus
Our gifting and calling are made clear to us as we come close to Jesus. As we pray to Jesus we are aware of what we should be doing. By renewing our minds in the word gives us a better understanding of what we should be doing.

The gospel abolished death. It brought light and life.
Death has no activity. Life happens with Jesus. We are given ability to do things with new life. Before when we were spiritually dead we could not see but when the gospel brought light we now see in a new dimension.

V11 For which I was appointed a preacher apostle teacher
God chose Paul for this work
Preacher – herald
Apostle – Special messenger.

V12 For this reason
Paul is a preacher apostle teacher of the gospel. And this is his calling according to God's purpose.

I suffer these things
2 Tim 1:8 suffer according to the power of God
2 Tim 2:3-9 Suffer as a good soldier of Jesus
Suffered hardship and imprisonment like a criminal
2 Tim 4:5 endure hardship
2 Tim 3:12 those who live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted
Phil 1:21 For me to live is Christ and to die is gain
Phil 3:8 count all lost and suffer the loss of all to gain Christ

But I am not ashamed
regret is the key thought. It is not in vain what Paul has been doing. He does not wish to have done something else. Why?
For I know whom I have believed.

V13 Retain the standard of sound words.
2 Tim 3:14 continue in the things you have learned
Jer 6:16 Ask for the ancient paths
Isa 8:20 If they do not speak according to this word it is because they have no dawn.
Jer 18:15 Forgotten God, gone after other gods stumbled from the way from ancient paths
Matt 7:14 gate is small and way narrow that leads to life.

Which you have heard from me
in the faith and love in Christ Jesus
teaching and hearing with faith and love
One is not effective without the other.
Paul talks about love where James talks about works. John in 1 John talks about the works of love.

We don't have faith if we don't do something (works of live) for others.

V14 Holy Spirit dwelling within us.
Receive Holy Spirit at salvation Eph 1:13
Baptism of Holy Spirit different event usually at a different time Acts 1:8
Rev 1:10; Rev 4:2
I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day. Need to have many refillings. In fact we should look to be filled constantly.
Matt 22:43 David in the Spirit speaks
Elisha gains the spirit by worshipful music.

”The treasure which has been entrusted to you.”
What is the treasure:
Hidden treasure kingdom of heaven Matt 13:44
Col 2:3 In Jesus are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge eternal life is the treasure. Though we have it eternally. Our access to it can be quenched by foolish thoughts and actions. Isa 33:6 Jesus gives us all.

-entrusted
to put in charge of another for care
God's treasure has been given to us to care for it and use it for God's glory.

V15 all in Asia turned away from me.

-What a devastating event.
How could Paul continue?
Ephesus was a main work.

V16-18
shows a positive way to pray for those who have hurt you. And keep your heart ready to serve the Lord.

Lord grant mercy.
