First Peter 1:1-12 Salvation has come.

1-2
  • Peter is writing to those who are scattered as aliens. He is
    writing to those chosen according to the Father's foreknowledge.
  • Why?
  • that they may obey Jesus
  • be sprinkled with His blood
  • be blessed with grace and peace

  • 3-5
  • The Father gives us:
  • a living hope through Christ's resurrection
  • an inheritance in heaven
  • protection by the power of God through faith for salvation
    at the end.

  • 6-9
  • These promises cause you to rejoice even if you have trials. Why are trials necessary?
    to prove your faith
  • that your faith may result in praise, glory and honor at Christ's revelation
  • This new life causes you to greatly rejoice with joy
  • inexpressible and full of glory.
  • the outcome of our faith which has been tried is the salvation of our souls.

  • 10-11
  • The prophets of old searched about this salvation. They wanted to know the time that the Christ would come.

  • Summery - Peter is introducing a new life that salvation brings and shows how our hopes and struggles work together for good.

    Application - Look to the promises that God has given us and be assured that He can be trusted throughout life.

    1 Peter 1:13-25 Be holy in your behavior.

  • Keep sober in Spirit.
  • Fix your hope completely on the grace form Christ's revelation.

  • Don't be conformed to your former lusts,
  • but be holy in your behavior.

  • Give our Father respect, knowing that we were not redeemed cheaply, but with the blood of Jesus, so work according to God's purposes.

  • This plan of our redemption was foreknown and our faith and hope are in God.

  • Obedience to God's word purifies our souls, for we have been born again to manifest a new kind of love, lived for others.

  • If we are saved this will help us grow.

  • We are built up in Jesus
  • Those who reject Him are doomed.

  • A royal priesthood
  • A holy nation
  • God's own possession

  • Why are we this?
  • To proclaim His excellences. How have we changed?
  • He called us from darkness into light.
  • Changed from having a lack of identity to being God's own people.
  • From not having received mercy to receiving mercy.

  • 11-12
  • We are not of this world, so don't be involved with its corruption.
  • Keep your behavior excellent, so that you will be proved excellent and innocent at the day of judgment.

  • Summary - Because we are not of the world we should put away the things of the world and live excellent before them. Grow in Christ so that we can proclaim God's excellences and His light.

    1 Peter 2:13-25 Obey those over you.

  • Submit yourself to every human institution.
  • So that by doing right your may silence the ignorance of foolish men.

  • Use your freedom for service, not for evil.

  • Servants submit to your masters
  • to the good and gentle
  • also to the unreasonable
  • Obedience to unreasonable masters brings God's favor.

  • Summary - Submit to rulers both good and unreasonable. Christ submitted even unto death for us. We are called to follow His steps.

    1 Peter 3:1-12 Marital harmony

  • Wives, obey your husbands, as you have been asked to obey other authority.
  • Why? So if they are disobedient you may win them over by your behavior.

  • How can wives win their husbands?
  • be chaste
  • by purity
  • be respectful
  • with a gentle and quiet spirit
  • external adornment will not be effective
  • follow the example of Sarah in being submissive and respectful

  • How to treat your wife.
  • live with her in an understanding way
  • live with her as a weaker vessel
  • honor her as a fellow heir
  • this frees up your prayers.

  • 8-9 Summary of attitude
    - Be harmonious, sympathetic, act brotherly, be kind-hearted, give a blessing instead of revenge. We were called for this purpose that we might receive a blessing.

  • Do you want to love life and see good days?
  • Don't speak evil or deceit
  • do good
  • seek and pursue peace
  • God sees and hears the righteous, but is against those who do evil.

  • Summary - Wives obey your husbands with respect, you will win your disobedient husbands over by, your good behavior and not your looks. If you do it in faith without fear. Husbands treat your wives with understanding, care for and honor her. This frees up your prayers. Care about others, do good for evil, then God will see and hear you.

    1 Peter 3:13-22 Sanctify Christ as Lord of your heart.

  • The danger of doing good:
  • Who would harm you for doing good?
  • if you do suffer, you are blessed
  • Don't fear or be troubled.

  • 15-16
  • Instead of fearing or being troubled, sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts.
  • How? (by making your purpose to obey Christ)
  • by being ready to share the gospel
  • keeping a good conscience
  • It is better to suffer for good than for bad.

  • 18
  • Christ died for our sins.
  • He was made alive in the spirit.

  • 19-20
  • Christ made a proclamation to those who were disobedient in Noah's day.

  • Christ saves us.
  • He is now ruling at the right hand of God.

  • Summary - Do good, , sanctify your heart to Christ so that you can bear the weight of works and no± fear. Christ has paved the way for us.

    1 Peter 4:1-11 Serve even through suffering.

  • Therefore = Christ suffered to save sinners Do the same thing. Why?
  • if you suffer in order to save sinners you will overcome sin. (Romans 8:2,5,6)

  • The time is past to live like the world, but they will give an account of their deeds.

  • 7-11
  • The end is at hand.
  • So: pray,
  • be hospitable,
  • use your gift,
  • speak God's words,
  • serve with God's strength.

  • Summary - Choose to serve even if you have to suffer. Be involved in your ministry.

    1 Peter 4:12-19 Share Christ's sufferings.

  • fiery ordeal comes on you to test you the more you suffer for Christ, the more you should rejoice.
    Why?
  • So that you may rejoice at the revelation of His glory.
  • You are blessed because His glory rests on you.
  • Don't suffer as a criminal.
  • Glorify God because you suffer as a Christian.

  • 17-19
  • Judgment will come to all, as you suffer according to God's will, entrust your soul to the faithful creator to do what is right.

  • Summary - Suffering comes to test you, His glory rests on you, rejoice and glorify God. Suffer according to God's will, entrust your soul to the creator.

    You will receive the unfading crown of glory.

  • Younger men:
  • be subject to your elders
  • be humble, humble yourself and God will exult you
  • Cast your anxiety on God for He cares for you.

  • Be sober.
  • Be alert.
  • Resist Satan, being firm in your faith. knowing others are suffering also.

  • 10-11
  • Perfection,
  • confirmation,
  • strengthening and
  • being established
  • come after suffering. God has the dominion.

  • Stand firm in God's true grace.
  • Greet one another with love and peace.
