"But if we walk in the Light as he Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin." 1 John 1:7 OUTLINE OF FIRST JOHN 1 John 1:1-10 Eternal Life 1-4 John is giving us an eyewitness account of eternal life. John is writing this for our ability to have fellowship with the apostles. 5-7 The summary of 1 John is that God is light. To have fellowship with God and others we must walk in the light. 7-10 The remedy for sin is that the blood cleanses us as we walk in the light. We are forgiven and cleansed as we confess our sins. Read God' s Word to know Him and to live according to what it says. We can't say we have no sin. We should confess our sins and walk in the light, I should confess my sins daily and see what I should be doing to live in the Spirit (eternal life) instead of in the natural. 1 John 2:1-17 Obedience expresses love 2:1-2 Advocate - intercessor, counselor, comforter. Propitiation (Strongs 2434) - atonement expiator. If we blow it we can go to Jesus 3-6 The one who keeps God's word knows God. We should walk as Jesus walked. If we don't keep the Word we don't love God. 7-11 If you love your brother you walk in the light. If you don't love your brother, you will stumble in the darkness. 12-14 Little children, in the Lord, know that their sin is forgiven and they know the Father. Young men have overcome the evil one, they are strong and the Word of God abides in them. The Fathers of the Church know Jesus. 15-17 You either love God or the fleeting things of the world. Doing God's will shows that you have eternal life. If we sin, Jesus is our advocate. If we love God we will do His will. Walk as Jesus walked and love your brother. Do not consider the fleeting things of the world as being important. I should prioritize my life so that the things for God are always accomplished. 1 John 2:18-3:3 Abide in Jesus 18-19 The spirit of the world has no fellowship with the the body of Christ. 20-23 Holy Spirit anointing allows us the know the truth, anti-christ denies Jesus is the Christ. 24-28 Let the Word abide in you to live in the eternal life in union with God. Holy Spirit anointing will show you right from wrong. Abiding gives us confidence at His appearing. 29-3:3 To practice righteousness comes from a new birth in Christ. Purity comes from expecting Christ to come and change us. As we live for Christ and not what the world has to offer, the anointing of the Word will show us right from wrong. This will allow us to live as new creatures in confidence at His appearing. Trust God's anointed Word. Trust God's leading in service. Look for Christ's coming. God's love leads us to live a righteous life in expectation of Christ's return. 1 John 3:4-3:18 Love Through Jesus 4-5 Jesus is the answer for sin. 6-10 Our life reflects who dominates our spirit. 11-12 Love one another. 13-15 Love shows eternal life. 16-18 How do we love? By giving of ourselves to others. Allow the anointing of the Word to lead you in how to love others. Jesus is the answer for our sin. He frees us to love one another. I should continue to confess my sin daily, looking for Him and allowing the anointing of His Word to show me how to love others. 1 John 3:19-4:6 Confidence in Jesus 19-21 If our heart does not condemn us, we know we are of the truth. If our heart does condemn us, God is greater than our heart. 22-24 Commandment-Believe in Jesus, love others. The reward to this is answered prayer. 4:1-3 Test the spirits 4:4 We overcome because Jesus is within us. 4:5-6 Test the spirits. Those who are from God listen to us. (The Bible and the elders of the Church). Jesus frees us from our sin and assures our heart before Him that we are of the truth. We have assurance that we are from God and as we obey, God answers our prayers. We overcome because Jesus is within us. Those from God confess that Jesus came in the flesh and listen to the Bible. Live in confidence in obedience expecting answers to prayer. Knowing those who are from God accept the truth. 1 John 4:7-21 God is Love 7-11 Love others because: Love is from God. Jesus lived in the world that we might live through Him. God loves us so we ought to love one another. 12-16 The proof of abiding is: If we love others God abides in us. We know that we abide in God because of the Holy Spirit. Confessing Jesus in faith allows us to abide in God. We abide in love. 17-18 Confidence with God As Jesus is so also are we in this world. Perfect love casts out fear. 19-21 Loving God births love to others. Our obedience expressed in love to others. Jesus will empower us. We love because of God. Our proof of abiding is because of God. Our confidence is because of God. Hear from God and act, being confident that He will empower you to do it. God is love. As we know God we love others. We move into love by confessing; this allows us to abide in Him. 1 John 5:1-12 Love Overcomes 1-3 If we love the Father, then we will love Jesus also. Our love for God allows us to love His children also. Love wants to obey. 4-5 Faith that springs from a love for God overcomes the world. 6-8 The witness of Christ is by the Holy Spirit, by His water baptism and by His death. 9-12 To have Jesus is to have eternal life. Love of God births love for others, which births faith, which overcomes the world. The obedience of faith that believes in Jesus brings victory. 1 John 5:13-21 Assurance in our life with Christ 13 John writes to believers to give them assurance of salvation. 14-15 We have assurance of answered prayer if we pray in accordance to God's will. 18-19 God keeps the righteous. The world is under the power of the evil one. 20 God gives us understanding to know Him. 21 Guard yourselves from idols.
