Campaign Trip

4th April 2009

All met at the Rose and Crown Bury St Edmunds at 12.00. to start the trip. Tony and Liz as usual were excellent hosts offering us XX mild, IPA, Abbot and the seasonal guest Hare Raiser. There is always cask mild available here and in excellent condition; Tony and Liz were keen to participate in the national cask ale week from the 6th – 13th April with 10 pence off all cask ales to promote the sale of real ale and hopefully encourage people to buy real ale from the pub rather than the supermarkets. Visiting on Tuesday, Tony’s plan obviously came together for as well as the above; we also had Alepril Fool and the wondrous Abbot Reserve which was beer of the festival last year at the East Anglian Beer Festival.

From there we travelled to Market Weston Mill Inn. Where we sampled Old Chimneys Great Raft Bitter, Military Mild and Adnmam’s Bitter. Lunch was excellent.

Soon Billy moved us on to the White Horse at Thelnetham. On offer here was GK IPA, Adnam’s Bitter and Deukars IPA. We took advantage of the spring sunshine and sat outside and enjoyed the ale.

Shortly we carried on to Stanton Cock where we were offered GK IPA and St Edmunds. Enjoyed the banter with the locals and enjoyed the Grand National once again my bet was a miserable failure.

We moved on to the Dunn Cow at Bardwell, where a warm welcome and friendly customer’s greeted us. The choice of ales was GK IPA, Flanker’s Tackle and Hydes Jeckyll’s Gold.

Onwards to our last stop of the day at Pakenham Fox; a choice of three ales here; Woodforde’s Wherry, Cottage Southern Bitter and Earl Soham Sir Roger’s Porter. A lively debate about the painting of the Fox and her cubs by a local artist; with the landlady telling us that there are hidden things to be found within the painting.

Once again all too soon we were on our way back home after and excellent day out. Beer of the day was GK Mild and pub of the day the Rose and Crown Bury St Edmunds.

Thank you Billy for the excellent and safe drive. A great day was had by all.

Col.
