Westquarter

David E Leask

The Background

It has long been my intention to build a website on the History of Westquarter but I got caught up in my other two websites, www.freewebs.com/westquarterdave which is about the history of Maddiston and Rumford and www.freewebs.com/maddistonschool where I took all the information on Education in the Parish of Muiravonside and put it into a site of it's own.

My book on Westquarter was published in 1986 and has a brief first part about the history of the Estate of Westquarter and it's owners, but in the main it deals with the Model Village that most of us know today.

I intend to deal in the main part with the history of Westquarter Estate and it's owners, the Model Village can wait.

Earliest times

Before the reformation all the lands of Polmont belonged to the Barony of Abbotskerse this included the area known as Woods of Polmont which included the area called Redding of which Westquarter is a fourth part.

After the reformation the lands were granted to the Duke of Hamilton who takes one of his titles (Lord Polmont) from the area.

The first family to be mentioned in connection with Westquarter was Livingston(e).
