We had a really good game against Oxford Uni on Sunday morning coming out narrow winners by 115-102. Oxford had a strong team that included the British University National Champion but were just pipped to the post by a Wessex team that included Mario (just got off the overnight plane from Trinidad), James Bristow (first match since his awful knee injury), Harry (working night shifts) and Ed MMC ('guest' Wessex player who was over from Greece for 3 days). I am sure without the buttress and with singles on the agenda we are going to have our work cut out to beat them in the return match on their courts in January. It was really great to see James Bristow in particular back on court again.

West of England Championships - 2008.
Club members enjoyed some success at the Championships, played over the weekend 25/26 October. In the singles competition, Will Ellison took one game off Cavanagh (number 4 seed) before losing in the quarter finals. Harry Akerman also reached the singles quareter finals and then lost to John Minta (Number 3 seed). In the doubles, Mario Mohamed and Harry AkermanI lost to 'Lord' Wayne Enstone (winner of the National Singles about 23 times (for which he is in the Guinness Book of records)) and Kevin Henry. But Mario and Harry may have exhausted Wayne and Kevin as Will Ellison and Hal Mohamed gave them a good beating in the next round! Will and Hal then went on to beat the number 1 seeds in the semi finals before losing to the number 2 seeds in the final - so many congratulations to them both on a fantastic performance. All the finalists in the singles and doubles this weekend were under 30 which is bad news for those of us over 30, but good news for the future of fives!

National Club Knockout
Executioners vs Wessex 9th April 2009
Harry Akerman reports : - We had an excellent game at St Paul's last night in the first round of the National Club Knockout. Sadly the Executioners proved too strong for us, but going into the last round of doubles there were still only 10 points in it. The courts at St Pauls were as hot as ever, and playing doubles on Rugby Fives courts reminded us quite why we like Winchester Fives so much! Will Ellison was on fine form (now where did he learn his fives?!) showing no respect for his elders and teachers, nor for the fact that that I drove him up to London and back! It was really good to see James Bristow back on the fives court after his horrible knee injuries. He still hits the ball as crisply as anyone and we look forward to seeing more of him in the future.
