Barry Heard. Author

My name is Barry Heard. Author of several books including WELL DONE THOSE MEN.

However this message is not about me. I write on behalf of a group of Vietnam Veterans, all conscripts. We all served with 7RAR A. Coy 1st tour. They are:

Mike Cawley Harry Hayes Barry Heard David Howlett Bill Hutchison

The message - we are after some help.

Yes, we are trying to raise money for a really good cause.

David Howlett - our hero – who along with his partner Jeanette deserve a bloody medal.

Why?

David and his partner are working voluntarily at a hospital in Malawi, Africa for two years. What David and Jeanette have experienced so far at this hospital is a mixture of goodwill and being part of a bloody appalling disaster.

WHY?

 – sadly, patients, babies and the like are suffering and dying frequently - due to one simple reason – the lack of permanent electricity supply at the hospital. It simply goes off – sometimes for hours on end – because the central supply system does not have enough electrical power to cover the region.

David wanted to solve this problem. He contacted Bill Hutchison, Harry Hayes, Mike Cawley and myself along with many others to see if there were any answers. Big ask, but we kept putting out the word.

Then it happened – a fellow Vet by the name of Richard Croucher from Lakes Entrance Victoria got in touch with me. Would you believe – we had an offer of a generator capable of powering not only the hospital, but the entire local settlement. It was big – half a ton. And it was ours – for nothing!

The generator was in Albury. So the planning began. Harry had contacts in the area of transport. We looked at getting funds to support hidden costs. Within a month I had contacted the owner of the generator and we were up and running. We seriously believed we could do this on our own.

Then it happened – sh*t – the generator a diesel – 200 liters a day - at $5.00 a liter – no way could we afford to run it.

I felt like loser when I rang the owner and said ‘no thanks’ In fact it knocked us all back a bit as plans were falling into place – pickup and delivery details, installation…

Not one of us could see this coming.

So, we laid low for a while – a lot of work for…SFA

Then David came up with another idea solar energy – on the roof of the hospital. Now that made sense.

So away we go again.

We need to raise about $50,000 – that’s a lot of money.

Now this is where you come in

Some suggestions

Individually, you put a few dollars into the account we have set up - say between $5 and $50.

OR

Pass this message via email to three close contacts, ask them to do the same. (With only a couple of 1000 contacts we will raise enough)

Or

Go public.

Yes, approach your RSL, Rotary, and Lions, big corporation contacts you may have and ask them several things.. Would they like to run small raffle? One of the prizes would be a hard covered copy of WELL DONE THOSE MEN, signed by all the Vets involved. Possibly some local business might like to offer other prizes.

Say 200.to500 tickets at $2 to $5 each depending on the prizes - would be great

OR

 Run a big raffle $5 to $10. 500 to 1000 tickets.

The Prize a Leather bound (1 of only 10) that will ever be produced. The book will be signed by as many A Coy blokes we can muster- we have many signatures already. The book is beautifully bound and has a metal 7RAR badge implanted in the front cover. There is no exact figure on the value – a book dealer suggested $2000 to $5000

In addition the winner will also be invited to walk the Red carpet when The International release of the film WELL DONE THOSE MEN IS RELEASED – possibly the end of 2015or early 2016.

Or – be a privileged guest during the filming – the current sites are Wollongong and Coffs Harbour.

HOWEVER WE CANNOT HOLD TO THE FILM PART OF THE RAFFLE AS IT COULD COLLAPSE AT ANY STAGE. Currently it is 70% of the way along its journey which began in 2012

  OR

Have Barry as your guest speaker on a night at a club, function, business, organization, footy rooms RSL, whatever … where we could maybe have a luncheon, tea, then I give a talk. Say we charge $10 on top of the meal price as an entry fee. Then the mates attempt to flog as many books as possible. We make between $8 and $10 a book. Good money – hopefully several $1000 all up. One function we are running is looking at $3000 to $5000

Thanks for reading this, now it’s up to you
