'Tag' was launched on the 28th May at 2pm 2009 at the Shrine in Melbourne. Gerard Callinan, manager and announcer from ABC radio Gippsland was the host. Then it was off to Albion Hotel, Swifts Creek. The following night it was the Golden Age hotel at Omeo. Both events were booked out, sold out of books and we had a great time. Both towns mentioned are located in far East Gippsland, better known as the high country. It's where I grew up.
MEDIA RELEASE 2008
The author of this book, The View from Connor's Hill, is a Vietnam Veteran who turned to writing as therapy for post traumatic stress disorder.
We should all be glad that he did, for he is a born story-teller and a faithful observer of the big and little things that give an Australian community its purpose and zest. The community Barry Heard writes about here is that part of the High Country around Omeo and Swifts Creek, an area where he grew up as a farm worker and wandered at large in the Gippsland bush, often alone, discovering the wonder and beauty of nature. One is reminded of Huckleberry Finn - or perhaps Ginger Meggs. Both were individualists who could take care of themselves. Barry Heard's first chapter on his dog is an outstanding piece of writing. Later, he played country football, the descriptions of which are vivid. It is possible that the High Country communities have never been so lovingly portrayed as they are here. As a portrait of this part of Australian life, the book
is a valuable memoir of its time.
