Hot Air Balloon: Legacy II

Pilot: Kathy Iwert
Location: Aiken, SC

Pilot Information and History

Kathy wanted to take a hot air balloon ride since she was a little girl and finally did on March 31, 1997. After that first ride she knew she wanted to be a pilot and have her own balloon. Within just a few months she had her first lesson (June 7, 1997). During that same month she bought her first balloon, Legacy I, from her instructor, David Fields. After only 1 year of lessons, she took her first solo flight on March 15, 1998. In June of 2000 she had to replace the envelope and Legacy II (pictured above) was born with the help of her friends and a few beers. On August 21, 1999, 2 long years after her first ride, she became an official Private Pilot and received her Private Pilot's License. That evening she celebrated with her husband, who is also her crew chief, Jon and some friends and ended up having a cooler of ice dumped over her head (pictured below). Her first event was Boshears. She piloted in the 2000 Kodak Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. She went again in 2001. In 2002 she was in Pembrook and Freedom Weekend Aloft. So far this year she has been in BoShears and Freedom Weekend Aloft and plans to attend the Albuquerque International Festival in the Fall. Check back often to find out where she'll be next and go meet her in person.

THE BALLOONIST'S PRAYER

The winds have welcomed you with softness
The sun has blessed you with his warm hands.
You have flown so high and so well
that God joined you in laughter
and set you gently back into
the loving arms of Mother Earth.

CREW PRAYER

The winds have welcomed you with fastness
The sun has cursed you with it's bright glare
You have flown so far and so fast
Your crew will never find you
And they have wrecked your truck
and drank your beer!!
