Controversy Is My Brain Candy
***DISCLAIMER: Each of these sites embody something which I, for one reason or another, find worthwhile. They are on this site, and not on my main site, because they express ideas potentially offensive to others. I have described each site as best I could so that people interested in the site may find it, but that those who would be offended can avoid it. If you ARE offended by the content on any of the pages, you are (of course) free to let me know, but don't expect me to delete the link. You have now been warned. Happy surfing.***

SOCIETY
Catullus's Poetry - Lots of scandalous love/lust poetry to be read here. Enjoy!

Third Wave Foundation - An organization dedicated to the continued advancement of women's equality. Also fights prejudice based on age, race, sexual orientation, economic status, and level of education.

Women and Social Movements in the Unites States, 1775 - 2000 - Contains an growing number of primary documents relating to women's involvement in social activism.

ACLU: Lesbian and Gay Rights - The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) supports the advancement of homosexuals' and bisexuals' political rights. They also post articles concerning current challenges to gay and lesbian rights.

GLBT Web-Based Education - Resource for all you ever wanted to know (and more) about gays, lesbians and bisexuals.

Bust Magazine - Stong, strong, liberal feminist online magazine. Sort of a female "rah! rah! rah!" magazine, but with a brain. No male-bashing whatsoever, though. I wouldn't have linked it here if it did.

NOW: National Organization for Women - Politically active feminist organization. Brava!!

ModestNeeds - Not really controversial, but a worthwhile link. It's a donation service with the goal to "help individuals who've encountered personal catastrophes through no fault of their own and who really do need some tangible, immediate financial help in order to get back on their feet or with necessary expenses that they could never hope to meet without some help."

POLITICS
Students for an Orwellian Society - One of the best satire sites around, and rather informative too. Great for learning more about the current state of affairs in our country.

Not In Our Name - A pacifist site with a pledge and a petition against the war in Iraq.

This Modern World - Poignant political cartoonage.

U.S. Diplomat's Letter of Resignation - The following is the text of John Brady Kiesling's letter of resignation to Secretary of State Colin L. Powell. An anti-war act which makes me very proud of him.

Pariot Act II - This sort of documentation represents my greatest grievance with the Bush administration. They are trying to take away our Consitutional rights. This legislation MUST NOT PASS.

Guerrilla News Network - The site itself isn't controversial, but many of the stories are. Feel free to browse for stories that aren't necessarily getting much press elsewhere.

PHILOSOPHY/RELIGION
The Gospel of Thomas - One of the apocraphal writings that didn't make it into the canon of the Bible. An excellent comparative look at Jesus. A great exercise: Try to decide what made this work apocraphal, why it couldn't have been included. Pick out which passages you think were contrary to the beliefs of early Christian leadership.

GnosticChristianity.com - A rather fascinting philsophy which I have not yet researched. Should be interesting to learn about.

Hindu Universe - Lots of resources for understanding the Hindu religion, including translations of various holy texts.

Unitarian Universalism - A relatively new religion without a set dogma or primary holy scripture. They preach a spirit of toleration, community responsibility, and the exploration for personal philosophical truth.

World Religions Tutorial: Buddhism - A very informative website describing the history and basic tenants of several divisions in Buddhism.

Buddhist Scripture - This site has links to a variety of Buddhist texts on-line, including multiple translations of some texts.

Resource on Islam for Students and Teachers - Laymen term explanations for the history and the values of the Muslim people, as described by various websites posted according to subject. Learn the truth about the beliefs and practices of the Islam (translated "Submission" in English), a peace-loving religion with strong historical ties to Judaism and Christianity.

Koran (Qur'an) On-Line - Electronic text of the Koran. Is both searchable and readable by chapter.

Saviors of God - Extremely cool philosophical work. I don't agree with a lot of what is said, but it makes you think. Don't read this unless you want your mind stretched and your religious/philosophical boxes broken.

Nikos Kazantzakis - A website with links pertaining to Kazantzakis's life or his works. His written pieces include "Saviors of God" and The Last Temptation of Christ.

FUNNY STUFF
SomethingPositive - A great web comic. Very sarcastic and risque. Won't be to everyone's taste, but it fits the liberal college student's humor very well.

T-Shirt Hell - Often funny, but even more often offensive. Enter this shop at your own risk.

Black People Love Us! - A rather well done satire site that hightlights the very stupid attitudes some people have concerning minorities, specifically black people. I would place it under the SOCIETY heading, but it's just too damn funny.
