goldmember review by emily...

Austin Powers in Goldmember, directed by: director
2002. With: Mike Myers, Beyoncé Knowles, Seth Green, Mindy Sterling

Story: Obviously, nobody sees this movie expecting a plot-driven drama. Austin (Myers) has to save his father (Michael Caine) from the evil Goldmember, as well as Dr. Evil (both played by Myers). Time traveling takes him to the ’70s to find Goldmember, and he ends up taking undercover policewoman/party girl Foxy Cleopatra (Knowles) back to 2002 to help him. They find lots of wacky adventures along the way, each time pausing for an extended potty joke. The movie kept falling into ruts with crazy situations and consequences that were avoided by somebody peeing a lot. 7/15.

Characters: Most of the characters fall into their established rhythm quickly and easily. Some characters rely too heavily on gross-out humor to get laughs (Goldmember eats his own peeling skin, Fat Bastard returns as a sumo wrestler with digestive problems). Lots of cameos... most of them announced but there were some less noticeable ones (look for Katie Couric in prison)... my favorite was a certain Academy Award-winning actor playing the movie version of Dr. Evil... Unfortunately, the party I went with wanted to leave as soon as the credits started rolling, so I might have missed some of them. Michael Caine as Austin’s playboy father was probably the best character. 12/15.

Dialogue: For me, the non-bodily function jokes were surprisingly funny. I had come to the movie expecting it to be a painful experience. Although my laughs were somewhat spaced and short, the movie is targeted for a wide range of humors. Michael Caine’s Cockney is well worth at least seeing the movie, too: “It’s not the size that ma’ers, mate, it’s ’ow yo use et.” 11/15.

Visual: The London mod feel is there, but it gets lost somewhere in the movie, perhaps around the time Dr. Evil’s sub replicate releases giant air bubbles from the... er... stern. Fat Bastard, Goldmember, and all the other parts that made me cringe. (I was in “downtown Tokyo” at the WB Studios lot... look for the giant Britney Spears poster... of course it looked a little different when I was there). 11/15.

Music: I don’t remember any except for Britney Spears (oops, did I give away a plot twist), but if it really is Quincy Jones then I can’t really be too harsh. 12/15.

Originality: Most of the repeated jokes from the first two movies are called - once by a guest family cameo. Pretty unique otherwise, though. 13/15

Recommendation: Not for everyone, and I’d recommend it sparingly as it might be reflected poorly upon me. 5/10.

Extras (PLUS): Danny DeVito. +1

Extras (MINUS): Nothing I haven’t already deducted in the rest of the review.

TOTAL: 72
