Special Interest in Scientific and Medical Topics

This happens to be my hompage, where if you can read examples of my published material as well works in progress. You can also find off-site links to things that I've written on various topics. Please feel free to look around, as I can assure you that I am a better writer than a web page designer!

The Brain Injury Survey

As a survivor of a brain injury, I've developed an interest in both the physical processes following such injuries as well as the individual's experiences during recovery.

I am currently researching a book project that will, hopefully, give the reader a better understanding of the physiology of brain injury and the unique needs of the survivor and their families. I have just completed an extensive search of the medical and scientific literature in order to present a "state of the art" review of our current understanding of brain pathology as it relates to injury as well as conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and genetically-induced conditions. The project will also review current treatment options and treatments that are under development.

In order to "put a human face" on this data I am asking that brain injury survivors (and their families) contact me with their individual stories. You can reach the survey page by following the above link. That page will have a survey form that can filled out offline and then returned when completed.

The Sorcerer's Requiem : A Christmas Story

The Sorcerer's Requiem is a work in progress and, as of this writing, is entering the finished manuscript stage. It's something of a love story, an allegory of the Buddha, and a mystery all rolled into one. The chapter presented here, which I've named "A Christmas Tale," is set in the (semi-fictitious) town of Palmdale, Alaska and tells the story of a very special, once in a lifetime Christmas. I hope you enjoy it!

Neuralpathways

Partly as a result of the actions taken by the editors at Associated Content.com (see below) I've started a blog where I'll be writing about three things that are very important to me: science, medicine, and brain injury. My plans are for it to be a combination of news, opinion, and some personal stories from my fellow brain injury survivors and their families. Since there aren't too many people that will admit to being a brain injury survivor (much less write about it from a personal perspective), I hope that it will become a forum for those with similar conditions.

Case Studies in Stupidity

I couldn't help myself! There is so much stupidity in the world that I was forced to start another blog devoted to the recognition and study of stupidity in its many and varied forms. Even if you totally disregard the antics of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, there is so much stupidity in the daily news that it defies the ability of the English language to adequately describe it!

Readers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but the stupidity of others!

My Content Pages at Associated Content.com

Most of my humor, as well as some "serious stuff," is published at Associated Content.com. If you enjoy humor with a dash of satire and a healthy round of cynicism, this is the site for you.

UPDATE! As of August 31, 2007 I won't be publishing new material at Associated Content.com. The editors there have reduced payments for new material to the point that, for all practical purposes, I would be writing for less than a penny per word. I happen to think that my material is worth more.

World Mysteries.com

One of the things that really ticks me off is when someone tries to twist science around to make it seem to support some off-the-wall "anti-gravity" idea or, even worse, when someone tries to explain science in terms of "religion" or "spirituality." World Mysteries.com is where I rant and rave against such "voodoo," pseudoscience, and total nonsense.

A Bullet, A Grave, A Memory

This is a short story that's hosted by Don Swaim's Ambrose Bierce Site. The story is based on a true, but almost unbelievable, event: the night that Billy the Kid and Jesse James shared a Sunday dinner near Las Vegas, NM. I've always been a fan of Ambrose Bierce and I am honored that Don thought enough of my story to feature it on his web site.
