"A horse gallops with his lung, preserveres with his heart, and wins with his character."
Here is the line-up of the Wavin' K Performance Horses in our breeding program. All of these mares and stallions are proven inside and outside of the arena. They each have different attributes that they pass along to their colts, but all have one thing in common: great minds, great athleticism, and great looks. We strive to breed horses that are of sound mind and body...and will stay sound through many years of performance.
Our horses are not only our trusted working partners, they are our beloved friends.
1994 Brown Jockey Club Stallion
HAIL TO REASON
Wavin' K Performance Horses is proud to introduce a very important stallion to Wyoming. GW's Band is a stakes placed Black-type winner from down south, he has won $101,986 on the track with the record of 29-4-3-6, retiring very sound. He is an own son of Dixieland Band (Northern Dancer x Mississippi Mud) and Meadow Mist (Irish River x Champagne Cocktail).
GW was bred by the famous Keswick Stables of VA. Keswick Stables are a VA Racing Hall of Fame Stable that has bred 48 stakes winners including the millionaires Eishin Guymon, Simply Majestic, Alwuhush and Sabin as well as the Grade/ Group 1 winners Arctic Tern, Chain Bracelet, Eclipse Award winner Johnny D., Ashayer and Husband. Virginia-bred champions include Crown Silver, C’est L’Amour, Semoran (twice), and three category 2002 champion Bop.
In addition, Keswick has frequently won Virginia's Howell E. Jackson Broodmare Award. Beaming Bride, the dam of Simply Majestic, Alwuhush, Husband and Pia Bride, leads the way with two honors. Highland Fling, L’Amour Toujours and Meadow Mist have also won the award. They are a fixture at the Saratoga yearling sale, Keswick set a world record for a filly in 1962 when Golden Gorse (by Swaps, out of Auld Alliance) brought an $82,000 final bid. In 1982, Keswick sold Group 3 stakes winner Kanz, a daughter of The Minstrel, out of Treasure Chest for $2.1 million and in 1984 a colt by Roberto, out of Gurkhas Band for $4 million.
In addition, Keswick, in partnership with Daniel G. Van Clief Sr.'s Nydrie Stud, bred Northern Dancer's dam Natalma. Knight also purchased a world record weanling for the price of $22,000 in 1961 and resold the colt for a tidy profit the following year at Saratoga. The weanling: Raise A Native.
...now that you understand where GW came from, I'll tell you some about his momma, Meadow Mist (Irish River x Champagne Cocktail) owned by Keswick Stables of Virginia, winner of Virginia Thoroughbred Association’s Howell E. Jackson Broodmare award. She is the dam of 4 black-type winners including: EISHIN GUYMON (c by Seattle Dancer) champion in Japan, winner which over $4.2 million.
GWs sire, Dixieland Band, has his own impressive story to tell. His record is 24-8-3-4, $441,320 - he was one of the original three stallions at Lanes End Farm. He was bred by Bayard Sharp, a prominent and highly respected Delaware horseman and president of The Blood-Horse Inc. Out of the Sharp-owned multiple stakes winning mare, Mississippi Mud, he was a son of the 20th century's most influential sire, Northern Dancer.
Racing under the colors of Mrs. Sharp, Dixieland Band won the 1983 Pennsylvania Derby at age three and at age four, the Massachusetts Handicap. He was retired after the 1984 racing season to stand at his owner's stud farm in Middletown, Delaware.
A very successful stallion, as of early 2008 Dixieland Band has sired 114 stakes race winners and 43 Graded stakes race winners of which five have each earned more than $1 million. In addition, Dixieland Band is the damsire of two Kentucky Derby winners, Monarchos winning in 2001 and Street Sense in 2007. He is also the damsire of the 2007 Australian Champion Stayer, Delta Blues.
Owner Bayard Sharp's daughter Sarah is married to prominent Kentucky horseman, William S. Farish III. Mr. Sharp died in 2002 and Dixieland Band stood at the Farish family's Lane's End Farm in Versailles, KY. Among his progeny were Bowman's Band, Citidancer, Dixie Brass, and Dixie Union. At the end of the 2008 breeding season, Dixieland Band was pensioned from stud duties. Dixieland Band was euthanized due to old age on April 7, 2010 at 30 years old.
Wavin' K speedhorse program is on the rise. Quality running bred horses have many virtues that make them insurpassable in the arena. They have explosive speed and uncanny athletic ability, but one very important thing separate the good ones from the greats: their mind. We strive to produce a horse this sound of mind and body, and will sustain many years of work and dedication to their rider.
We use bloodlines which preserve the mind and soundness of our running bred horses, and that have speed and athleticism second to none. We try to match the proven speed and performance on the track of many great race horses and mold that to meet our very high expectations inside the arena.
The following are speed bred Wavin' K mares, all of these mares are proven on the track, in the arena, or as producers. If you are looking for beauty, speed, endurance, and durability, you've found it.
"A racehorse that consistently runs just a second faster than another horse is worth millions of dollars more...be willing to give that extra effort that separates the winner from the one in second place." - H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
Cruz is a beauty from the Broken Bones Cattle Co in Lander. She is in barrel racing training currently and is showing a huge ammount of athleticism and smarts. Proven bloodlines of race and barrel racing champions.
Missy is a BUCKSKIN daughter of Sunshine Jet out of a Rutland Ranch bred mare. She ran a SI 72. Her pedigree is approximately 31% Easy Jet. She had an outstanding light sorrel (red dun) stud colt sired by VVR Shock N Awe this year.
"Josie" is a 1D barrel horse with many $$ won barrel racing, she was also raced lightly as a filly. She is a very beautiful mare, well balanced and super fast. Josie is a Race ROM producer, her only raced foal earned her race ROM. She had a beautiful filly for us in '11 and was left open to compete on.
"Porsche" is a beautiful OWN DAUGHTER of ESPECIAL EFFECTS, the only FULL brother of SPECIAL EFFORT, who was the only horse to win the Quarter Horse triple crown. Her granddam was a Canadian National Champion chariot horse. She foaled a beautiful bay filly this year sired by VVR Shock N Awe AND she has adopted Indi's orphaned filly too! What an outstanding momma!
"Patty" is a daughter of FORALLITSWORTH AAA, race ROM, grandson of JOHNNY BULL. She is very keen AQHA red roan mare who brings to the table a lot of color, athleticism, and foundation performance bloodlines. She is a proven producer of big, good looking, hard working horses that excel on the ranch and in the arena.
Patty is exposed to a SON of SHINING SPARK out of a NU CASH mare for 2014.
This beautiful mare is an own daughter of SACRED INDIAN, who needs no introduction. She is out of a mare with halter and performance points, her maternal granddam is a true all around horse. Indi foaled a beautiful bay filly sired by GW this year, however sadly she died unexpectedly when she was 4 months old. We have been supplementing her filly and another mare has adopted her!
Wavin' K and Top Hatt Equine hold their cow bred horses very dear to their heart. There is nothing comparable to the minds and athleticism of the cowpony, they tamed the wild west and continue to thrill and fufill their owners and riders today.
Here, we strive to produce a horse that has the cowsense and athletic ability to compete in the cutting pen, as well as the mind, bone, and substance of body to stay usable and excel in any other discipline you choose. We have a variety of bloodlines with many modern horses blended nicely with the roots of cowhorse.
"Cutting horse: cow pony with a master's degree." - Buster Welsh

Pheonix has outdone herself with her beautiful palomino filly sired by TC in 2011, a golden stud colt in 2012, and is bred to a SON of SHINING SPARK for 2014.

We, along with many performance horse people, have discovered that if you want the "ultimate performance horse" you need to think outside of the box, and bring together all the qualities that we need in order to out ride, out shine, and out last all the competition. How do you do this? It's simple, sort of, you combine speed and cow breeding to create an animal that can run and cow, can accelerate and stop, can turn and burn, and that will stay sound and sane.
Wavin' K has taken this philosophy to heart, and our speed bred and cow bred horses are intercrossed to bring out all these needed and desired qualities of the "ultimate performance horse."
"Around here, we don't saddle up to run second." - Millie Vessels
Below are some mares who didn't quite fit into either mainly speed or cow bred, they are performance bred.
"Vegas" is the knock out 4 year old palomino daughter of Pheonix, so you can see that tho bottom side of her papers is filled with greats. Her sire needs no introduction: FIREM JET, by leading barrel horse sire - FIRE WATER FLIT. She holds a bright future in the performance arena, she is big, beautiful, and very athletic with a wonderful mind.
"Scenic" is a big 99 APHA medicine hat paint mare. She is an outstanding barrel, pole, and rope horse and has proven herself time and again inside the rodeo arena. Now it is her time to prove herself in another way. We are looking forward to breeding her next year and getting some top of the line performance horse babies from her.
