HIGGINSHAW 8-14 WATERHEAD 'A'

David Hewitt grabbed a late try to hand Waterhead a 14-8 victory over Higginshaw in a thrilling Lancashire Cup first round tie at Oldham Edge. The winger scored five minutes from time, superbly converted by James Campbell off the touchline, to settle a compelling game in which neither side gave an inch. Waterhead scored first, an unconverted try out wide by John Thewlis handing the away side the advantage. Defences were on top in the early stages though, with significant scoring opportunities few and far between.
Higginshaw came back into the game and went close through Nick Lewis, Kris Richards and Scott Hewson — but it was Waterhead who grabbed the next score, through winger Scott Graham. A penalty from Higginshaw’s Nick Lewis reduced the arrears to 8-2 at half-time, before Lewis’s boot brought the score to within four just after the break. Higginshaw’s forwards then came to the fore and a try for powerful centre Steve Perry, off hooker Sam Abbott’s superb kick, equalised the scores.
More pressure from the home side followed, but Waterhead took the game on a break downfield with Lowther crashing over to conclude a great advert for amateur rugby league in Oldham.
