Questions and answers

Are Alpacas easy to work with?

Yes, alpacas aer very intelligent animals that respond to many training and handling techniques.  They will learn to halter and lead in just a few short sessions.  Even children can work with these gentle animals.

Is it OK to have just one alpaca?

In general I would say no.  Alpacas have a very strong herding instinct and need the company of other alpacas. They should have at least one other alpaca of the same gender or a gelding as a companion for them to be happy and thrive.

Do I need a lot of land to raise alpacas?

No. The area in which you live will determine what type of set up you have.  For arid climates animals are usually fed on 'dry lot', with little or no pasture feeding.  In this instance, the number would be around two to six per acre.  In milder, wetter climates with more fresh pasture, ten or more per acre might be more normal.

I live in the city.  Would it be possible to still own alpacas?

YES.  City folks can board (agist) their alpacas at nearby farms so that they can enjoy the benefits of ownership while still living in the city or suburb.

How much do alpacas cost?

The price of an alpaca will depend on its quality ( conformation and fleece ), bloodlines, positive traits that are proven to be heritable in its offspring, whether it is a male or female, age, breeding history, and other factors.  We recommend that you talk to several breeders  before making a  purchase decision.  Also, please be sure to  talk to your tax advisor about the effects of alpaca purchase on your specific tax situation.  For most breeders, the purchase of alpaca breeding stock offers many favorable tax advantages, as well as the potential for significant income generation.
