Cougar Deterrent
I got this question and thought I would post it here in case it is of interest to others.
QUESTION: was wondering if you knew of a Cougar deterrent?
ANSWER:
I don't have a product tested and proven against cougars. Cougar are
very rare in my test areas and I have no first hand experience. The
model 2014 uses a recorded cougar scream that was produced by a tom
cougar that was upset by a territorial intrusion. It has the potential
of deterring younger cougars that do not have established territory. It
would not likely help as a direct deterrent against a tom in his own
territory. I could not guarantee results. Cougars have large
territories due to food needs. The best deterrent I can recommend is to
not feed them and they will go elsewhere. My deterrents keep deer away
which is their primary food... so the cougar would move on looking
elsewhere for food. The deterrents also keep away other nocturnal
animals that are a food source. I have deterrent customers in active
cougar areas and know that a 2014 does not attract them. It "may" help
for the above reasons. The 2004 or 2301, synthesized hiss models
definitely do not help against any species of cat directly.
I
have not heard of any deterrent offered by others claiming to deter
cougar. If your searching finds one, I would love to know so I could
recommend to others like you to consider it. Cougar are an
understandable concern as being potentially dangerous to people,
especially children, as well as a livestock/pet predator.

Update:
A situation developed here at WCE in late 2005 involving a young cougar
that thought my pet cats were a tasty treat. The use of a 2014
deterrent caused an immediate change in diet. The scream is a
territorial warning and the young cougar knew better than to mix it up
with dad. I lost a couple really nice cats proving this but the
remaining ones proved the test and are doing fine. Cougar are...
or should I say were... rare around WCE. It is thought there are
about 4 - 7 now commonly within 10 miles.
