Origins of Walk as One (WAO)
Walk As One (WAO) originates from the U.S. It is a 1.5 mile walk that brings together the Omaha/Council Bluffs communities (United States) to take steps together against bias, bigotry and racism. It is also a fund raising activity for the NCCJ's Midlands regional office to continue offering programs that prepare individuals to become productive citizens and leaders in their increasingly diverse society.
The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), founded in 1927 as The National Conference for Christians and Jews, is a human relations organization dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry and racism in America. NCCJ promotes understanding and respect among all races, religions and cultures through advocacy, conflict resolution and education
The Walk As One Mauritius
WAO will be celebrated on the 22nd October annually and inspite of little maneouvre ACM decided to embark upon this activity.Mr. Chintaram established links with Ms Hebenstreit (NCCJ) and inspired himself to adapting the event in the Mauritian context and baptized it Walk As One Mauritius (WOM).WOM goes a step further and lays strong emphasis on political tolerance. We witness that in our society there is growing political intolerance. So over and above saying no to racism, WOM says that even if we dont share the same political ideologies, we are still brothers and sisters and we MUST always think and work with a common aim , that of the welfare of the community. The motto of ACM deemed appropriate for the event and thus the same is being used, that is, One Community, One Identity, and One Family
