Hi everyone and welcome to the Hands On Walker County website. My name is Amy Fikes and I am the Program Coordinator for Walker County. Working with Hands on Birmingham, a volunteer organization that makes it easy to make a difference, and the Walker Area Community Foundation, it is my goal to inform our community of different ways to volunteer. It has been said that, "If you give what you've always given, then you'll get what you've always gotten." So, join with us to create a better Walker County, by giving your time to help our community.
My job is two fold. First, by working with Hands on Birmingham, it is my goal to help volunteer groups in Walker County, promote their projects and find the volunteers they need to get their jobs done. By posting their project information on the Hands on Birmingham website, we can work together to "get the word out" to those in our community.
Second, in cooperation with the Community Foundation, we will build what is called a VOAD, or Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters. This is a group of non-profits, government agencies, and volunteer organizations who join together to create an efficent response plan, should a large scale disaster strike Walker County. By working together, we can create a plan to manage volunteers and donations, while utilizing volunteers talents and ablilites to meet the most pressing needs after a disaster.
We have also been working very closely with the Walker County EMA as well as the Walker County Red Cross chapter. We appreciate all they have done to help us get our VOAD started.
With this website, I hope to provide you with information regarding volunteer opportunities in Walker County. I will also be posting VOAD meeting dates, times, and locations; as well as, notes from those meetings.
