UPDATE!

Well my mini-DXpedition is over. I made 36 QSO's, including 9 on HF. Had to do all the logging by hand since my minirecorder makes QRM on the downlink :-( I've got every QSO down, anyways. I just wasn't so quick on the draw when coming back to people ;-)

QSO's from GN36MX

The spot in Port Kirwan I planned on operating from was really only accessible by a mile long snowy foot trail! Running out of time, I quickly found this cemetery that was somewhat high in elevation and worked 3 stations on AO-51.

QSO's from GN36MV

I went down to Renews to see if the spots I had spotted on the Mapquest overlay in Radio Mobile were viable for satellite contacts. I found that I couldn't get to them without hiking either. It seems whoever made the mapquest maps thinks the cart trails are roads. I've had this same problem around the bay before with the Garmin Mapsource maps. Past Renews and just before Cappahayden on the Irish Loop (NF Route 10) was this scenic overlook. The next three passes required a good horizon view to the east so I decided to set up here for awhile. I also made some HF contacts here.

QSO's from GN36ks

With about a 90 minute break before the next pass, I was off to find a spot where I could see the horizon to the west. I travelled south towards Cape Race, picked up a sub, bag of ketchup chips and a can of Mug root beer at the convenience store and found this nice high spot in the barrens near the Cape Race Loran C station. You can just barely make out the tower in the backround in the second picture which is facing west. No trees to mess with the signal and no hills in the way, plus about 160m above sea level. Works for me! Loran station didn't cause any QRM so that was good. The first picture is looking down the road to the north east, back towards town. Nothing around in these barrens; just a couple cabins and probably some caribou hiding somewhere. The ground is like mush. Even the gravel drive (the old highway) I parked on was mushy. I'm glad my car didn't sink in too much!
