Welcome to my list of free useful software for Windows Mobile. If this is a success then I will also make one for XP/Vista and also networking. My experience with free software is that I am a Network Specialist at a community college. My time allotment and lack of funding has made me spend a large amount of time trying out and reviewing programs for college use. Hopefully you will find my opinions useful.

Windows Mobile 5+

Magic Button – This program allows you to exit programs for real. Currently when you hit the x in the top left corner it does not close your program. It just kind of multitasks away from it. If you go to your memory icon in settings and check it you will see a bunch of programs still in the memory. A lot of these programs you probably intended to close, yet they did not close. Magic button fixes this problem by closing programs when you hit the x.

3d Nine Hole Golf – from Microsoft. I don’t know what happened to it. I cannot find it anywhere… but… here it is for you out of my archives.

Wififofum – Wifi Scanner

DOS

Bootdisk.com – every bootdisk thinkable.

Windows 98

Windows XP

CloneZilla Live CD – Freeware Cloning utility. Make backups or clone a drive from disk to disk with this bootable CD.

Process Explorer – From Microsoft (Formerly from SysInternals). This is a great alternative to Task Manager. It has a lot of great features that Task Manager is Missing. Will work on vista and xp.

OpenOffice – For those who do not want to purchase Office (like many students who are on a budget) this is a good alternative.

Windows Vista

FOG – Freeware Cloning utility that can mass clone even Vista. Multicasting Support.

Windows Server 2000+

WinistLe – This is on your windows server CD. Under valueadd>3rdparty. It is great for creating MSI packages. It will capture the state before application setup and after, then compare to make an MSI of the changes.

Networking

Spiceworks – oh boy! A free trouble tag and asset inventory software. I like this program. The only drawback is advertisement in the side panels and this program can be slow if you have a very large network.

Ethereal – Network protocol/packet analyzer

Wireshark - protocol/packet analyzer

Misc

TrendMicro – Antivirus www site with online scanner – free

Computer Associates Virus and Spyware scanner – free online scanner. It will not kill anything, but it sure does tell you where everything is infected. Save report, reboot in safe mode and use report to kill infections.

PandaSecurity – Online Scanner… Will kill virus… but only reports on spyware
