We breed and sell FB and percentage Boer meat goats. purebred Nubian Dairy goats (doelings, bucklings and wethers). We do have SHOW quality goats available from time to time. We are a small 14 acre farm located in the rugged hills of Appalachia in southern Ohio. We live an 'off-grid' lifestyle-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Off-the-grid   in a small cabin set back in the forest. We live without being 'tied in' to electricity. We use solar panels and 12volt batteries. Our fridge, dryer, stove, hot water heater are propane. We use some propane for heat too. We also use woodburners, a fireplace and kerosene heaters. A generator allows me to use the computer or watch television. We use lanterns and lamp oil, battery flashlights, windup light as well our generator for light. We have a spring for water which is 'seasonal' so we also will haul water in when needed. If you would like to read about the 'details' of this transition, you can read my journal at-

I have retired from 30 years of nursing. The majority of my nursing career focused on working with Spinal Cord and Brain injured patients, MRDD, dual dignosed. However, my work also included working in hospitals on med-surg, dialysis and CICU, Dr. offices and assisted living facilities. 

I have taken college courses for Journalism and enjoy writing.

 My life revolves around my dogs, the farm and our animals. I also enjoy gardening medicinal and culinary herbs. I am on this farm 24/7 and this helps me stay right on top of everyones' needs here. We also raise Rhode Island Reds, Buffs, Wyandottes, Black Stars and White Leghorns for meat and eggs. We have Magpie ducks and a small meat rabbitry. We grow a vegetable garden for our food and share with the animals, sometimes whether we want to or not!

OUR GOATS

Our goats are ADGA registered Nubians and ABGA registered (pending) FB SA Boers. We also have a Saanan wether for our buck's companionship. We have acquired our foundation Boer meat does and buck and will soon be breeding  and marketing. We do not 'show' our animals  However, we do breed and raise some of our goats for 'show quality' so that they meet conformation standards as well as carry on some of the best bloodlines anyone would want to start a herd with or add to an existing herd.  Even though our small herd does not leave the farm, we still test for CAE and CL and all goats tested negative. Our goats are healthy and abcess free.

It is a BIG goal of ours to be able to treat our goats (and other 'critters') using only herbs that are grown here. Our goats are free range. IOW, they browse the fields and woods all day long. Their stable is open for them to come and go as they please. They are provided fresh water twice daily and unlimited access to selenium/copper and salt minerals to prevent deficiencies. The does recieve grain if they are lactating or pregnant. Both bucks and does recieve some grain in the winter when there is little if any forage and unlimited weedy hay that has Alfalfa in it and obtained from nearby farmers who do not use fertilizers. When raised naturally without chemical intervention, goats (and actually ALL of God's creatures), develop better immunities. Goats will naturally consume the types of vegetation their bodies need.

At this time our little herd is just that. We only have four purebred Nubian Does, two FB and one percentage Boer does, one FB Full CODI/PCI buck en route and one purebred Nubian herdsire, our Saanan wether for buck companionship.We do not intend to keep a large herd here at Vine Hill. The numbers will be kept low, keeping or selling only the best picks and culling others for meat consumption. This way, the small herd will always recieve only the best we can offer as far as healthcare, supplemental feed, forage accessibility and individual attention. This is called "Quality over Quantity" 

We 'monitor' our goats daily for any signs of illness or weight loss and only intervene when necessary and intervention is rare here. We try the least invasive method required to help a goat heal and use an antibiotic ONLY when absolutely necessary. In my opinion their is 'overkill' with this food and that supplement, this vitamin and that commercially prepared grain. We support the move to 'getting back to nature' and our goat's weights, appetite, breeding/kidding and milking production speaks for itself!

 This breed has been around for over a century. They are sometimes referred to as 'Scotch collies' or Farm Collies. They herd, guard and hunt and have astounding instincts. This has been preserved by not breeding for 'show' dogs.  All of our pups have been placed in wonderful loving homes.  These dogs are known for being the 'all around farm dog' and do not require kenneling as they stay close to you.
