Our 2009 show program offers some new divisions, Snaffle Bit, Walk/Trot and Green Horse/Green Rider . We still have Junior A and B, Senior, novice and open divsions for riders, as well Games in the afternoon. We also offer halter classes for the younger horses, ( 2 and under, 3 to 4 year olds, 5 and over and open), and in hand trail class.

There will also be no Cross Entry in the Walk/Trot Division.
Example: You cannot cross enter from walk/trot to any other division.
  

 

  


RULES

 

GENERAL

  • No horses are allowed near the Concession or beyond the fence by the Announcer’s booth where the patterns etc. are posted.
  • Horses are to be loped only in main or trail arenas.
  • Inhumane treatment of animals will result in the exhibitor being asked to leave the show grounds.
  • All dogs must be leashed at all times.
  • Judge has the option to check any bit at any time.
  • Judge must use scribe for trail and reining classes.
  • All competitors must have current Horse Council of BC membership.
  • A rider touching the saddle with their hand in performance and trail classes will be placed lower than a rider that did not touch the saddle
  • Jr. A is 14-18 yrs. Jr. B is 13 and under. Ages as of January 1st  of the current year. Jr. rider is 18 yrs. & under
  • Jr. A & Jr. B competitors will be judged separately.
  • Novice Rider has not won 3 first place ribbons in that particular class.
  • Green Horse/Rider is in first or second year of showing at the lope.
  • Junior Horse - 5 & under - may be ridden two handed with snaffle or bosal. May be ridden one handed with a shank/curb bit.
  • Senior Horse - 6 & over - will be ridden in a shank/curb bit using one hand except for Snaffle Bit Division (see Performance – Rule 6).
  • A shank/curb bit must have curb strap & shanks no longer than 8 1/2 in. Solid, two or three piece mouth.
  • A snaffle bit can have solid, two or three piece mouth, no slots inside ring. Curb strap below reins optional.
  • Western performance reins are either split or romal, not one piece loop. Ends of split reins will be on same side as rein hand with only index finger between reins. One hand shall be around the romal rein with the extension carried in the free hand 16 in. from the reining hand. Any type rein in Games.
  • Turn on the forehand – to follow the horse’s head in the direction you were asked to turn (eg. If asked to turn on the forehand to the left, use left leg to push the horse’s hip around).
  • In-Hand Trail – Is a class that, just as the name implies, manuvering your horse from the ground through the trail obstacles. The obstacles are generally the same as for standard trail classes with the exception of lope-overs. Classes may include the following obstacles: a gate, walk and trot-overs, back throughs, side passing, a mail box or raincoat, a bridge, turning in a box, and walking and/or trotting through and around cones. May be shown in halter & lead, show halter with lead shank, or bridle.
  • Warm-up Ring – no loping or lunging horses while classes are being judged.
  • Attire - Performance - safety helmet, chaps and spurs optional. Rider must enter arena wearing western hat secured by proper fit and/or bobby pins or wearing a safety helmet, boots with a heel, long sleeved western shirt, long pants or jeans.
  • Tack - Performance - shown in western stock saddle with a horn. Any standard western bit appropriate to class specifications and/or age of horse. Breast collar optional. Prohibited tack - mechanical hackamore, gag bit, prong bit, whips, bats, quirts, any type martingale, tie-down, draw rein, noseband. Leg boots or bandages are allowed only in reining classes.
  • Attire - Games - rider must wear long sleeved western shirt, long pants or jeans, boots with a heel. Western hat or a safety helmet optional. Safety helmet strongly recommended for all Junior riders.
  • Tack - Games - must use western stock saddle with a horn. Tie-downs, any type martingale, 1 1/2 in. bat or popper, any humane equipment used appropriately as per judge's discretion. Prohibited tack - no tie-down or noseband with bare metal in contact with the horse's head.

PERFORMANCE

1. HALTER - Competitor will wear western attire. Horses to be shown with halter and lead.

2. SHOWMANSHIP - Judge will provide a pattern which will be posted prior to the opening of the show. Competitors will wear western attire. Horse to be shown with halter and lead shank.
3. Horsemanship Sr. - Will execute a posted pattern
4. Horsemanship Jr. A & Jr. B - will execute a simple posted pattern
5. WESTERN PLEASURE horse is a free moving horse shown at walk, jog and/or lope.
6. Walk/jog DIVISION - Two hands permitted with either snaffle or curb. May only enter other walk/jog performance and walk/jog trail classes. May enter walk/jog games. No cross entries.
7. Green Rider/Green Horse Division - 1st or 2nd year of showing on any horse.
Green Horse - 1st or 2nd year of horse showing in any western class.

8. SNAFFLE BIT DIVISION – any age horse may be shown in a snaffle bit in this division. No cross entry in any other division, with the exception of games.
9. Versatility - No posted pattern. Movements at Judge's discretion.
10. Versatility Jr. B. - Will not be asked to reverse at the lope

11. Lead Line - riders must have boots with heels when using stirrups. Safety helmet mandatory. To be JUDGED on appropriate attire and suitability of horse to rider.

13. Trail - each obstacle and gait to be judged with a score out of 10. Rider has 30 sec. to start an obstacle before being directed to go to next obstacle, resulting in 0 score for that obstacle.
10. Trail - Green Horse/rider, Jr. B, novice & walk/jog divisions - walk/jog only. Gate will be opened with forward push only..
14. OPEN DIVISION – open to all age riders & horses

15. Pleasure Stake - Judge may ask for extended gaits.

 


GAMES

 

GENERAL RULES: Western hat or helmet must be worn. There will be a 2 second penalty if rider loses their hat. Lost hats to be retrieved at the end of the day.Must at least trot all game patterns except may walk at flag barrel if necessary (exception Walk/Jog Division, see Rule # 4). Must not cross start line until end of pattern. No hitting in front of the cinch. No more than 4 hits on any run. Rider is not allowed to reset a barrel, pole or stake with their hand.

  • Jackpot classes payout – minimum 5 horses, 50/30/20 split between 1st, 2nd & 3rd. Stake/jackpot classes has $5.00 extra fee.

Flags - Cannot cross own path or circle barrel. Rider has 30 sec. to pick up flag, once rider is at first barrel. Time will count if flag is in barrel when rider crosses the finish line. Procedure - pick up flag from 1st barrel; run around second barrel, put flag back in 1st barrel. Both barrels must be standing up when the rider crosses the finish line or no time.
Barrels - Procedure - One right turn and two left turns OR one left turn and two right turns. Execute in a cloverleaf pattern. Knocked down barrel is 5 sec. penalty.
Poles - Knocked down pole is 5 sec. penalty. Procedure - Rider to run down to last pole, weave in and out each pole to first pole, turn, weave in and out each pole to last pole, then run back on opposite side to finish line. Missing a pole receives no time.
Stakes - knocked down stake receives no time. Procedure - run past 1st stake to 2nd stake turn and run back to 1st stake, turn run to 2nd stake using figure 8 pattern. Run to finish line on opposite side.
Scurry - must at least trot over all 3 jumps. Knocked down jump or end stake is 5 sec. penalty. Missing a jump receives no time. Procedure - over all 3 jumps, circle end stake either direction, back over 3 jumps. Rider has 30 seconds at the first jump to start.
Keyhole - must at least trot into pattern. Touching white line receives no time. Procedure - run into pattern, turn either direction within the pattern and must at least trot out of pattern. Rider has 30 seconds at the throat of the keyhole to start.

Distances – all games have 50ft  run from entrance to start line

Flags          start to first barrel 20 ft., between barrels 75 ft.

Barrels    40’ from start line to first barrel; 90’ between 1st & 2nd barrels; 110 ‘ between 1st or 2nd  barrel & 3rd barrel;

Poles      start to first pole 20 ft.; between poles 21 ft (6 poles)

Stakes    start to first stake 20 ft.; first to second stake 75 ft.; use 1st and 5th pole from pole bending

Scurry     start to first jump 20 ft.; between each jump 23 ft; between last jump and pole 23 ft.

Keyhole   start to top of entry chute 90 ft.      )
                 length of entry chute 10 ft              )   use measuring device for             
                 size of circle 20 ft                       )    entry chute and circle 

 

Should discrepancies arise Equine Canada guidelines and rules will apply.
