VIMY WESTERN RIDING CLUB

A Brief History of Vimy Western Riding Club, as recalled by Gord Williams

Back in the early 1960's when the club first started, some of the prominent families involved were Carlson, Gregson, Atchison, Mahew, Anderson, Carreck and Whooter Massey. In the beginning, the majority of the activities were around trail rides, and play days. As more families got involved, the Municipality of North Cowichan gave the existing grounds to the Club. This is when some small shows began taking place at the newly acquired property. As more and more families joined in the fun, rodeos became a big part of the club's activities. and became a much anticipated event for members and spectators alike, to mention nothing of the Saturday night rodeo dances that still stand out in people's memories today! Allan Nikirk and Gordie Madill supplied the rough stock for the rodeos, and much effort was put in by all to make each rodeo happen. The club also started to put on little britches rodeos, everyone was involved, lots of work needed to be done, but there were also lots of good times where life long friendships were made. Then came Island Horse Council where clubs from all over the Island hosted one show per year. All the clubs traveled to the host club's show, they would be two day shows where families stayed and camped out, many more friendships and lots of camaraderie for all. When Vimy hosted their yearly Island Council show it came with much adversity due to the fact that Vimy was strictly a western club, but in order to host a council show, every club needed to offer a minimum of two English classes. Some of Vimy's membership took real issue with this, it took a lot of convincing from a few members, but when all was said and done many years of Council shows were enjoyed by all. Out of the modeling of Council shows Vimy decided to start having point shows that continue through today. Over the years there have been many year-end banquets and dances that continue the great fun that the Club enjoys. The Club, like many others has ebbed and flowed over the years in membership. Our family has been a part of the Vimy club for about 33 years, we find it's a great place to bring your family and learn how to show as well as learn how to help one another and be involved in a community...the community of Vimy!
