Grace Tempest
Grace is the main female protaginist of the series. 14-year-old and already extremly intelligent , Grace is described as having long auburn hair and brillant emerald green eyes. Grace seems to have a strong connection with the vampirates ship and her brother Connor , she's able to take 'astral journeys' to them in times of need , such as when Lorcan became blind or Connor needed her help. Grace also seems to be able to read the ribbons at Sanctuary with amazing skill , something which impressed Mosh Zu. Whilest not physically strong Grace is portrayed as being a quick thinker and very brave , able to distract blood thirsty Sidorio long enough for help to reach her. It becomes apparent throughout the novels that Grace grows a strong bond with the Nocturn and those on it. Namely her resucer Lorcan Furey , whom she grows closet to through-out the novels , being able to feel his pain when he was blinded and forever being glad of his support and trying desperatly to get back to help him when they are seperated.
Connor Tempest
Connor is the male protaginist. 14-years old , with auburn hair and dazzling green eyes , Connor is very atheltic , able to master any sport. This athletic ability helps Connor fit in aboard the Diablo , gaining respect and admiration amongst his friends such as Bart and Cate and also his Captain , Molucco Wrathe and Cheng Li . Connor seems at once enraptured by pirating , he along with his buddies Bart and Jez cannot find anything better to do that enjoy 'a short life but a happy one'. Connor also makes strong bonds with those at Pirate Accademy , Ma Kettle and Sugar Pie , finding a new family amonst the world of pirates. However Connor may not be as at ease with the pirating world as he wishes , ever since the death of his friend Jez , Connor as doubted Captian Wrathe's credibilty and wonders if he can face taking another person's life. These doubts only grow as Connor is faced with his first kill. Connor is haunted by his actions and fears he is a terrible person , these worries cause Connor to leave the Diablo and seek a new out look of piracy as he tries to deal with his guilt and potential to have a sucessful career.
Lorcan Furey
Lorcan is Grace's rescuer , and the first vampirate she meets in the books. Seven-hundred and nine years old , born in Connemara Ireland Lorcan crossed when he was just 17in Dublin. Lorcan through-out the novels proves to be a very noble and caring character. Obeying the Captains orders and looking after donors , even when faced with going against Sidorio. Lorcan also seems to care very deeply for Grace , vowing to do anything to protect her , costing him his sight. Lorcan's bond with Grace also causes him to stop feeding when she leaves , this causes worry and made his chances of regaining his sight less likely. Thankfully , Lorcan's vision does return at some point , leaving him able to protect and look after Grace and work hard aboard the Nocturn. Lorcan also as a ring engraved with two hands clasping a skull , this he gives to Grace letting her beging her astral visions and also it seems to have many other powers which only Lorcan can use.
Darcy Flotsam
Darcy in her own words is a 'figure of fun' aboard the Nocturn . Darcy serves the purpose of the ships figure head during the day , and striking the bell which alerts the Vampirates aboard the Nocturn to the rising and setting of the sun. Darcy's crossing story is an interesting one in that when she died her soul became fused into the figure hed of the ship she was on. She loves fashion and dresses , namely dressing up herself and Grace , and apparently has a beatiful singing voice. Darcy has a very close realationship with Grace , Lorcan and the Captain. Also Darcy formed a very strong relationship with Jez whilest he was aboard the ship , even becoming engaged to him. But Dary's loyalties to the captain and the Nocturn's way of life prevailed when Jez overthrew the Captain , she refused to join Jez and chose to stay true to the Captain's teachings. Darcy has also displayed an amazing about of strength , being able to navigate the Nocturne alone , and preform short 'astral journeys' although not to the same degree as Grace.
The Captain
The Captain is the leader of the Vampirate ship , and one of the most mysterious characters to appear in the books. A mask is placed over his face so 'his eyes never see the light' , also he can walk in the sunlight and surive without taking blood , something which in the Vampirate world is unheard of. The Captain also inforces the rule of measured blood taking on board the ship , and seems like his mentor Mosh Zu to see the potential powers within Grace. The Captain seems to also let lost or desperate souls reside within him , although this takes a great strain on him , and he also seems to weild some sort of power over the Nocturne , being able to create mist around it and light up the sails.
Sidorio
Sidorio is leader of the renagade vampirates and captain of the 'Blood Captain' . He once lived aboard the Nocturne , however he was clearly not in favor of the ships feeding methods and killed his donor and attempted to drink Grace's blood. Sidorio was killed by Julius Cesar because he was one of the pirates repsonsible for taking the young Julis hostage , Sidorio seems very proud of his death story and thinks it's one of the best. As a leader , Sidorio is ruthless and selfish , but he has a great talent in making speeches and swaying a crowd to agree with him.
Johny D.
Johny is the co-second in command aboard the Blood Captain. He is a Vaquero , a Mexican cowboy who was a renowed expert at Bronco Busting . but was hung at the age of 18 for working with people that had stolen a heard of cattle. Johnny seems to a be a good natured vampire , who enjoys chess and becomes close to Grace after she accidentally read his ribbon. However , Johnny left his training at Sanctuary to join Sidorio's crew , after having his hunger awoken by blood slipped into his tea and trying to 'share' with Grace. Johnny is one of the most enthusiastic members aboard the Blood Captain and it was this which earned him the tile of deputy.
Shanti
Shanti was Lorcan's donor and for a short while Jez's before he killed her. Shanti , throughout the novels shows an extremly possesive nature towards Lorcan , disliking Grace for her close relationship with Lorcan. This pattern can also be seen with Jez , with Shanti becoming more spiteful towards Darcy as she and Jez grew closer. Shanti proved also to be a somewhat vain and self obsessed character , complaining about whatever displeases her. However Shanti was a seemingly masterful thief , able to steal ribions at Sanctuary without being caught.
