VA Police Department History
The United States Department of Veterans Affairs Police is the Uniformed Police and Security Service of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, responsible for the protection of the veterans hospitals and medical centers as well as other facilities operated by the Veterans Health Administration of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The agency has full arrest powers and is empowered under Title 38 of the U.S. Code.
The Veterans Administration was founded in 1930 with the VA Police beginning that same year. As the VA evolved the VA Police became a security guard force. But by a 1973 Federal Law, the guard force was abolished and the VA Police was re-established.
