Welcome to a brief but useful
learning tool to playing DragonsExodus*.
DragonsExodus* (DE* for short) is a fantasy, medieval world created
many years ago by talented coders and builders and has grown over the
last decade.
To fit into this realm, you must have a good imagination as well as
a love of quests, puzzles and role-play. Though it is not stressed into
an overbearing platitude, role-play is vital to the survival of DE*.
First and foremost, you must choose an acceptable name. Use your imagination.
Nothing commonplace like Bob or Jane. Do not throw words together like
BobJane or NancyDrew. Also unacceptable are random nouns combined like
DemonLover or SpitFire. These are not names that a mother would call
her child. Please, do not plagerize authors (Frodo or Gandalf) or create
a jumble of letters (Xqwerty) or use anything obscene/vulgar (Upyours,
EatMe, F$#&Off) in either English or another language.
Think of a race you'd like to play and the class(es) too. Be warned
that some races cannot be certain classes or that some classes may not
be offered after you pick your primary class. Some races get bonuses
but they'll also have penalties to equal them out. For example, if you
choose a dwarf, you will gain +2 to your Constitution but get a penalty
of -2 to Intelligence. If you decide to go multi-classed, there are
certain pros and cons to take into consideration. Yes, you will get
more spells and skills but the cost will be in experience. You will
need 50% more experience to raise your level, thus going up exponentially
when you reach higher levels. But the rewards can very easily outweigh
the penalties. You gain more abilities to practice but you will always
be needing more practice points in order to get them all. So... it all
depends on you: how do you want to play your character. Is he a halfling
thief or a elven ranger/druid?
Your primary class dictates the extent of which you can learn skills
& spells. Also, it sets the limit to your attributes (Strength,
Dexterity, Wisdom, Intelligence and Constitution) for the remainder
of your character's life.
Choosing your race and class(es) as well as an acceptable name, next
pick your hometown. This is the city you will always return to when
you die or use the spell "word of recall". If you are new,
I would recommend Aden as it is most centralized. Prexion is a good
alternative but it is located further in the northeast. Arnath is a
huge town but many don't like the thieves guild's control. Einar is
located on the Southern Continent and surrounded by vast deserts and
steamy jungles. Many adventurers have never returned from this holy
city.
After doing all this, I will offer you congratulations and welcome to
DE*!
*You can access DragonsExodus via telnet or a client. In all honesty,
I would recommend you use a client, from zMud to wintin to FireClient.
The list is endless but you will have much better control, less spam
and scroll back features that make things much smoother. You may "Google"
these clients and more off the internet. Some can be found on this website,
too.*
Lessons and Cheatsheet!!!
(read the helpfile on each BOLD word for detailed instructions)
HELP is the generic list of what commands you can view.
HELP "topicname" will give you more details in the helpfiles.
HELPFIND "wording" will give you a general listing of word
association to help you choose what you want to learn.
HELP COMPLETE HELPFILE INDEX
is the mother of all help file lists.
SCORE, STAT and WORTH teach you about yourself.
INVENTORY (I for short) shows what you hold.
EQUIPMENT (EQ for short) shows what you wear.
LOOK with no subject shows you the room you're in. LOOK itemname (or
person) will show you detail about them. You may even look at yourself.
EXAM is a more detailed version of LOOK.
SAY, TELL (REPLY) and CHANNEL are your communication abilities.
WHO shows you the live people from around the world enjoying DS beside
you. These are the people you get to interact with.
So... remember your manners.
GET and DROP pick up and put down things respectively.
HOLD, WEAR and WIELD equip armors and weapons. REMOVE takes an item
off.
Movement is based off the cardinal points of the compass. You have north,
south, east, west, up, down, southeast, southwest, northeast, and northwest.
You can abbreviate them as N S E W U D SE SW NE NW to save yourself
time. Be careful as each move will take a point or more off your Movement.
If it gets down to 0, you are too fatigued and will need to Sit or Sleep
or cast "refresh" upon yourself in order to keep going. Fly
(levitation, spiritual wings, wings of freedom, et cetera) will briefly
negate the need of movement points.
Each town has their own Training and Practice Masters. Most are located
in that town's respective MU* school.
TRAIN allows you to use build points to increase your ATTRIBUTES, MANA,
HITPOINTS and MOVEMENT abilities. I -highly- suggest you put -all- your
build points into training CONSTITUTION first and foremost. You must
be at a training master in order to do this.
PRACTICE allows you to see what skills & spells you have learned
to use. If you use PRACTICE in front of a practice master, this will
show you what all your capable of learning. In order to maximize your
practice points, only learn once in each. Every time afterwards, whenever
you succeed in using a skill/spell, you will go up in percentage of
that ability as well as gain free experience! Woo-hoo!
LANGUAGE is something not to worry about until you have those spare
100 or so practice points lying about unused. Most everyone speaks Common
anyways.
AFFECT (AF for short) shows you what spells/skills/ailments currently
upon you.
SLIST will show you what your class(es) will be able to learn, at what
level and the practice points it will cost to learn such. It is best
to save up for those practice-only skills. To learn more about each
skill/spell, research it in the helpfiles.
EAT and DRINK are very important. Do so often. You can eat parts from
the creatures you kill (hearts, heads, eyes, brains) but stay away from
guts as they will poison you. Drink often from the many springs, streams,
wells and fountains around the realms. You may also carry and create
your own drink and food. It is never a bad thing to be able to do so.
Making money is always a concern for your character. You'll need gold
(silver & copper) to buy potions, equipment, weapons, containers,
food as well as other supplies. One of the better ways to gain vast
fortune is to sell items you find on your dead enemies. Most stores
in cities specialize in 1 or 2 catagories of items. You've armor shops,
weapon shops, potions and scroll shops, jewelry stores, bakeries and
bars for food & drink, clerical and mage supplies not to mention
others you will find upon exploring. There are also banks for converting
one type of coin into others as well as storage for extra items.
BUY and SELL allow you to purchase or gain a few coins for items.
LIST while in a store will show you what a merchant has for sale.
KILL and CONSIDER walk hand-in-hand. CONSIDER "mobsname" measures
them up and gives you a good idea if you can KILL "mobsname".
CAST 'SPELLNAME' TARGET is the syntax for spellcasting. This may run
from blessings to curses to heals. The reason for the ' ' in this is
that some spells are multi-worded like astral walk or golden aura, so
you must use the ' ' so the game knows that 'walk' or 'aura' isn't the
target.
FLEE and WIMPY will save your life. If you take on a mob that you did
not mean to attack or one that is kicking your backside, FLEE will let
you run away at the cost of only a small bit of experience. WIMPY is
your auto-flee when you get hurt down to ##hps.
HELP MAP is your bestest friend... trust me. Use it often.
Until you can IDENTIFY objects (not mobs) with spell or scroll, you
can use COMPARE. Compare is none too accurate but it is passable.
Several important sub-directories & commands you will find very
useful are:
ALIAS CHANNEL CONFIG NOTE QUEST PROMPT SCAN & SOCIAL
Now, this is not all there is to know about DE. There are a lot more
things that you will learn in the future, like poison and what cursed
items are, picking a clan to join or how to search a room for hidden
areas, what levers and doors are... all these things will make themselves
known to you. So take full advantage of the helpfiles as they are almost
uncounted in number. If you cannot learn what you need from them, feel
free to ask players. There are even some players (Mentors) who specialize
in helping new people like you with questions.
