Welcome to the USS Voltaire. . .
"To confine our attention to terrestrial matters would be to limit the human spirit."
We are the USS Voltaire, variably known as a multi-person RPG, SIMM, or cooperative writing venture. We like to say SIMM.
But what is a SIMM you say? Well, like all things, that depends on the specific case. We are a Twenty-fourth century Star Trek SIMM, part of a large online presence of cooperative writers, all striving together to write something in a fun and enjoyable manner. For the people of the Voltaire, writing a post in the story is like watching a move flow out from your fingertips, bidden only by your thoughts. Some of us find the experience most enjoyable through novel-like format, others tend to prefer screenplay writing, such as that which you follow in a play or movie. One thing, though, remains the same: We draw entertainment and joy from both the writing, and the reading, which is why we limit the Voltaire to only SIMMers dedicated to making each and every post their best yet. We write in novel format, both structure and style, and we aim to make enjoyable posts for others to read. Most of us enjoy the process of revision and perfecting each post just as much as reading a thoroughly good post, but there are also some of us who can sit down and write that whole big edited post out in one sitting, no revisions. It all depends on who you are. Never fear, writers on the Voltaire will never fail to fin help in writing if and when they need it, and you don't have to have that post out right now! Once a week is all we ask, for a page or two of your writing to contribute.
All well and good, yes I know, but you want to know if you'd really like to join? Well here at the Voltaire, we draw our structure mainly from a coalition of SIMMs known as Bravo Fleet, and more particularly, the Excelsior-C. You don't have to be a huge ST buff, I'm not! sure, knowledge helps, and I doubt you'll join without the baseline knowledge needed for it, anyhow, but what counts much, much, much more than hardcore technical knowledge of the Trek universe, is that you are a good writer. Chances are, the moment they saw the words Star Trek on this page, half of the people closed the page. Well, the other half, if you still harbor doubts, think of it this way - here is your chance to be a part of Star Trek as never before, live it in words, and do what you would do in a situation. You get to live another life, here, and that's what we want - people who can come on here and portray another world with only lines shining out of a monitor. That is our latinum, and you worth your weight if you can do it.
I know this doesn't come close to explaining all of this to a person new to SIMMin, there are so many nuances that are so hard to grasp if you're locked into the traditional way of thinking in forums, so if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please, email me at Unknown_Gamer@aemail4u.com.
