Advanced Battlegrounds:The Future Of Combat
[aka Chrome Gold Edition]
Techland / DreamCatcher
[top]
This improved gold edition of the Polish developer's Techland game Chrome is being released under the name Advanced Battlegrounds in North America as presumably the original did not sell well there so doesn't have a good enough name recognition factor. This edition offers all kinds of goodies besides eight additional single and Multiplayer maps. There is an official Soundtrack CD, a Chrome mouse pad as well as the revised mission and map editor including new, extensive guidance in the video format. Many challenges await in the new Multiplayer challenges (for up to 32 players), even if the required solo missions are played to the end and there is improved AI in the computer opponents. There are also new vehicles.

The title comes from military jargon for a complete system shutdown of all internal electrical and bio-mechanical systems generally created by an EMP blast or similar electrical disturbance in the local vicinity. Use Biomods to customize, upgrade and exploit the superhuman powers of your character. Build an emotional connection to your comrades in battle; during the missions you have the power to rescue, heal and protect them. The wide variety in mission pacing ranges from frenetic action of battlefield chaos to tactical infiltration style missions. Doom 3: Resurrection Of Evil
Nerve Software / id Software
[top]
The Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil expansion was farmed out to Nerve Software. Through the discovery of a timeless and evil artifact you now hold the powers of Hell in your hands, and the demons have come to hunt you down and take it back. Following the events of DOOM 3, new characters include Vulgars (same as Imps only faster and they do a lot more wall crawling), Bruisers (half mechanical monsters with computer monitors for their mouths, they have a tendency to hide as wall monitors and then bust through the walls after you), The Forgotten (same as the Lost Souls in Classic Doom), and Hell Hunters (like floating legless HellKnights, these monsters have the ability to warp time). New weapons/items include the Double Barrel Shotgun, The Grabber (gravity gun), The Artifact (allows the player to manipulate time by slowing the world down and also increases damage and makes you invincible), Haste and Invulnerability powerups, and Environment suits will have flashlights mounted on them. New MultiPlayer features include four new MP maps - two are in Hell, one in the ancient civilization, then another base type map. The maps will be considerably larger than DOOM 3's. You play as a Combat Engineer, not the Doom 3 Marine, and travel to Site 1, an abandoned base which is the first UAC Mars expedition, and contains remains of an ancient Martian civilization (looks like Quake 1), to investigate a distress signal. Later you also travel to Phobos via sky trams. You are to accompany a scientist called Dr Elizabeth McNeil, former associate of Betruger, and keep an eye on her. Betruger has turned into a demon and called three 'Hunter' demons to reclaim the artifact. These demons are bosses and you battle them separately for their special powers, including 'Helltime'. In the end, you battle Betruger in Hell.

SWAT 4 Irrational Games / Vivendi Universal Games [top]
After a long 6 years since SWAT 3 was released and the total scrapping of the game SWAT Urban Justice, this new game was finally developed from scratch. It allows players to take control of a squad of up to five police officers tasked with performing dangerous operations such as high-risk arrests, hostage rescue and counter-terrorism. As the unit's commander, players must follow authentic police tactics as they breach and clear a concrete jungle filled with armed felons and innocent bystanders alike. Featuring graphics courtesy of the Vengeance engine powered by Unreal, SWAT 4 delivers 16 authentic environments set in stunningly rendered locations representing a wide variety of operational environments. Realistic ballistics and Havoc defined object physics will further heighten the experience for the player by providing an added layer of atmospheric authenticity. As S.W.A.T. officer, players will have access to authentic assault gear including tactical mainstays such as the Colt M-4 carbine, the Benelli M4 Super 90 shotgun and Surefire tactical lights. However, as with their real-world counterparts officers in SWAT 4 have to hit hard-and-fast in order to take down the bad guys and keep the innocent out of harms way. SWAT 4 will also ship with three competitive multiplayer modes as well as a cooperative campaign mode.

CT Special Forces: Fire For Effect [Nemesis Strike]
Asobo Studio / Hip Games
[top]
At its console launch in 2001 the CT (Counter Terrorism) Special Forces licence met with immediate success on release. In this first PC venture, you belong to an elite force fighting against global counter-terrorism. Your team is made up of two crack agents poised to react to any threat. Stealth Owl is an infiltration expert, whose skills are accuracy and skydiving. Raptor uses weapons of mass destruction and favours close combat. Your main objective is to dismantle the NEMESIS network and retrieve the stolen technology. But by changing the chemical properties of certain proteins, the terrorists have made their fighters much more aggressive. The game benefits from a cutting edge game engine and a specific physics system. You can destroy any kind of environment, requisition military vehicles and feel right at the centre of the action. For the first time, physics will have a major impact on how you play the game. The weapons used in-game are the result of scientific research: amongst the varied arsenal are electromagnetic bombs and holographic gadgets to destabilise your enemies, LCD corner-shot machine guns, heat-seeking rocket launchers, drones, infra-red vision, sonar vision, etc.; brace yourself against the blast of each explosion. The dynamic effects on impacts, shock waves and explosions are extraordinary. Terrifying aerial combat in free fall requiring precision and a highly developed sense of direction. You can requisition vehicles and change tactics - use jeeps, boats, hovercrafts, etc. Superb AI has enemies react to situations, plan raids, retreats and strategic offensives.

Elite Warriors: Vietnam Nfusion / Bold Games [top]
This game comes from New Jersey-based nFusion Interactive, whose previous work includes the Deadly Dozen and the Cabela's hunting games. In Elite Warriors: Vietnam, soldiers will operate in small groups deep in the Southeast Asian jungle. Top-secret missions include rescuing downed pilots, capturing enemies, and plotting targets for air strikes. Gamers will lead Green Berets and Montagnard tribesmen into Laos across several multiple-objective missions. The game was developed under the tutelage of Major John L. Plaster, author and decorated Vietnam veteran. "This is the way we actually operated, they got it right," Plaster said. Excerpts and photos from Plaster's book, Secret Commandos, will be included with the game. Each mission in Elite Warriors: Vietnam was developed with the direct assistance of this former Studies and Observations Group (SOG) member and best-selling author who served three full combat tours as a recon team leader and led small 6-8 man recon teams on covert missions along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos. In the game, you will fight along side Green Beret commandoes as you conduct classified missions deep in Southeast Asia. By using patrol techniques still being used today in Iraq and Afghanistan you will rescue downed pilots, ambush convoys, seize enemy prisoners, and discover targets for air attacks.

Boiling Point: Road To Hell Deep Shadows / Russobit-M / Atari [top]
Boiling Point: Road to Hell is set in the intense tropical heat of the South American jungle, where players take Saul Meyers, a decorated Legionnaire, way beyond the limit of any man's patience. Saul has reached his point of no return - his life threatened, his family compromised, he's a desperate man, ready to take matters to the ultimate extreme to protect the life of his daughter, Lisa. Set in the South American jungle, this massive gaming world spans 625 square Km (25 km x 25 km) bigger than the city of Chicago), and is populated throughout with friend and foe. Asynchronous loading of required resources creates a seamless game world with no levels and no loading times! The non-linear plot gives the player the chance to choose exactly how they play the game. Guns blazing, or sneaking around? Rescue Lisa, or leave her to rot? The choice is yours. There's hundreds of NPC's to interact with, all of which behave differently and offer different types of information depending on what you ask and how you ask it. Every encounter and every interaction within the game directly affects your standing and reputation in the eyes of the 6 NPC factions, with potentially dire or wonderful consequences resting on a knife edge of decision. Many vehicles can be bought, stolen or hijacked to help you travel around the massive environment or to get you out of trouble fast, including cars, trucks, helicopters, boats and even a tank.

Area 51 (2005)
Midway Games Austin / Midway Games
[top]
This is a remake of the original popular arcade game which also had a PC version released in 1996, which was a rail shooter (i.e. your path through the game was predetermined and you just shot what came in your way) whereas this game is a fully 3D FPS game where you can go wherever you want. The U.S. Army has received a distress signal from Area 51 where a viral outbreak has just shut down the research facility and the automated quarantine procedures have locked all scientific and military personnel inside. A small Special Forces unit including Specialist Ethan Cole of the HAZMAT (hazardous materials) Division is sent to investigate. As Cole, players delve into the massive levels within the confines of Area 51, only to discover a deadly mutagenic side effect of the virus that controls the minds of those infected, as well as an ancient alien colony buried beneath the facility. Players will uncover the truth behind chilling conspiracies as they come across the remnants of the extraterrestrial crash at Roswell, alien autopsies, and the faked lunar landing. Cole must solve the enigma of Area 51 before the viral mutagen is released and irrevocably mutates all life on Earth. Cast in the lead role is David Duchovny, star of the ultimate conspiracy-theory television show, The X-Files, who lends his instantly recognizable voice to AREA 51's lead character, Specialist Ethan Cole, a special forces soldier specializing in hazardous materials investigations. Powers Boothe, who currently appears in the HBO mini-series Deadwood, provides the voice of Major Bridges, while shock rocker Marilyn Manson delivers an unforgettable performance as Edgar, the gray alien. Rainbow Six 3 MP#2: Iron Wrath
Ubi Soft
[top]
This expansion pack that was on the drawing board for almost 2 years has been released for free (maybe to make up for the cancellation of the PC version of Ghost Recon :p ). It includes a new 7-mission campaign, 3 "classic" R6 missions, 6 new real-world weapons, and 5 new multiplayer modes. 1) In Virus Uploaded mode, one team has a virus disk and has to either pass off the disk to a teammate, or upload the virus onto a computer. If they hold onto the disk for too long, they become visible through the walls until they die, or pass on the disk. 2) Intruder is a super fun gametype... One team has to defend the terminals, while the other team has to destroy them. It takes about 25 seconds to destroy a terminal, unless you are the intruder. The intruder can do it in about 3, AND the intruder has the same skin on as the defender, except he has a black helmut. So the intruder becomes very valuable to the attacking team, and the defending team really must kill him soon. The attacking team must destroy all 3 terminals to win. 3) Free Backup is another really cool gametype, where you get to take up to 3 AIs as your bodyguards. They will just be sitting there on the ground, and you can activate them. They will then shoot at any enemies you can see. Really fun. 4) In Limited Seats, you have to escort prisoners to a safe zone. If a single prisoner dies, you lose the round, so protect them well. 5) Gas Alert is by far the coolest new gametype. Each player has a limited supply of air (about 30 seconds). Before they run out, they need to get to a terminal and "refill" their lungs. If you are gimped, you are totally screwed... Gone are the net code problems that one would typically associate with Athena Sword.

Never seen in a game, an innovative interrogation system allows gamers direct control over the amount of punishment enemies receive before releasing important information. The game's lighting system is extremely precise and plays an important role in the gameplay, as does the sound environment, where a 3D model of the sound transmission has been applied to the scenes. Caution is advised, as depending on the environment the enemy detects the player's presence through sight and sound...

Driv3r
Reflections Interactive / Atari
[top]
Nine months separate the PC release of Driver 3 from the release of its critically pounded console counterparts. You might assume that the large gap between the borderline-broken console versions and the newly released PC edition was used to fix the game's serious problems but no. The Driver series is helmed by an undercover cop named Tanner. This time around, Tanner is trying to infiltrate a Miami-based car thief ring, which is working to steal 40 exotic cars and ship them out of Miami. Part of the game's story involves finding out who the thieves in the car ring are working for, where the cars are going, and who's double-crossing whom. You'll start out in Miami, eventually make your way to Nice for some French car chases, and you'll also spend some time in Istanbul. The story is mostly told via some good prerendered cutscenes. Driver 3's main mode is a linear, mission-based game that sends you on mission after mission until you've unraveled the game's story. Each mission has clear-cut objectives, like chasing after a guy who double-crossed your gang, stealing three cars and driving them into the back of a moving truck before the truck gets to its destination, or driving around on an enemy's turf and busting up the place by crashing through exploding barrels and other objects. You may be surprised to find yourself spending quite a lot of time out of your car, and that's where the first significant gameplay problem comes to light: The on-foot action is awful. Your control over Tanner is stiff, at best. You can fire weapons, you can halfheartedly jump, and you can duck to perform some pretty lame rolls. The gunplay, despite giving you access to a number of different pistols, submachine guns, an assault rifle, a shotgun, and a grenade launcher, is decidedly underwhelming. The combat in the game isn't tense at all, and it mostly consists of running up to enemies and blasting them... before they blast back. However, the game is pretty liberal with the health packs, so you can certainly trade shots with most of your foes without worrying too much. Since most of the game's artificial intelligence is incompetent, you can usually get the drop on the bad guys. Michael Madsen voices Tanner, Michelle Rodriguez is Calita and there's also Mickey Rourke, Iggy Pop, and Ving Rhames, who plays your partner in the game and narrates most of the cutscenes. There's over 60 drivable vehicles, including motorcycles, boats, police cars, vans, mopeds, muscle cars and 18-wheelers, all fully destructible. There's also a mission called "The Hit" found only on DRIV3R's PC release. The Film Director Mode is one of the DRIVER brand's most popular aspects - gamers can record the action using multiple camera views, and edit original chase sequences which can be played back and stored.

Second Sight gives players control of a character endowed with incredible psychic abilities. The game offers multiple approaches to completing levels either via stealth, dramatic gunplay, psychic powers or a combination of all three. The ability to psychically influence characters and remotely manipulate objects and individuals provides for a totally fresh gameplay dynamic. The game opens with John Vattic, the player-controlled lead character, as he awakens from a coma in a US medical facility where he has been subjected to traumatic surgery and experimentation. He doesn't know his name, he can't remember his past, all he knows is that his only hope for survival is to escape and unravel the mystery that has led to his imprisonment. Haunted by flashbacks, which are experienced as fully playable episodes within the game, and shocked by the discovery of his own psychic powers, the player takes Vattic on a search for his past and, in doing so, uncovers a fatal chain of events leading to a sinister conspiracy. As Vattic explores his present and past, the game weaves between these two different time periods, which run through the game as a dual-narrative. The player-controlled actions of the past Vattic have consequences in the present, allowing a unique interaction between the player and the narrative of the game as Vattic's destiny is changed.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Rockstar Games / Take-Two Interactive Software
[top]
The follow-up to the immensely popular Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City draws upon a conceptual style reminiscent of the popular 1990s gangsta films like Boyz in the Hood and Juice. Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers. Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster. On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets. The game will be about 5 times the size of Vice City and features a 50% increase in polygons. There are actually three cities in San Andreas based on real life locations like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. They are all interconnected with miles of interconnected freeways, deserts, mountains, rivers, and more. Communities are a lot more believable; civilians go around with purpose. You'll notice customers drive up to a pizza shop, park (and sometimes crash), enter the Pizza place, order some food, eat it and get on with the rest of their duties. It's entirely possible to drive from one end of the county to the other without ever seeing a loading screen (only a slight one whenever you enter an interior location) thanks to enhancements made to the streaming technology. Riding a bike in GTA is going to provide a lot of fun, whether it be nipping down a tight alley to avoid pursuers or hurtling down the infamous mountain range that apparently takes close to 30 minutes to cycle up. There is now the ability to customise CJ through the food he eats, the clothes he wears and his choice of haircut. There are consequences if you don't eat or eat too much. Additionally, CJ can now swim, has improved hand-to-hand combat skills, has the ability to recruit NPCs to follow him in his gang, can wear various new outfits, and can work out at a gym to become stronger. CJ can even improve specific player attributes and skills. There will be on-rails shooting segments where we have to gun people down while literally riding shotgun in a car that someone else is driving. There are also gambling mini-games of unknown type that apparently makeup a fully operational casino. More cab-missions (pizza deliveries, ambulance driving stuff, vigilante stuff, et cetera) will also be included. Side-missions also now help develop "skills" for use in later plot-critical missions.

[top]
Release date: 01.09.05
This game is loosely based on the classic story of The Island of Dr. Moreau. In 1878 Dr. Morhead, a masterful physiologist, is howled out of England for his ambitious and rather disgusting experiments on animals. On a small, uninhabited, volcanic island in the Pacific, his work in his "Temple of Rebirth" sought to alter animals to look, feel and behave more like humans, to create a new type of clean and perfect community. However, animals are born as the children of nature, so their suffering bodies retained wild souls. The creatures' true nature could not be concealed forever, and the day came when Dr. Morhead fell prey to his own creations and the temple burned into ruins. 100 years later, unexpected circumstances lead you to that isle. You have no other choice than to start exploring this lost world. As you proceed further you discover that this unknown land is not uninhabited. Indeed, for the last century it has served as a proving ground for the newest biological technologies. Further investigation reveals the island's horrifying secret.

Cold War: Behind The Iron Curtain
Mindware Studios / DreamCatcher Interactive
[top]
Release date: 20.09.05
Chaser Jones, a journalist for a large American newspaper, is as much a newsman as Indiana Jones is an archeologist. Part bloodhound, investigative journalist, war correspondent and adventurer, Chaser always winds up in the middle of the action, putting his life on the line to grab the 'scoop' before it grabs him. This time, on the trail of a hot story, Chaser arrives right in the middle of the communist USSR at the height of the Cold War. While there, he comes across a plot to sabotage the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, but soon discovers that Chernobyl is just the beginning. He's on the trail of a far-reaching conspiracy, which might be too much for one journalist to handle. During his dangerous adventures, Chaser has to draw on all his abilities and experience gained during previous assignments. Among them, stealth plays a leading role: Chaser is able to move quietly and furtively, he can slip behind enemies unnoticed, ducks for cover behind various objects, hides in the shadows. He knows how to disable alarms, pick locks or confound security cameras. When he gets into a tight spot he's good with his gun, though he'd much rather try avoiding and outsmarting the enemy than come face to face with them. Chaser's investigations take him to places such as Chernobyl and Baikonur, where he must summon all his strength, not just to get his scoop, but merely to survive.

Release date: 01.10.05.
From a new development team comprised of Alexander Seropian and former Bungie Studio employees and powered by an updated Halo engine, this third-person action game lets you play as a zombie named Stubbs. Equipped with his rotten carcass, the ability to turn his foes into fellow zombies, and the use of weaponry confiscated from the enemies he possesses in his plight, Stubbs needs to work his way through numerous, highly-original indoor and outdoor environments reminiscent of 1950's sci-fi movies. During his conquest, Stubbs will face off against such classic 1950's anti-heroes as "mad scientists, rural militiamen and the world's deadliest barbershop quartet". The advantage of being a zombie is that players can rely on Stubbs' rotting body parts for offensive weapons. Amongst the hero's personal bag of tricks are explosive gut grenades, a remote-controlled severed hand, and flatulence powerful enough to overtake any of the platoons in this original new title. :-P

In 2010 different parties penetrate into the area, mostly adventurers, the Stalker are called; they hope to find artifacts and to sell them for big profits. The game developers are portraying the surroundings around Chernobyl very realistically (with several fictitious facts, because the play is set in the future). The towns of Chernobyl and Pripyat can be investigated, as well as military and scientific arrangements (all the local population has more or less left). With NPC's you can communicate and artifacts are exchanged and sold, therefore it has some roleplaying elements. The pictures and videos which are available up to now show Stalker offers extremely impressive graphics and could become a top hit.

Quake IV
Raven Software / Activision
[top]
Release date: 01.11.05
Announced as being in development back in 2001, the first true info and images were releasd in a PC Gamer article in Sep/2004. id though has handed the reigns over to Raven Software, developers of Heretic, Hexen, SOF2 and Jedi Academy. Whenever id makes new technology, Raven is in on it from the beginning and using the Doom 3 engine enabled them to concentrate on the single and multiplayer game elements rather than the engine and look with id there to help out. Quake IV will actually form a direct sequel to Quake II and you'll renew combat against the cybernetic Strogg just moments after the original game ended with the defeat of the Makron. However this time you won't be fighting alone and you'll be battling alongside fellow marines who Raven are certain will prove more than just Strogg-fodder this time around. The battle is set to commence on both interior and exterior levels across the Strogg homeworld and of course there'll be the classic weapons, featuring returning favourites like the blaster, machinegun, nailgun and shotgun. Most intriguingly of all, Quake IV is set to feature vehicular combat for the very first time.

BioShock Irrational Games [top]
Release date: 01.11.05
Irrational's next game which has been in design for some three years now, will be a "spiritual successor" to System Shock 2 due to their not having the rights to the franchise anymore. It uses an enhanced version of the Tribes Vengeance engine, which is itself a heavily modifed version of Epic's Unreal engine. The horror-themed gameplay experience takes place in a mysterious genetic laboratory. The complex is strewn with corpses and is apparently a holdover from World War II. It has only recently come back into use by the scientists circa the early 21st century, and advanced, top-secret contraptions used for arcane biotechnology experiments have been hastily bolted into the rotting walls. You'll find it inhabited by three primary "castes" of creatures - "drones," "predators," and "soldiers" -- creatures that might once have been human but are part monster. The drones' daily routine involves roving the compound in search of corpses, which they feed on, digest, and process the dead flesh into usable, recyclable genetic material and return to the complex with their harvest. Predators, which may have originally been conceived of as warriors for the mysterious scientists, have instead turned on the colony and developed a taste for drones. The extremely tough soldiers were put in place to guard drones. You'll spend a good deal of the game trying to devise both direct and indirect means of acquiring harvested DNA called "plasmids" from drones which can be injected into your body to grant a wide array of enhanced abilities--including powers that can indirectly help you take advantage of your environment like resistance to extreme air pressure or extreme temperatures. However, you'll only have a limited number of "slots" for different plasmids, and in addition, you'll be able to swap out new plasmids only by using certain one-use stations scattered throughout the complex. You will have five basic weapon classes, including pistols, shotguns, and rifles. However you won't keep picking up new guns as you go but instead will have a prototype hardware for each weapon class and end up finding or scrounging up additional upgrades for your weapons that you can use to turn a rifle into a sniper rifle for example. These upgrades can also be used for a biological scanning device you'll carry that can capture photos, like a camera. If you can capture exceptionally clear photos of specific creatures, you'll actually be able to expose their weaknesses and will grant you a bonus in battle the next time you encounter them.

Duke Nukem Forever
3D Realms Entertainment / Take 2 Interactive Software
[top]
Release date: "When it's done".
It's appropriate that this game entry is being added on April 1st because this is the most often-delayed game ever announced and most frustrating to fans of the classic Duke Nukem 3D. Originally it started development in early 1998 on the Quake II engine but then they changed to the Unreal engine having to redo all maps and meshes over, though textures have been kept the same. They added LOD, skeletal animation, motion capture, and tons of other little enhancements to the Unreal engine to make it more interactive. Last seen at the 2001 E3 game exhibition, supposedly the game looks much different than the last movie trailers shown then. Here's the game description:
"Duke Nukem Forever takes place in Las Vegas and surrounding areas. Duke's main foe is Dr. Proton, a 7'6" cyborg who was Duke's nemesis in the first Duke Nukem game. Dr. Proton has taken over Area 51 and nuked Las Vegas. He uses the spacecraft at Area 51 to contact aliens around the galaxy and recruit them for his army. Dr. Proton has also reanimated the Area 51 guards to do his bidding, and given them bionic enhancements. With this army, Dr. Proton plans to take over the world and kill Duke."
