This game comes from the Ukranian developer of Codename Outbreak. In 2010 the player is held in a virtual reality called Firestarter. A virus has taken over the system and has changed the play rules. You must escape within 48 hours from the VR, or you die (also in the real world). There are 20 weapons, 16 levels in 4 worlds. The graphics are from its own engine and look partially very good. There are 20 different opponents from 3 groups you'll face off against. They range from robots and zombies to demons and lizardlike aliens and others. There are 6 player characters, for example: policeman, cyborg and mutant who have their own character traits of strength, armor, and quickness. They are further developed by number of kills you get. In addition, every character has special abilities and favourite weapons. It is most similar to UT and Quake 3 as a simple run and gun game. There is nothing innovative about the game but it looks good and provides the requisite gory deaths. |

|
Unlike most hunting games, here you'll encounter animals which can also kill you. There are 27 species including exotic animals like the leopard, polar bear, moose, wild boar, zebra, hyena, and impala. There are 12 different locales across the world like in Alaska, British Columbia, Colorado, New Mexico, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, among others. Each offers two hunting grounds, and each can be visited during different seasons. The three game modes include: Action zone - which pits you against successive waves of charging animals which you must kill before you head through a glowing green portal to the next area (this mode is lamely repetitive, too short, and too easy), a simulation-oriented Quick Hunt mode - where you can only shoot legal game (or other animals purely in self-defense) before any other predators get to it, and Career mode - where you can create a character, edit their ability stats, buy and sell equipment, and earn money as you complete charter hunts for a specific type of game. You can choose from an array of weapons and gear that you can carry including semiautomatic, bolt-, and lever-action rifles, as well as a few shotguns, revolvers, bows, and knives. You can use different scopes, binoculars, suitable clothing for the climate, a map or GPS unit, calls, decoys, lures, and more. The graphics are pretty good giving even cloud shadows and an animal's breath in winter, and the sounds are well done and realistic. However, be prepared for waiting around or searching for up to an hour on medium or high difficulty for the animal you're looking for to show up just like in real life. |

|
The FBI Hostage Rescue team is called in when negotiations have broken down and there are only a few crucial minutes left before the hostage takers start killing the hostages. When you start each of the 10 single-player missions, you are given a diagram of the building you are about to enter with several key marks indicating possible entry points and other info. However, even if you kill all the terrorists, if you don't lead the hostages out of the building within the time limit, you lose! What makes this even worse is that the hostage's artificial intelligence and pathfinding is so bad that you'll spend almost all your time trying to get them out while they keep getting stuck on objects or wandering off by themselves and even through closed doors. Speaking of doors, sometimes unlocked ones open on their own accord or frequently open partway, pushing you backward from the doorway every time you get near leading to a lot of wasted time just getting through them. The hostages also say the same lines over and over so that you wish the terrorists would just kill them to make them shut up. Simply awful game. |

This Italian FPS game is just a historical reconstruction of what happened in those bloody days: you will see the scenarios and the most important battles of the war, but you will never see a political involvement in any of the two factions. The menu, the levels, the weapons, the uniforms and all the details of the game are inspired by the documents and photos of that period. This is a multiplayer FPS game. |
Epic Games and Digital Extreme plan to bring out annually a new version of Unreal Tournament similar to EA-Games and their Fifa and NHL franchises which keep improving their genres year after year. The game features the return of assault mode on such levels as fast-moving trains barreling across an arid alien desert or on a Skaarj mother ship. There's also the new onslaught mode where each team has to control strategic points in order to attack and destroy the enemy power core. Taking place in massive outdoor environments, it also adds new flying and driving machines ranging from single man fighters to five man behemoths which take combatants to the frontline and gigantic mobile battle stations serve as a platform from which to launch devastating attacks. The game also comes with 45 new maps to toy around with, bringing the total of levels in the game to a whopping 95. There are also 3 new weapons: the Mine layer (which disperses spider-like bombs that chase and harass any enemy that comes within range), the AVRiL anti vehicle rocket launcher (which deals out a payload of massive rockets tuned to seek and destroy enemy mechanized units), and the Grenade Launcher, which launches timed explosives that will bounce on the ground and stick to enemies and enemy vehicles, only to be triggered by the weapons altfire command. A revamped version of the notorious Sniper Rifle also returns. There are 32 new characters on four new teams: the human Thunder Crash, the Robotic Corrupt, the Skaarj warriors team Iron Skull, and the Hellions made up of human mercenaries and pirates. It also offers many improvements such as voice-over IP support, voice recognition for bot commands, improved AI, redesigned menus and huds, among many others. |

From German developer Crytek, comes this critically acclaimed game with state of the art graphics. As Jack Carver you bring a woman reporter to a remote island. When your boat is attacked you lose contact with her and wash up on a beach where you must rescue her from heavily armed mercenaries. The graphics show various environments like the beach, jungle and volcano is such high detail as never seen before in a game. The enemies are very smart and cooperate, search cover or swarm out, some give fire protection, while the others try to encircle the player. At times it's too tough as any small noise you make while you are trying to avoid them can bring them to full alert. You can also use a variety of vehicles, including jeeps, hang gliders, and boats, and have the use of a combo binoculars/sound microphone to investigate areas away from you. There are various weapons with different capabilities that you must weigh in choosing the 4 at a time that you can only carry. The singleplayer game is awesome and provides a huge 20 hours of gameplay. There are only three multiplayer game modes: free-for-all, team deathmatch, and assault ane the number of maps are limited so far but they have released now an SDK for players to make their own. The large maps are more suitable to large numbers of players only though, vehicles are not that useful as you can't go into the jungles with them so you have to use the roads and there's weapon balance issues with the sniper rifle and rocket launcher being the most effective. But just for the graphic richness and great single player game alone this is a must play. |

Condition Zero is the long awaited singleplayer version of the most popular multiplayer online shooter Counter-strike. The 3-year development was carried out by 3 different developer studios or was botched. In Condition Zero your teammates and opponents are all bots who vary in skill, aggressiveness, choice of weapon, and tendency to cooperate with the rest of the team. Those with greater skill and more-powerful weapons cost more points to hire, but you'll earn points steadily as you make your way through the game's campaign. It offers 6 tours of duty with 3 maps each for a total of 18 missions. Most of the maps are from Counter-Strike's classic collection such as Dust, Aztec, and Italy but some have been tweaked a lot. Beating each map requires you to win at least three rounds against the terrorists, and you must be ahead of the terrorists by at least two successive wins while also completing a number of special challenges usually getting a certain total number of kills, getting kills with a specific weapon, rescuing hostages, and/or winning a round under a certain amount of time. The bot A.I. is usually very good and they can make complex tasks needed to carry out their mission. Your teammates communicate with you constantly by voice telling you where they are, what they're doing, and if they've spotted an enemy. Also included in the game are "deleted scenes" which actually is the single-player campaign that Ritual was working on before game development was handed off to Turtle Rock. These 12 missions have some nice scripted sequences and decent action but feel a bit outdated by the couple of years ago that they were made. You can also play the classic multiplayer Counter-Strike with this game but all in all, it doesn't offer much new or worthwhile besides being able to play offline the classic game. |

Investigation of the surroundings should become an important part of the play and with hidden weapons and other items, the players who explore a lot should have advantages. Different vehicles and flight devices can also be used. |

The player will be constantly outnumbered, fighting against seemingly insurmountable odds. It uses a proprietary 3D engine capable of pumping out 100X the polygons of some of the latest shooters, while adding increased texture quality and the latest lighting and shadowing techniques. It features a standard single player campaign, with additional modes to encourage replay and full multiplayer support and the use of combo weapons. Your unholy pact gives you the power to morph into a powerful possessed creature with every 100 souls collected. Advanced AI coding will simulate group behaviours. Monsters don't spawn onto the map, they patrol. They are constantly aware of the player, and will coordinate their attacks by retreating, regrouping and counterattacking. The game employs the Havok physics engine, allowing for inverse kinematics ("rag-doll physics") and deformable, interactive environments. |

This freeware game is 2 years in the making and is the first of a planned trilogy of chapters. Later an uncut "final" version with some more kb, enhanced content and less bugs will be released. There is no magical data compression machine that is able to squeeze hundreds of megabytes of mesh/texture and sound data into 96k. The individual steps employed by the artists to produce their textures and meshes, are merely stored in a very compact way notably with a lot of MMX optimisations. This allows much higher data density than is achievable with normal data compression techniques, at some expense in artistic freedom and loading times. The game requires a relatively high-end machine to run properly. See Info link for system requirements. |

While you do get the standard weapons (machine gun, shotgun, rocket launcher, grenade launcher and more) you can mix and match some of them (shotgun in one hand and machine gun in the other). Combo kills, where you can send your enemies flying with repeated attacks, get you more money that you can use to get new weapons or upgrade existing one with the help of a friendly female broker. The Aspero finds itself in a spaceship cemetery where you intervene as a player in the events. You take over the role one of those supersoldiers and investigate the surroundings and try to get the spaceship free. Designwise, Kreed does gives a good impression. The main attention is on singleplayer but there will also be the usual multiplayer team matches. |

| Doom 3 |
id Software / Activision |
[top] |
|
This is the eagerly anticipated game from id Software, the makers of the all-time classics Doom and Quake. The glimpses fans saw of it beforehand showed it to be using cutting-edge graphics and an alpha was leaked on the net beforehand. Doom 3 is essentially a remake of the original Doom so rather than an immersive gameplay experience it still retains a simplistic shoot enemies as they pop out at you pattern. There are reimagined versions of almost every monster from both Doom and Doom II. You play a 22nd-century space marine called by the Union Aerospace Corporation to its Mars research facility that is having mysterious problems. You'll end up single-handedly fighting back legions of hellspawn using weapons like shotguns, machine guns, and rocket launchers. Most levels though are linear and there's not a really exciting or new storyline to amaze you other than the nice atmosphere and super graphics. You'll frequently find voice recordings and e-mail from various characters in order to get passcodes for locked doors and storage chests. Some things are annoying like you can't carry a flashlight and gun at the same time and due to the highly detailed graphics you'll rarely face more than a few foes at a time, and as you kill them their bodies instantly disintegrate into ash. Already users are making mods to alter these gameplay aspects. However, what is great about the game is unrelenting darkness and the disturbing and nicely animated monsters. The physics and graphics engine is very well done. As for multiplayer, the game supports only up to four players on a handful of maps and in a small number of different deathmatch-style modes. |

| Half-Life 2 |
Valve / VU Games |
[top] |
 |
A small, completely unknown developing team succeeded in 1998 to create, with the game Half-Life, one of the biggest 3-d action hits for the PC. Half-Life's innovative successes with a lot of scripted events and intelligent opponents raised the bar for 3d-Shooter games upwards for all those that followed. However, not only the game in itself was a great success, but also the Mod abilities were used more than anytime before. "Team Fortress" soon appeared in a patch, a brilliant multiplayer mod and with "Counterstrike" the most successful Mod scene reached its climax. The "They Hunger" trilogy offered brilliant and fun play for free download as well. After Half-Life 2 was announced, gamers drooled in anticipation but there were delays including one of a full year after some source code was stolen. Again the developers of Valve have thought a lot and have tried to make another groundbreaking PC game. The graphics are amazing, to say the least, but with the most realistic physics and destructible environments it is sure to amaze. Completely without cutscenes and scripted events this time the story is told more through the actual gameplay. For this a lot of time and energy was put into the NPC facial movements which should become indispensible for telling the story. This time the action takes place in a fictional town in northern Europe called "City 17". You take over the role of Gordon Freeman again and meet some characters from the 1st game along the way.

Counter-Strike, the Half-Life mod turned retail expansion remains, all these years later, still one of the most popular online games around. Before version 1.60, players could personally update the version by themselves. It was originally played online through the WON gaming service, but WON shutdown in 2004, while Valve introduced its own online content delivery system which forced players to switch to Steam. Even disk versions of Half-Life 2 have to be connected online to Steam for registration. Valve has now updated Counter-Strike to use its Source engine which powers the recently released Half-Life 2. Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S) has been released for use by ATI Voucher holders, and in Half-Life 2 bundles available on Steam. Changes include the improvements inherent to the Source engine (such as better graphics and physics) as well as updated models, animations, maps, sounds, and some small gameplay changes. The riot shield introduced in 1.6 is gone and dead players now drop grenades just like other weapons (as was introduced in Condition-Zero). The popular maps, such as de_dust and de_aztec, have the same layouts and size, but are revamped with many aesthetic additions such as glass bottles and 50-gallon drums. |

This is a more direct port of the original classic Half-Life game to the new Source engine than Counter-Strike which additionally was much more revamped. It uses all the old textures and character models - not even the upgraded ones used in Blue Shift. The biggest change is that the game now supports the same physics engine as Half-Life 2 (so bodies tend to bounce around more), and a few other things like upgraded water effects. HL1 Source is available in the Silver and Gold Steam packages when buying Half-Life 2, and in the Collector's Edition retail disc package. With the release of the Source SDK tools for mod-makers, a lot of the original mods can hopefully be ported to the Source engine as well. There are already groups revamping the old HL1 textures and models so an even better graphic port of the all-time classic game should come along someday. |

Wow, this is getting a lot of free publicity in the news....and it's all bad. The release of "JFK Reloaded" is timed to coincide with the 41st anniversary of Kennedy's murder in Dallas and was designed to demonstrate a lone gunman was able to kill the president. Points are awarded or subtracted based on how accurately the shots match the official version of events as documented by the Warren Commission, which investigated Kennedy's assassination. Shooting the image of Kennedy in the right spots in the right sequence adds to the score, while "errors" like shooting first lady Jacqueline Kennedy lead to deductions. Each shot can be replayed in slow motion, and the bullets can be tracked as they travel and pass through Kennedy's digitally recreated body. Players can choose to see blood by pressing a "blood effects" option. Players can view the motorcade from a number of angles, including the perspective of filmmaker Abraham Zapruder and a view from the "grassy knoll" where some conspiracy theorists believe a second gunman was stationed. You can practice shooting all you want then for 10 times you can choose to record your attempts for submission for the $100,000 prize being offered for the closest depiction of real-life incident. Creepy.... |

Universal Combat brings the greatest components of war (land, sea, air and space) together in a single game. Conceived in late 2001 as Battlecruiser Generations, the fifth in the Battlecruiser series, the game has grown into much more than a massive space simulation. It's a game of incomprehensible scale that allows gamers to choose any aspect of combat they wish. In September 2003, Battlecruiser Generations was rebranded as Universal Combat in the interest of a more accessible action oriented approach for this fourteen year old genre spanning series which has grown beyond its typical space sim roots. The "Battlecruiser Powered" game focuses on action based gameplay while maintaining all advanced and exciting elements of previous products before it. It takes you into a seamless universe full of epic space battles, massive ground skirmishes, fierce naval engagements and even tense dogfights above the planet's surface. In solo mode or in multiplayer, in first- or third-person view, play as a marine, a star ship commander with a full crew, or a pilot in the latest space fighter. A massive game world consisting of more than 250 planets, containing more than 21,000 areas of interest (military bases, cities, star bases), 12 different playable races and a database of over 500 combat units, all rendered using high polygon count 3D assets. Virtually limitless game play with a 25 mission single-player campaign, 15 Instant Action Scenarios together with a freeform Roaming mo space/planetary and vehicular dynamics engine is included. An amazing new Terrain PTE-III engine with vegetation, wild/sea life etc. brings the game universe to life. This wildly ambitious simulation however has an almost incomprehensible interface, the absence of a tutorial both in-game and in the poorly organized manual, numerous bugs, and seems to have been rushed to finish and due to the long development time, the graphics are no longer state-of-the-art when the game was finally released. Only for those with lots of patience, there is a lot to experience but too realistic travel time between hot spots leads to tedious stretches.

In response to the growing use of sophisticated digital encryption to conceal potential threats to the national security of the United States, the NSA (National Security Agency) has ushered forth a new dawn of intelligence-gathering techniques. This top-secret initiative is dubbed Third Echelon. Denied to exist by the U.S. government, Third Echelon deploys elite intelligence-gathering units consisting of a lone field operative supported by a remote team. Like a sliver of glass, a Splinter Cell is small, sharp, and nearly invisible. The CIA contacted NSA officials regarding the loss of contact with Agent Alison Madison, a CIA operative monitoring widespread communication shortages plaguing the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. A second operative, Agent Blaustein, was inserted into the Georgian capital T'bilisi to locate Agent Madison, only to drop from contact seven days later. Fearing for the lives of American agents compromised at the hands of a suspected terrorist effort, Third Echelon has activated operative Sam Fisher to locate the missing agents and evaluate the situation. Revolutionary lighting, shadowing, animation, physics, and sound effects create an astonishingly realistic tension-filled experience. Comprehensive stealth techniques including sniping, split jumping, zip lining, rappelling, and using human shields bring gameplay possibilities to a new level. Experimental intelligence gadgets (night/thermal vision goggles, prototype weapons and surveillance gear, etc.) give Fisher the edge against his enemies. |

Rockstar North's first game after Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is billed as an "urban horror" title that has players being hunted for the sole entertainment of a wealthy madman. You are a man unwittingly snatched from death row to participate in a twisted game of survival while gangs with such names as The Smileys, The Hoods, The Skins, and The Innocents are being paid to rub you out. The locales, which include sewers, a prison, shopping mall, factory, junkyard, and more, are all abandoned and in various states of decay. You must carefully stay out of view and make as little sound as possible by kneeling behind trash cans, boxes, and other objects within the environment. You can also peek around corners and throw items such as bricks, glass, and more to distract enemies. An onscreen indicator measures the decibel level of each action players make, and the sound of enemies is also tracked via radar. Players can fight back with handtohand moves, guns, or perform stealth kills using such items as meat cleavers, plastic bags, and hammers to slice, suffocate, and bludgeon enemies. This ultra-violent game has been banned in New Zealand and received the first mandatory restricted to 18 rating in Canada ever. |

Moorhuhn, a German word for "Swamp Chicken" is a series of German games that are extremely popular in Europe, but are little known in English countries. The original Moorhuhnjagd ("Swamp Chicken Hunt") freeware game was created by a German multimedia company called Phenomedia for advertising of Johnny Walker Whiskey. It has inspired many sequels, including the following shooting galleries. Moorhuhn 2 was created in partnership with Computer Channel and with 18 million downloads it turned out to be even more successful than its predecessor. Created for Chip-Online, Moorhuhn Winter Edition takes the Moorhuhn 2 engine and adds a winter setting and even more hidden puzzles and gimmicks. Released in 2003, Moorhuhn X was the first game of the series to be released in multiple versions. XS for free, XL had more content and was distributed in partnership with Bild.de. XXL had all content and was distributed as a software package to various retailers and internet stores. The purpose of these games is very simply to shoot as many of the chickens as possible in the 90 seconds of gameplay. Hidden throughout the games are numerous puzzles and extra features that make them especially addictive. Moorhuhn Wanted takes place in a lawless place called Gun City and it's the first game where the chickens shoot back. Desperado-chickens, guns blazing, drove the sheriff out of the city. You must bring back order and justice. There are four different levels in higher quality graphics than previous games. There's a new feature where you can test your itchy trigger-finger against the ruthless chicken gangsters in the duel-shootout! You can upload your high-scores online also. The XS free version with only the bonus duel level which is however optimal for practicing. The XL version has 1 level and bonus level for a smaller price. XXL has the full 3 levels, bonus level, and extra bonus material. There is no English version of the game but it is fairly simple and fun anyway. |

The hero of Gorky Zero game is called Cole Sullivan, whom some of you may already know from the Gorky 17 (aka Odium) tactical game. The action takes place a few years before the times of Gorky 17 as we participate in one of Sullivan's first missions that is a secret operation in the Ukraine. The action in Gorky Zero will be shown from two cameras. The first type of shots is like an isometric projection so that the hero can survey his surroundings and plan the sabotage. Specific operations like disarming and "neutralising" the enemies, are viewed from behind the hero's back. Cole can very easily lean from round the corners and shoot the guards from a distance without even being noticed. Our true novelty this time is called Silent Kill. This technique enables the hero to kill an enemy with just one blow from even a simplest type of a weapon, provided that he aims well and comes behind the enemy's back completely unnoticed. The hero has a radar device to help him orientate in the field. The radar indicates the positions of all enemies who are relatively close to Sullivan. |

The game follows the exploits of Sarge - who's now an army of one. Players take control of Sarge as he avenges the death of his squad at the hands of the Tan Army. Sarge's War is harder-edged than previous Sarge's Heroes titles and contains more emphasis on combat tactics and fast-paced action. The real-time destruction is outrageous: Sarge with a chunk of his head melted off and another soldier with a hole blown through his chest. You can blast a leg off of a Tan soldier and watch as he hops around trying to kill you. Enemies randomly seek cover and hunt down players using a variety of tactics. The gameplay spans the Army Men world and spills into the real world for combat across kitchen countertops and other gigantic environments. The developers at the now defunct 3DO tossed in diverse authentic military weaponry such as carbine rifle, assault rifles, shotguns, bazookas, sniper rifles, grenades, flamethrowers, time-bombs, mounted machine guns, and more. |

According to his brand new plans, he's heading to Chimera city - the capital of Scrapland. Any central street and any distant corner of Chimera are free to explore by foot or driving a gunship. No one forbids you to take missions from criminals, but it will naturally draw attention of the police to your illegal deeds. So beware! Breathtaking multiplayer battles including Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and other fascinating modes are available.
