Unreal 2: The Awakening Legend Entertainment / Infogrames Entertainment
In Unreal 2 you are policeman John Dalton who has a dull job, because he supervises a dull part of the universe. Nevertheless, there are alien artifacts found there and not only John and the crew of the police ship, but also most different foreign races start to steal the artifacts. The game uses a strong graphic engine, good level design and gorgeous graphics (requiring pretty high power hardware to run). After successful missions you return to the ship and talk to 3 other team members. Also about their past you learn a bit about, but you don't get really attached to them. There also is a little aboard the ship Zutun, where you search for 3 persons and then the next mission starts. The surroundings and enemies are rather different, and its mostly fun on the hellish moon with its alien spiders (reminded me partially of Starship Troopers). However, all together this is nothing much new offered in the level design which is rather simple. Somewhere you must press a button and activate therefore something, blast all the monsters you see. Final bosses have no status bar and also show no damages. You shoot and shoot until all of a sudden they keel over and die. Monolith has shown with NOLF 2 more possibilities of the Lithtech engine than Epic with Unreal 2. Such a highly anticipated game in the popular game series should offer more than only useful or good level design and splendid graphics (at least as I see it). Also the playing time of less than 10 hours probably results from the weak background story.

[top]
After fans received the eagerly awaited Unreal 2 as disappointing in gameplay despite great graphics, this free multiplayer addon comes as great news in much needed additional content. The multiplayer mode is similar to CTF. Each team starts out with 2 artifacts and the first team to capture and possess all four artifacts simultaneously is the winner. You can choose to be 1 of three different classes: ranger, tech, or gunner. Each has its own weapons and items and all have a jetpack to use in combat and to travel across a map. Around the maps are a variety of fixtures, including energy generators, spawn points, vehicle spawns, and manned turrets. These pieces of machinery can be captured and are of great strategic importance. There are eight huge maps in the game, almost all of them are very well designed and fun to play. Bases always have multiple approach points from either a wide landscape or via underground passageways. The 3 vehicles available aren't overpowering and are well balanced by turrets and infantry firepower.

Battlefield 1942 MissionPack 1: The Road to Rome Digital Illusions / Electronic Arts [top]
Road To to Rome replicates battles of the allied campaign in Italy. From Operation Husky (landing in Sicily), up to Monte Cassino and the monastery in the mountains. Road To to Rome functions only in with the original Battlefield 1942. It offers 6 new Maps (also Anzio, Salerno, Santa Croce and operation Baytown), Italian and French allies (who are heard spoken in their respective national language and with subtitles translated), as well as matching weapons and vehicles. Now on the battlefields more possibilities of healing are found, more often medicine boxes are found near important positions and close to ammunition boxes. The crosshair was reworked, now this eases recognizing from hits or misses. The AI was improved all together, nevertheless, is not still flawless. Road To to Rome is a high-class addition to a high-class game, indeed it does not offer altogether a lot of new things, but there wasn't a lot there in the original to improve on anyway.

Legends Dracoynix, Xylex, loop, etc. [top]
Legends is a fast-paced freeware FPS online multiplayer game and is built upon the Torque Gaming Engine from GarageGames that's used also by Tribes 2. The game is designed to take advantage of the beautiful environments available from the Torque engine it is based on while still offering the breakneck pacing and variety of styles available from such classics as Quake and Tribes. Gameplay is not the strafe-strafe-jump-strafe-shoot-strafe-run-like-hell style a lot of games espouse; the addition of a jetpack adds a third dimension of mobility that makes skill, forethought, and restraint necessities to winning. Team sizes are going to be ideal between 10 and 15 on each side, and the network code will allow anyone with any bandwidth to play relatively smoothly. Game type offerings will range from the classic Capture the Flag to our own new type, affectionately called ?Knockout?. Plenty of maps will be provided by us, but the beauty of this game is its customization possibilities. Mission creation has never been easier, with a stable, full-featured editor integrated into the game engine itself. Skins, models, and effects can all be modified by the end-user with commonly available tools. Developed by Tribes fans, it's currently in an open beta but now that Tribes 3 Vengeance is here it may be awhile for further development to take place.

Now there is a Serious Sam double pack. If Sam was already before offered at a low price, all those who have not bought it, can now see how really fun it is to play with both part 1 and 2 available together at a great price. In addition, the gold version offers 20 new single player and 14 multiplayer maps.

Project IGI 2: Covert Strike Innerloop Studios / Codemasters [top]
Project IGI 2 is based actually, like already the first part, on a flight simulation engine. This allows for gigantic, pretty levels under a huge sky, however, also interiors are passable and rather considerable. Only the enemies are not so pretty. In IGI 2 you have to creep to some cover then you have to creep around some more. The levels are relatively straight-forward and do not use the possibilities given by the engine. While you couldn't save a game in the 1st game during a mission, this is now possible (3 times per level). You slip into the role of the British secret agent David Jones. Among the rest of the levels you play in the ice of the tundra and also in hot North African areas. The mission purposes are indicated about the laptop which is connected again with a satellite. There are about 20 missions where you roleplay through light and shadowy areas. With the help of a visibility meter you can estimate how well you are hidden from your opponents. The enemy AI is somewhat lacking and they will do stupid things but their aim is very good. There are also some bugs in the game and it doesn't look as nice as good as more higher profile recent games.

This happens in the usual shooter manner with some puzzles.

Gods & Generals Baric/Maxwell / Activision Value [top]
This is a rare shooter to be set in the American civil war and is based on a rather unsuccessful movie. Accordingly there are weapons from the early 60s years of 19th century. In 9 missions you struggle on both sides of the war front. Among the weapons you can use a saber, revolver, musket (partially with sight telescope) and shells (with which one must destroy frequent cannons). At famous places like "The Wilderness", "Castle Fredricks" and "Bull Run" you will fight in the game, however, realism is not that good. Although the Lithtech Jupiter engine is used, it reminds more rather of games from the year 96 to 98 which were based on the DukeNukem engine (these became later on for 3d graphics maps modified). This offers neither in gameplay, nor in design a contemporary entertainment (apart from the hardware conditions - amusing, how nastily and at the same moment slowly the graphic arts run). While the opponents are fairly reasonably animated, the whole surroundings (trees and shrubs) are noteworthily unprofessional. Also there are some places in which opponents from nowhere seem to appear (for an unlimited period often). As in NOLF or Sniper the play offers light role play elements. One receives points for achieved mission purposes and may distribute to different abilities like weapon contact, armament, life energy and creeping. However, also this no more saves this games. Several problems became evident with the test. More often one gets stuck in trees and can no more escape, except to load only anew. Altogether the best part of Gods and Generals is the game cover. I had been glad about the play, because I knew that one can create nowadays such a game, however, one has to put the blame on third-rate designers and programmers for the result.

Line Of Sight: Vietnam nFusion / Infogrames [top]

Line Of Sight is set in 1968. You play a young soldier, a marksman whose order is to disturb the hostile command structure and to explore the positions of the enemy. The game is a low price product which has succeeded, nevertheless, differently than most genre representatives by all means. It is fun to move in the rain, the darkness or also during a sunny day by the primeval forest. Besides, caution is needed, because many of the enemies are well hidden and very attentive. The missions are eventful and good. Also the play duration (even if high), cannot compare with some full price products. In a total of 12 missions you can be play in single player as well as Coop mode (not tested). This is one of the best games in the low price section which I have tested for a long time. Incomparably better than many other programs. The jungle atmosphere is really effective.

CTU: Marine Sharpshooter (Sniper) Jar Head Games / Groove Games [top]
Topically relevant to today's international situation (or questionably unsuitable or inappropriate depending on your view...), along comes Marine Sharpshooter. You are a member of the Counter Terror Unit (CTU) and your specialty is as a marksman. Behind hostile lines (or in the hostile terrain - because there are clear lines in this form of war only partially) you enter as a sniper. There are 10 missions in 3 locations (Chechnya, Afghanistan and a South-Pacific island). Different precision weapons are used. One must go forward carefully, not banging wildly around. As a marksman you fire 1 or 2 shots and disappear unseen (if you are good and it goes smoothly).

Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield Ubi Soft Montreal, Red Storm / Ubi Soft [top]
After Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear now the 3rd part comes based on Tom Clancy's novels of elite military groups. With Raven Shield it concerns, like already with the predecessors, a tactical shooter. Before the missions one can develop with the help of a tactics screen and suitable maps an application plan. Moreover one selects his comrade-in-armses with the help of their different abilities and then assigns to them in the group certain areas and activities. In the game you can carry out changes also, depending as the situation arises. One can steer each of the figures himself and give to others orders. All together there are some gameplay and graphics improvements compared to previous games. Raven Shield falls back technically on the Unreal 2 engine. What strikes, however, designwise in the central issue with the game figures. The rest of the game has not got just excessively pretty. In the game it goes against a millionenschweren Nazi. Besides, 18 missions lead in different areas on different continents. All together Raven Shield is a good game, however, weaker than Splinter Cell which is likewise based on a Tom Clancy novel.

Delta Force 4: Black Hawk Down NovaLogic [top]

In this fourth game in the Delta Force series, the Somalia intervention by the UN is the focus and is related to the same book & movie's events. Black Hawk Down (a phrase meaning that a Black Hawk (helicopter) was shot down) involves (like the other Delta Force games) interesting and diverse missions. Who saves games often get point deductions. Most missions involve several order points. There are house fights in Mogadishu and other places, however, also fights from outside of town. One fights often on the side of other US soldiers that encounter problems. The game contains very realistic fire and explosion effects, as well as an impressive night view procedure. With the infra-red binoculars moving about in Mogadishu in secret is an impressive feeling. Almost half of the game describes the mission also shown in the film in Mogadishu which became the fiasco. In the end there is one more extra mission which plays some years later.

All together this is clearly the best part the Delta Force series which is able to convey very realistic graphics (with uptodate hardware presumed). Unfortunately, the game is played through rather fast, however, during that time it plays quite well.

Vietcong Pteredon / Illusion Softworks [top]

Vietcong is a tactical shooter, developed by the Czech programming team of Pteredon. In 1967 one becomes sergeant Steve Hawkins who goes to Vietnam and finds himself in an exciting story together with his team members in the jungle. Graphics and sound seem very well designed. The developers flew specially to Vietnam to take thousands of photos and several hours of video. Vehicles such as jeeps and quick boats are used. The team members react rather wisely. As a team leader you have to issue them some assigned tasks, however, they also react independently to situations.

Devastation: Resistance Breeds Revolution Digitalo Studios / Arush, Groove Games [top]

In Devastation you the player are a member of an underground organization in, a totalitarian state. The graphics engine is based on the Unreal technology, though it is not used to its fullest capacity. You are mostly in dilapidated areas roaming around. There are 2 game types: Arcade (a little bit more action, and one can use for an unlimited period all weapons) and Simulation (restricted amount of weapons). Most time you also have teammates. One fights in harbour areas, a psychatric institution (in which you infiltrate) and in an Asian market. There are many weapons with partly cool effects (a high energy weapon which disintegrates opponents (like the vampires in the Blade films)), identifying the origin of the engine clearly. One go and fulfil sub-missions (finding tools, switching ogg apparatuses). Thus there are respawn points (for opponents and allies), which one must switch off. All together however, there is are few surprises. The teammates are not irritating, but also rarely a big help.

The dark story around a totalitarian state doesn't have big quirks, however, it's also not a disposable plot either. Devastation plays well and offers some variety with the 2 play types, however, against other higher-quality games it fails to compete with them.

Postal 2 Running With Scissors / Whiptail Interactive [top]

Postal 2 is no usual 3D-Shooter, because in this game you do not take over the role of a classic hero the usual villains take on. You are "Postal Dude", an embodiment rather of an antihero. His purpose is explained relatively fast: in one week (5 days) survive and accomplish certain goals (buy milk, get your salary check, visit Gary Coleman). This may seem relatively simple sounding if one thinks that the Postal Dude lives in a small, sleepy suburb somewhere in the dusty part of America. However, nothing as expected runs smoothly, if anything can go wrong it does ... The bank is robbed during your visit, the Dude's workplace is stormed by Protestants, etc.

"This game is not to be recommended!" many will probably think of the games Postal or Postal 2 just by a description of them. No kidding, because the games' representation is about the same. Heads are cut off with shovels , people break down after electroshock therapies, urinate and beg around where you live, cats are used as a gun silencers, decapitated heads can be used as a football etc. The game has even more fully perverted imagination and sick humor. However, this is not yet everything, because in the game also appears a lot of groups (Homosexuals, Indians, Arabs) which are made fun of. Especially perverse is the option to touch the button of your trousers to be let down and to urinate. The in-game figures behave mainly realistically, for example: people stand in queue in a bank and talk on the street, or policemen open fire if you don't follow their instructions. Postal 2 uses for graphics Epic's Unreal Warfare engine and it's noticeable. As with Unreal 2 there are nice fire effects and subjects behave physically (almost always) properly. Unfortunately, the level design often leaves a lot to be desired, houses look too unauthentic and repetitive and the loading time between the too small surroundings is still too long. (Review by Enrique-Portuondo Ochoa)

This addon fixes the long load times between different areas in the original single player game plus it adds a few new areas and a couple of new, higher difficulty modes. There are also 4 multiplayer modes now including conventional deathmatch, team deathmatch, and a capture-the-flag variant called "snatch," in which the "flag" is a scantily clad woman who piggyback rides on whomever picks her up. Plus you can throw some bots into a match you host. The urinating and suicide bombs previously available in single player now take on new effects when you're playing with other people, ahem. The 12 multiplayer maps have some fun in them especially the outdoor ones which look good so those who like sick and gross humor can now share it with other players.

Purge Freeform Interactive / Tri Synergy [top]
Purge is based on the 1996 Total Conversion "Future Vs. Fantasy" for Quake. Its purpose was to be be able to create on-line characters which appeal to players more and to maintain a nice play balance at the same time. Purge is based on the Lithtech engine of Monolith. It is a pure on-line play. One can join either the group of the engineers "The Order", or the religious "The Chosen" which were founded by a man called Mabus namely to control the world with the art of the magic. There are four classes for each side: androids, cyborgs, commandos and wastelanders on the Order and mages, fighters, assassins, and monks opposing them on the Chosen. Each player class has seven different attributes which can be tweaked as you like. Additionally, each class has four different weapons and three special skills it can use in combat. Each map features a spawn point for each team called a portal with a certain number of hit points, and its condition affects how quickly a team's members can respawn after dying. The object of the game is to destroy the other team's portal. As players kill enemies and perform other tasks to help their team, such as destroying enemy structures or dropping upgrades for their teammates, they'll gain experience that will eventually allow them to level up and enhance their skills and natural attributes.

Codename Nina: Global Terrorism Strike Force / Nina: Agent Chronicles City Interactive / ValuSoft [top]
Codename Nina comes from the low price specialists of Valusoft. One plays a 1-woman army. You are heavily armed and find yourself at different places all around the world and have to eliminate the terrorists. Nina can pack a lot of heat and unload it, she also has extrasensory abilities and is able to use them on the terrorists to draw valuable information. In 9 missions you are order all over the world to exotic locales such as The Middle East, South America, and Ukraine. The playtime is typically quick shot, the enemies are dumb, but the graphics are not bad.

Red Faction 2 Outrage Games / THQ [top]
5 years after the occurrences in the 1st game in the series, Red Faction 2 starts. The dictator Sopot covers the world with war. You have served for years in the warfront, however, you see the futility of it and change sides. From now on you fight as an explosive expert Alias for the rebellion and with support from 5 other, specialized elite soldiers who owe their abilities to Nano technology. By immense enemy masses you go to field. Red Faction 2 is a Playstation 2 conversion and one tell this in the game, unfortunately, negatively. Designwise it cannot keep up with the competition. If the first part was not already of revolutionary design, the successor is simply disappointing. Part 1 was much nearer to "state-of-the-art" graphics. Also the opponent's masses do not impress much. One fights exclusively against human opponents, however, these are (even if partially with nanotech improvements) mostly stupid in AI. The first class amount of enemies from titles like Serious Sam is also not present. On the one hand, because the opponents look mostly dull, on the other because one expects at least some intelligence with human opponents. The teammates are rather meaningless too. At some places the game achieves a nice mood, however, only for a few moments. Also the level design and the story come up not too good. As in the predecessor, one can also enter vehicles like a helicopter which one cannot steer himself, and submarines (which rescue rather monotonous missions). Only the usable fight suit seemed fun to me. One feels in as in a mini Mech and cleans easily the opponents off the screen. Altogether, nevertheless, Red Faction 2 is disappointing and also is played through rather fast (much faster than the already not very long 1st part). The "improved" Geomod engine (where?) provides no real enrichment once more for the game. For part 3 (should this appear), the developers should considerably revamp to a better engine . If part 1 had found some fans, part 2 will disappoint most.

Robocop Titus Software [top]

Robocop is a Playstation 2 conversion, like with Red Faction 2. Unfortunately, this is for PC standards rather unimpressive. The graphics are weak, the gameplay and story boring. After the Paul Verhoeven Film of the 80s and the good continuation a short time later the Robocop series floundered. The following films and the series could hold no comparison to both first results which were indeed very much brutal, however, with special effects and tension-filled good entertainment. Unfortunately, this trend continues itself with the Robocop game. with dull level after level, no good feeling arises. As Alex Murphy or Robocop one has of course a few advantages as each. If one plays Robocop it's more of an arcade mode than a 3d-Shooter. The game did not appeal to me and thus I can also offer no complete review because I have played through merely 3 levels.

Day Of Defeat Valve / Activision [top]
At first, Day of Defeat was a popular Half-Life mod, indeed in the shadow of the overpowering Counterstrike, nevertheless, it had substantial success and led to a slew of titles featuring real-life past wars. Now the former mod has appeared as a full price title. There are 15 maps, one fights as an allied or armed forces-soldier in the fight. The graphics were overhauled, nevertheless, they can not keep up with topline titles. There are different character classes. The soldiers get tired and there is a health meter always in the field of vision which is absolutely relevant. One can also not use vehicles (indeed now and then one must destroy a tank to reach a mission purpose, however, one cannot drive one). The actions are rather realistic. Best of all, you can stand, kneel or lie. There is also heavy MG's which one must pick up to be able to use them. Some seconds is all the time you need to learn and put them to good use. As opposed to the mod, there are also in two maps English soldiers and also some mission purposes were changed. There are 16 soldiers which are steered about with a special set of key controls. However, one should use the Voice Communication through a Headset, because it is essentially more efficient. Day of Defeat is a good product, however, Battlefield 1942, MOHAA and RTCW are to me more fun.

Planetside Verant Interactive / SCEA, Ubi Soft [top]
Planetside is MMOFPS (Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter), like Battlefield 1942 or Enemy Territory but you have to pay a monthly fee. Different vehicles can be used and there are points of experience. Nevertheless, in contrast to both other games, Planetside needs patience. As a single combatant one has no chance, in a team one is only taken up if one has points of experience, or one collects certificates (mostly experience again in the teams). There are 3 races and 3 continents. You have to to learn the mission purpose. In each case you must access to a building (one hacks a control console) and must hold this during 15 minutes. There are also resources named NTU. The combination of action game and roleplay is not promising, however, the conversion is done well. The graphics are slow and the servers not the most stable ones. Nevertheless, to those who find the points of experience in Enemy Territory too little and who like roleplay and action equally, and have strong hardware as well as a lot of time and patience, they should give Planetside a try.

Planetside Mission Pack: Core Combat Sony Online Ent. [top]
This expansion adds new cavern areas, new weapons, new vehicles, and a new game objective that consists of capturing modules from the caverns that can grant special bonuses to your faction. The caverns are quite large but consist of tight areas that don't allow too much room for vehicles, though they are connected by ziplines, a series of glowing lines that drag any player who is on foot from beginning to end. New weapons include a radiator assault rifle which deals continuous radiation damage to enemies; a maelstrom heavy assault weapon; and the spiker, which is a pistol that deals a small amount of area-of-effect damage on contact. The new vehicles are the router, a short-range two-way teleporter ideal for base defense; the switchblade, a hovering vehicle that can be deployed as a more-damaging stationary turret; and the flail, a powerful long-range artillery vehicle that fires at targets that your teammates "paint" for you. All this new content doesn't make much change to the original combat it just adds a few twists so it's not essential to upgrade.

This was made by teenager Jesse Petrilla whose previous game Quest For Al-Qaeda, made when he was 18, supposedly had 2 million downloads as a freeware game. This is a commercial game where successful game-play is rewarded with comical one-liners and scenes of absurdity - Saddam in a bunker with his doubles, the use of a shoe as a weapon, and Saddam and Osama bin Laden in a hot tub. Settings include palaces, tunnels, bunkers, Middle Eastern landscapes and battle fields, with scenes like the fall of Baghdad and the toppling of the Saddam statue.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Mad Doc Software, Splash Damage / Activision [top]

Enemy Territory was planned at first as a full retail multiplayer addon for Return To Castle Wolfenstein, but later that was scrapped. However, it was decided to release the work completely free of charge as a standalone game. Nevertheless, the originally planned solo missions, in which one plays as B. J. Blazkowicz are absent again. Remaining is a high-class multiplayer game, with different character classes and experience points similar to a roleplay game. One can fight on 6 maps on the side of the Allies or Axis (by an editor enlarged). As character classes there are: 1) soldier (can use heavy weapons like a bazooka or mortar). 2) Medic (can distribute Medipacks and cure injured companions with a syringe which receives later a green color, so that a wounded companion immediately again receives full life energy and not only possibly half). 3) Engineer (can repair vehicles, lay or defuse mines and explosives, make mg nests and mg towers, as well as provide Command Posts which restores the energy bar for special functions (such as repairing airplane attacks or artillery attacks, and mine layings) and therefore is a big tactical advantage towards the opponents. 4) the Field Op (distributes ammunition to his companions, but also with binoculars can order artillery attacks). 5) The Covert Op spy, has the possibility with his explosives (by activating a button) to destroy different equipment within a few seconds, In addition, he can put on the clothes of fallen enemies and creep thus into the midst of their troops and the open doors of enemy places for his companions. In addition, he is to be put out in a position with the binoculars to spy on enemies and to inform his companions where they lie. The experience points (for short, XP) result for killed enemies and explained special abilities. Raised XP permits more ablities such as to take more ammunition, run quicker, more health and more efficient use of the special abilities (therefore a player with a lot of XP should remain with his class, because he must learn the special abilities of other classes from zero). The six maps are diverse and need some days till one has them completely learned, the same also goes for the play system. Novices are sometimes overwhelmed too much by the tactical possibilities and experienced players are lightly irritated if Newbies simply do not follow what they say to be done.

The battles in Enemy Territory are rather small, they barely offer any or restrict usable vehicles. However, the possibility with the points of experience motivates enormously (especially with 6 or more map campaigns), rewards good players for good behavior like distributing ammunition or health to companions or repairing vehicles (more points of experience than just by fragging) and punishes the bad (bumping off your own people gives deductions). All together ET is nowadays my favorite online shooter. The possibility of playing with tactically good players makes for huge game fun.

In this German game, it is 2082 when the world is struck by an unknown extraterrestrial life form. The armed forces have lost within seven months more than five million soldiers. Should we not gain control of the situation immediately, the extraterrestrials will soon control our planet. You are one of the last Android models XR72. As a part of the seventh androids army, you have been sent to eliminate the armed forces of the extraterrestrials in strategic points around the whole world. As soon as we manage to recapture these points, we have the chance to extinguish them. The game features: 3 giants levels, different weapons (Blaster Gun, SGL-021, machinegun, shells), a science fiction soundtrack, several different characters (Mancer, Quetzal, Dashkort, Pipkorg), game fun a la Terminator, 3 chooseable difficulty levels.

Will Rock Saber Interactive / UbiSoft [top]
William Rockwell, an archeologist whose mentor was murdered shoots it up in ancient Greece. Prometheus, a god of the Titans, has moved Will there. Like in Serious Sam, enemies are also hurled at you without rest, until your weapon glows hot. With numerous weapons you defend yourself, such as the Nuclear Atomic Gun or the Medusa Gun which fits well into the scenario. The 10 large levels tend to be darker, less open, and more barren environments than Serious Sam. Though they are less linear they aren't as much fun and there are jumping puzzles too. What's really good are the enemy characters and their animations such as statues that come to life. The multiplayer mode has a standard deathmatch and a team-based deathmatch variant called treasure hunt. You can also play the single player game co-op with up to four other people.

Star Trek - Elite Force 2 Ritual Entertainment / Activision [top]
In Elite Force 2, you will take over the role of Alex Munro again who is a head of the Hazard teams. In contrast to the astonishingly good first part, one becomes in this game stationed no longer on the Voyager, but on the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-E. The first one was built rather linear, this should change in the 2nd part. Activision has changed the developer team. After the first part in which Ravensoft worked, the 2nd part to Ritual came. The engine is that again of Quake 3, nevertheless, it has been developed considerably. It has plenty of story sequences and a good plot with many twists and uses some very nice cutscenese featuring the voices of the tv actors. It involves the discovery of what appears to be an insectlike alien race, which has ravaged a Federation starship as well as a nearby space colony. There are nice boss battles, as well as some sequences where you need to defend certain characters or lead them to safety. You'll also need to use your tricorder to scan for weak walls so you can blast them open, for hidden energy signatures, and for sources of gas leaks. The tricorder also comes into play in some puzzle-solving sequences where Munro needs to hack certain systems. The AI of enemies and your team also is not that good. The levels have numerous hidden areas and secrets which if found will unlock extra multiplayer maps. There are four pretty standard multiplayer modes: deathmatch (holomatch here), team deathmatch, capture the flag, and bomb defusion and they can be played with bots also. Overall this is as successful game as the first Elite Force and is enjoyable to play.

Chaser Cauldron / JoWooD [top]
In 2044 profit-laden mining is pursued on Mars in a big style. From the UN is sent the MARSCORP troops which should provide for peace and order. However, the chairperson of the MARSCORP, Samuel Longwood, gets rich and his greed is what leads to turmoil. You take over the role of Chaser, a man, that aboard the spaceship H.M.S. Majestic without any memories awakes. You are pursued by men who have you in their sights and must try to find out about your past identity. The way leads at first to the Earth where you get involved with the Mafia and Yakuza crime groups, and in the end to Mars. The game was already announced in 2001, but at that time the distributor went into bankruptcy and it became quiet around the project. However, it was picked up for publication by JoWooD so luckily the Slovakian developer Cauldron found a new distributor. The CloakNT Engine is used by Cauldron which was developed already in 2001. The hero has black and white flashbacks into his past and there are nice cutscenes also. This game has almost non-stop exciting action which is very well done. You can even slow the action down in "adrenaline mode" which is like bullet-time in the Matrix films. The enemies are well placed and have AI that's pretty good. Weapons are mostly modern-day pistols and machine guns with only a few futuristic ones. This underrated game has a huge single-player campaign and also standard multiplayer modes as well. It's definitely recommended as a fun play.

The Great Escape Pivotal Games / Sales Curve Interactive (and Gotham) [top]
Based on a famous 60's Steve McQueen film where you are a prisoner of World War II, the game deals with breaking out of the German prison camp and trying to make your way through the German land without getting caught. Loaded with numerous scenes taken from the film and exciting missions, The Great Escape is well able to maintain a gamer's interest. The graphics are not the best, but goode enough. In places you have to hurry through or encounter enemy fights, however most of the time it's better to use a tactical approach and avoid them. Sometimes one must steal papers before one gets a stolen truck so that the controls are known. Other times one must take an enemy's uniform or have a gunfight in an airplane hanger. One takes over different roles that reveals the stories of other war prisoners prior to their capture (at beginning of game) and enabling each one to escape. The AI is not that good but the missions are varied.

Tron 2.0

Monolith / Buena Vista Games [top]
Based on the visually revolutionary Walt Disney Film from the 80s, which was one of the first films to use extensive computer created graphics, appears this PC game Tron 2.0 which is driven by Monolith using its own Lithtech engine. There was supposed to be a film sequel as well but it never got off the ground. The developers have let the look of the internal world of the PC's unchanged, fans of the film will feel "at home" immediately. The surroundings are bathed in neon light, otherwise there are corridors, doors and of course programs which look like persons. There are harmless, useful progams which "can be infected" nevertheless, and then become viruses. There are also Firewall programs which are not indeed really hostile, however fulfill their purpose and do not let pass the player (and add damage if you still attempt to get through). One plays Jet, that tries to destroy the bad guy Thorn who has infected the system and tries to bring it under his control. Tron plays itself like a normal shooter, one runs around and shoots with different weapons at other programs. Nevertheless, one can update the weapons (in 3 steps alpha, beta and gold) and also receive different inventory parts, for better armor, for instance. Like a roleplaying game, all values of Jet improve with the time. There will probably be many "insider" jokes. Otherwise there will be of course the light cycle races known from the film which were found during the last years so often in shareware and freeware games.

Battlefield 1942 MissionPack 2: Secret Weapons Of WW 2 Digital Illusions / Electronic Arts [top]

Secret Weapons Of World War II, is after Road To to Rome already the 2nd addon to the multiplayer shooter Battlefield 1942. This time one changes the run of history a little and gives to the player weapons, drivable vehicles or airplanes which there were not at the time present in the actual war but were being developed. Thus there is a German rocket airplane, the US-mini-jet F-85, an amphibious vehicle, 2 sidecar motorcycles (German and American), but also a sound-subdued submachine gun, and different other weapons for the infantry. Further, tanks and airplanes are also present, as well as a flight command post and a transport plane which serves at the same moment as a mobile spawn point. The branches of service are German and British commandos. The probably most inappropriate new device is the rocket backpack (which has played to this day no role in warlike disputes). It's fun to use but fits in the least in the serious Battlefield design. Designwise it has not changed a lot, the maps are rather big furthermore and there is more fun to be had with a larger amount of troops. Altogether this is a very good addon.

In Jedi Knight 3 you begin as a Jedi pupil Jaden Korr who is trying to avoid the entrance examination to the Jedi Academy. On the way to the Academy, the shuttle crashes and you must go along with the apprentice's colleague Rosh through the jungle of Avin. Here all kinds of Stormtroopers also roam around, so you can test out your new lightsword under fight conditions. Altogether there is more emphasis laid on lightsword duels which were also improved again from previous games. In these duels one fights in third-person view, whereas normal weapons are like the Wookie crossbow, marksman's gun and others are fought in the first-person perspective. On your way to the Academy, being a young pupil, your teacher Kyle Katarn will steer you by instructions sent to you during your adventures. Soon you must also for the Academy be sent on various missions. You will meet Chewbacca and also Boba Fett, and on Tauntauns and Speederbikes will encounter action. Also you must defend yourself against a lot of enemies. The power abilities have been developed, new abilities - running along walls among them. There are numerous puzzles to solve. You can choose a male or female character and select different colors for the lightswords. Also different clothes are available. The levels are very big again and for me I hope that they are more logical and more interesting than in the predecessors.

You take over the role of a bounty hunter who has been betrayed and framed by his partner. You flee and are eventually hired by a small mining company which sends you on missions like recovering stolen equipment and rescuing hostages. You soon meet a female who becomes your new partner. Rival companies and meeting your former partner cause you many problems. Weapons are the standard pistols, submachine guns, heavy rifles, and even a rocket launcher but your inventory space will let you only carry a few at a time including other items like ammo and health kits you pick up along the way. There are vastly different difficulty levels with the easier ones allowing you to see a proximity radar while the harder ones can be quite tough without this aid. The missions are quite varied and fun with a few vehicles you can drive like dune buggy-like cars and mechanized walkers as well as the use of cloaking devices. You also have seven implants that enhance some of your abilities like improving your accuracy, hardening your skin or giving you extra speed. The graphics are very good looking and huge levels take place on tropical islands, dense forests, and frozen landscapes. Unfortunately the enemy AI is not that great and the standard multiplayer modes only have a few maps each. It is worth playing for the interesting single player experience.

Mace Griffin Bounty Hunter Warthog / Vivendi [top]
After the colonisation of the universe there arose also a crime element increasing by leaps and bounds in it. The titled hero Mace Griffin belongs to the rangers which clean up the universe. Unfortunately you get into an ambush and the police troops are extinguished except for Mace. Mace Griffin is deemed responsible and put in prison as there is no one alive who can defend his actions. 10 years later there are no longer ranger troops and to earn money (and to exact his revenge) the player becomes a bounty hunter. He follows his job mostly in spaceship hulls though there are mining colonies and space temples also. 10 weapons are available to Mace on foot, and 7 in the different spaceships. It has a rather dull play with some partially sluggish controls. The opponent's AI ranges between crazy to reasonable. The graphics are not state-of-the-art but acceptable and sound is ok. There is no category in which the game exceeds any of the more popular PC titles (it was released on consoles one year prior to the PC) and is probably only suitable for such players who have already played those better games and are in need of something new.

This expansion has three single player missions over 12 new levels which take place in North Africa, Sicily, and mainland Italy. There are a few intense battles like in an African sand storm, protecting a minesweeper, and the final castle at Monte Cassino but most are similar to ones in the original game. There are also nine new multiplayer maps and a new multiplayer mode called liberation where dead players are put in a jail with no weapons. Soldiers on your team can come and rescue you from jail. Once you step out of the jail zone, you are given back your weapons. There is the occasional questionable enemy A.I. and the difficulty levels on easy are too easy and on hard are impossible.

Halo: Combat Evolved

Gearbox / Microsoft [top]
In 2552 the engineering development of humanity has far progressed. The planet Reach forms the technology center for people in this time. There a supersoldier is developed who is soon also required because the Covenant, an extraterrestrial race, have attacked people. Plans to destroy the home world of the Covenant in a big counterblow, however, is preempted the planet Reach is destroyed as well as most supersoldiers. Only one ship of the people survives with one supersoldier aboard. Nevertheless, this ship the Covenant are likewise tracking down near the artificial planet Halo, and a battle ensues. At first one must struggle from the spaceship to a rescue capsule; afterwards the fight on Halo begins. Because the people have been defeated in number and also technically, they must use (near the supersoldier whom the player takes over) guerrilla warfare tactics. Most time one is in teams and vehicles need mostly more than one person, one to steer mostly, while the AI companions shoot. The vehicle models are very detailed technically, as well as from driving physics. The AI of the companions offers a good team-feeling. Also the other computer controlled teams when fighting sometimes by mistake hit the player's team and apologize, and they turn back angrily if the player meets sometimes one of his own people too. The enemies behave differently too. There are cowardly kinds and also courageous bent on death at all costs. The graphics were designed some years ago for the X-BOX where the game became the most popular title, but in the meantime on the PC others have rivaled it. The competitor Breed which likewise relies a lot on its vehicular warfare is similar. The eagerly awaited state-of-the-art titles are considered to be Half-Life 2 and Doom 3. Halo will have to nibble at the PC audience during the long waiting period for the Halo 2 sequel to make a bigger impact with PC fans. Game development is so quick now that a publisher cannot afford to wait a year for a conversion from consoles to arrive (which might be reduced with XBox 2 being more like a PC). While Halo on the XBox was a huge success, it will barely make an impact on the PC.

Nosferatu: The Wrath Of Malachi

Idol FX / iGames [top]
Idol FX is a Swedish developer firm which provides principally Xbox games. However, this PC game is an atmospheric horror FPS. Set in 1912 in a castle in the Carpathians, a wedding is about to take place between the sister of the protagonist and the count Malachi. Rebecca and the family Patterson are already in the castle when the latecomer and protagonist James Patterson arrives. However, the count is a vampire and has imprisoned the family (spread in different areas of the whole castle). Now it is a matter of releasing them from their evil clutchesn and to bring them to a consecrated chamber at the entrance to the castle where some some helpful equipment from her suitcases can be produced. There is a cup which one can fill with holy water, garlic, different drinks which bring more speed, stamina or life for 6 minutes. The game is effective in its horror elements. The music is eventful and atmospheric; the graphics are state-of-the-art, but it is not also free from problems. They use intentionally coarse textures and generate with the scanty light in the castle a mood like in the old black-and-white horror films of the 30s. This is underlined by some cutscenes which were inspired quite unambiguously by these films, even if Max Murnau's Nosferatu (classic silent film from the early 20s) the real foundation-stone of the game it might be. As weapons: a sword, revolver, old pistols and guns, wooden stakes (only for vampires suitably), a cross, submachine gun and a cup which one can fill with holy water to splash the opponents with it. As an opponent there are farmers (with old pistol, gun or scythe), dogs, Zombies, Ghouls, rats (only rarely) and of course vampires (which although one comes shortly after 22 o'clock and is it night, mostly in their coffins are sleeping). To rescue the members of the family (and lead them for an irritating time back to the consecrated chamber at the entrance) one must look principally for keys. Also, the castle is newly regenerated at the start of the game (some important points remain the same), amounts of things like opponents vary with every loading process. The regeneration does not change the game so much that one could not recognize the elements easily. But thereby it is not possible to tell a real story. The found members always ask the same vague questions. Maybe it would be better to remove the variations and to tell one story more intensely... Nosferatu is therefore certainly a shooter not in the top ranks, but the horror elements are well done and more numerous than with Undying. Whoever likes horror games should play this in any case, the playing time amounts to only 5-6 hours.

You play an ex-Marshal called "Stranger" who wants to buy only one piece of land for himself and aims at a quiet life but on the train in he encounters attacking bandits. You shoot all the bandits and are invited by a lady for a cup of tea in her house. The house is attacked again by more bandits and the lady kidnapped. Thus you set off and pursue the villains. The graphics are not bad, but not state-of-the-art because the outdated LithTech Talon-engine is used. One has several weapons to use in the game: simple and double Colts, shotgun, Winchester, small cannon and TNT.

The game is fun for the time it lasts but the gameplay duration is, however as with all ValueSoft/GrooveGames/JarHead games simply too short! (Rev by: Ghostbuster)

Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior Kuju Entertainment / THQ [top]
This seemed like a great idea to bring an FPS game based on the cult which has grown up around Games Workshop's combat miniatures franchise over the past two decades. As it involves the gritty 41st century universe "where there is only war" with opposing sides like the Imperium, Dark Eldar, Orks, and Necrons. But it turns out to be a cheap PS2 port of a poor bare-bones game. The story though unexpected in that instead of playing the usual Imperium space marine, has you take the role of Kais, a Tau warrior who takes on the Imperium. There is not much plot though - you are thrown into action right away spend a lot of time going through corridors and looking for keys. Thre are 21 fairly large levels (around 15 hours of play which is good) but they are very linear. The weapons are puny and not very accurate in hitting enemies. The AI is pretty bad also and the graphics are very dingy and dull. There are some nice cutscenes and dialogue though.

In Hidden and Dangerous 2 you are active with a special team again behind hostile lines. Judge Dredd Vs. Judge Death Rebellion Software / NDA Productions [top]
Judge Dredd is a popular English comic book figure and was made into a film in the 90's with Sylvester Stallone rather weakly. Now the Judges have created it also on the PC, in the form of a 3d shooter. There is both a story and arcade mode. In the story procedure, it is a matter of linear action around dark Judges - who are following orders from the villain Judge Death. However, there are also other enemies such as zombies and vampires. The Judge can not only rule on the guilt of his enemies, but can also arrest them, and also straight away serve out any punishment. Criminals are either shot or if they kneel they can be arrested. The atmosphere of the town is fully brought to the game, even if the graphics are rather mediocre. The controls were found to me a little bit spongy. In the arcade mode there are single missions with which, for example, you can go up against zombies and survive or to mix together various enemies in a gang war. However, Judge Dredd with his first excursion on the PC doesn't really stand out against other better movie adaptations, but it clearly is stronger than for instance the recent Robocop. One can risk a look.

A majority of the team which created Medal Of Honor also is responsible for building Call Of Duty. Even more impressively, it is laid on the accurate depiction of war events. Players are in teams during the game and teamwork is of extreme importance. There are no one man armies, only in the group one has a chance. In 24 missions one will fight as a British, American or Russian soldier. There are tactical missions, such as attack scenarios and also fights using vehicles. The graphics and the in-the-middle-of-a-battle feeling should still be much better, as with Medal Of Honor.

XIII Ubi Soft [top]

XIII is striking like Tron 2.0 at first because of its different graphics. It uses cel-shaded visuals similar to comic book art. The Unreal engine draws pretty surroundings, the figures are similar to comics with bold borders. Also in the game there are comic-type additions over and over again. Thus one sometimes "hears" enemies, or this is indicated optically by speech bubbles and "Tak tak" the step noises. Also, speech bubbles like "Aargh!" and other similar ones make this an unusual shooter. Also interesting is that this scenario is based on a Belgian comic series. Thus it is really a conversion rather than faithful to the original work. The story itself trades off the fact that one is suspected of having murdered the president. However, one can remember nothing and must try to understand what the actual events were. Nevertheless, you are not without help from others. Sometimes one receives tips, on radio, from people who seem to know more. Sometimes one also fights together with others against the enemies. The game did not sell particularly well and much was made of the millions spent on its development. It definitely is a change from the usual FPS games though.

Terminator 3:War Of The Machines
Clever's Software Development / Atari
[top]
It would be nice to have a good modern 3D game that used The Terminator storyline from the popular sci-fi films, but this fails miserably. There are two factions - the sentient machines, known as Skynet, and the humans, who are called Tech-Com. Each side has a small handful of classes that include basic roles, like snipers and heavy weapons specialists. Skynet also has infiltrators (machine spies who look like humans), a tank, and small hovercraft that's armed with lasers and missiles. The Tech-Com side has a dune buggy with a machine gun mount, burned-out car with a rocket launcher mount, and armored personnel carriers with laser cannons and ....the player with the highest frag count can choose to respawn as The Terminator. There are 12 badly designed maps with dead ends, shoddy network code, and no online community support. The graphics are dull - when a player is killed they fall over like a tree being cut.

Deus Ex 2: Invisible War ION Storm / Eidos [top]
Invisible War takes place about 20 years after Deus Ex. The war of the Secret Services is over, and now the simple problems rule again (water, food shortage and environmental pollution). Designwise, the graphics look state-of-the-art. This time the game surroundings are more dynamic. For instance, NPC's react differently to the player (depending on if you play as a man or woman). However, this seems to become secondary, even if it sounds interesting. In the foreground the story stands out again and the abilities of the character with various implants, thus offering a role play aspect in developing certain abilitis. Again one will be in different countries along the way, this time in the USA (Seattle), Egypt (Cairo) and Germany (Trier). The designers also put a lot of emphasis on sound - not scripted scenes but each time you play at any point a sound may give your presence away to enemies (similar to Thief 3). Also the opponents AI should reach unexpected levels. After part 1 was such a surprise hit and the possibilities of the engine have been developed, I think with Deus Ex Invisible War there will be held a lot of potential. Warren Spector has always got the ability to create a brilliant game. I am already eager to play as Alex Denton (a clone of J.C. To investigate Denton from part 1) and investigate this world.

The game's character is controlled from 3rd-person view and one can examine the hero from every side while performing all necessary actions. This facilitates a sequence of tasks in some regard, however, it also shows a realism deficit. For the players who not only want to shoot, but also think Splinter Cell is absolutely recommended. Various tools facilitate Sam's work. Thus it is possible behind closed doors to hide, before opening it and surprising an enemy and to avoid night vision and infrared devices is standard. Custom traps can be laid, and be defused also. In some levels you have to creep solely, no enemies may notice you or you will be killed. This is thereby complicated (in a dictator state) that one barely has the means and also the information (although it concerns an American commander) to construct and follow the mission purposes in Chinese or other hostile areas. This is irritating and leads to frustrating moments. Splinter Cell is still fun to me, however a first-person perspective (because of the raised realism) would have been more appealing to me rather. The behind-view does not bring clear advantages in my opinion. In the style of Thief this game would have been even better.

Gun Metal
Yeti Studios / ZOO Digital Group / Strategy First
[top]
This is a simple arcade-like anime-style mech 3rd person shooter where you stomp through a debris-strewn battlefield in a giant robot, launching missiles at everything that moves. You can also transform into a fighter jet and perform barrel rolls to escape missile locks. Your mission goals are mainly kill and defend, gather ammo, and keep your finger on the fire button and aim at the bad guys through similar levels (in day and night modes). The best point of the game is the excellent graphics with reflective surfaces, cloud shadows, and extremely detailed landscapes. The destruction of terrain is nice too like when trees burst into flames when stepped on by your mech. The simplistic and repetitive gameplay though gets dull after awhile. The game was eventually released in 2005 in North America.

eXtinction, Nick Naster's
CGS Software / Merscom / Most Wanted Games / SR-71
[top]
Not many 3D platform shooters are created (Duke Nukem Manhattan Project being one) but this is one. The entire galaxy is threatened by a virus epidemic, which transforms humans into alien controlled mutants. This worst case scenario is called eXtinction. But there is hope. Some scientists developed a vaccine. But the world where it was developed is now completely under the control of the mutants. That is the part where you, or better say Commander Nick Naster, pilot and special agent of the Earth Forces gets involved. Since he is immune to the epidemic, he's the ideal candidate for infiltrating this alien controlled world and salvaging the vaccine. eXtinction is a classic 2D platform game in a 3D environment (characters, enemies, the look of the level itself). You are controlling Nick Naster, or one of the four other heroes you can choose from, moving him through six different zones, each with 5 levels. Since the game itself is only 2D, you can only move left or right. Nick (and the others) can't even jump, but that's not necessary, since he is carrying a rocketpack, so you can fly. In order to go through these levels, you must find your mission objectives (levers, computer terminals, etc. ) and activate them, to get to them, you must find keycards, which will open the colored energy barriers. On your way to them, you encounter self-firing cannons, mines, and, of course, lots of bad guys, who want kill you (including a boss at the end of each zone). So, kill them first with your 9 different weapons, partly futuristic and non-futuristic, like the Uzi, Machine gun, Bio Cannon, Magman Launcher, Photon Launcher, and other. In each level are Power-Ups, which will help you through that level. These are: Health, Energy Packs (for your Rocketpack), Regeneration (regenerates both health and energy), Damage Amplifier, and Slow Motion (reducing game speed by 50%). The game has detailed animations, advanced particle and lighting effects.

Metal Gear Solid 2:Substance Konami [top]
Konami sends the player as Snake for the second time onto the PC. With Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, it's an XBox game which is again an enlarged version of the Playstation 2 version. Once more you must play as a secret agent Snake Metal Gear. It concerns, on this occasion, very modern weapons. The graphics are mostly rather done with loving detail and also the sound is quite well done too. Unfortunately, the control is rather insufficient, as a direct XBox conversion, for the PC player (mouse support is absent). There Splinter Cell offers clearly a better option. Also the camera perspectives vary and provide those not console-experienced players some confusion. Whoever ignores these problems and has already played Splinter Celll, can find some pleasure in this game too. Even if it can't keep up with topline PC games, it offers good atmosphere, great cutscenes and a varied arsenal.

Indiana Jones And The Emperor's Tomb
The Collective / LucasArts Entertainment
[top]
This is a fun action adventure that takes place in 1935 and puts our hero Indiana Jones from the popular film series on a quest to recover a Chinese artifact known as the heart of the dragon - a black pearl with the power to control minds. Nazis and Chinese gang members are also after it and you travel to places like Prague, Istanbul, Hong Kong, and an island fortress. As you solve various puzzles an icon will appear on items where you can use your whip, knife or dynamite and activate levers. The combat is fun whether in hand-to-hand punches, kicks, and grabs or using your whip, a variety of firearms and makeshift weapons like chairs.

Bandits: Phoenix Rising
GRIN / PAN Vision / Tri Synergy
[top]
Bandits is a game like Mad Max in the future where your cannon mounted combat car takes you on an adventure across green fields, desert canyons and deep snow, bombing and blasting all sorts of enemies and cargo trucks, defending your gang and your glory. In charge of the action are the notorious leaders of the Wolfpack gang, Fennec and Rewdalf. You take control of the action while Fennec & Rewdalf do the talking - they do a lot of that. When you join the action you will be in for over 22 missions ranging from car duels, train robberies and storming of trade outposts to battling it out with hordes of enemies with only your trusted cannons and grenade launchers for companions. There's offensive driving from points A to B, the running defense of friendly vehicles, racing, and the occasional oddball surprise mission, such as one in which you man a stationary turret. Most of the missions start at a screen where you can choose a chassis (light, medium, or heavy) and then stock it with a variety of weapons. Every vehicle's primary gun is a rotating turret that can fire in all directions.

Savage: The Battle For Newerth
S2 Games / iGames
[top]
This is unique as it combines Real-Time Strategy and multiplayer First Person Shooters in the same team-based game. It's hard to learn at first because there's no offline or tutorial levels available, everything is online only. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic green Earth where humans only have limited weaponry and their rivals are ape-like beasts who can use magic. Two players serve as the commanders of their respective sides and oversee the action from a bird's-eye view and have at their fingertips an RTS interface. They must gather resources, build new structures, research new weapons and abilities, set up base defenses, expand into new regions, and coordinate a crushing attack against the enemy. The commander may select any player on his side, as though that player were a unit, and order them to attack a certain target, proceed to a certain point, repair or build a certain structure, and so on. This player, meanwhile, receives verbal orders and a path to follow but has free-roaming action. If orders are followed the commander can reward players by giving them gold, promoting them to officer status, or granting them various other benefits; if they aren't followed then their side is at risk of losing the overall battle. The troops switch between a third-person (for close-range melee weapons) and a first-person perspective (for far-range shooting weaponry). Each side has a total of five units - three progressively stronger fighters and two siege units. The graphics are pretty good and the game is fun but it depends on if your teammates and especially the commander know what they're doing..

BloodRayne
Terminal Reality / Majesco
[top]
In this violent action horror game you play BloodRayne, a half- human half-vampire, who is trained to hunt supernatural evil. She is out to hunt down an evil Nazi vampire and has gymnastic moves in combat that can even rip off limbs. She can use her wrist blades or firearms like chainguns or bazookas. She can also suck the blood of her enemies which give her additional powers but she is vulnerable to water. The makers of other scary games like Nocturne and Blair Witch Project are using a really great looking new game engine too with real-time shadow effects, good character animations and spooky outdoor areas as well as cool looking Victorian style houses. The game also has a great bullet-time effect and almost every object in the game is destructible. The story is not as interesting as in some other games but overall it's fun playing and great to look at for horror fans.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Rockstar North / Rockstar Games,Take 2 [top]
As in the predecessor GTA 3, Vice city also offers a complete town, with a lot of different quarters, passers-by, vehicles (car, from the family wagon, up to stretch limousines, from the convertible up to the garbage truck; motorcycles of the Vespa up to the Chopper, helicopter, boats and airplanes) and above all else a lot of criminals. Vice City is a Playstation 2 conversion, but incomparably stronger than this year's disappointing conversions of Robocop and Red Faction 2. Vice City comes along in the style of Miami Vice and contains of course also again many good songs from this time. You play Tommy Vercetti, freshly from jail released and by the drug business soon taken in. From a nobody, one must work your way up upwards. Quickly, however, one persuades his different bosses and rises in the hierarchy. One can buy different apartments or houses in the town for yourself (not at all insignificant, because one must store things in them). In comparison to the predevious game, almost everything remains similar, only improved. The graphics are more refined, there are more cars and weapons available and also the control was reworked. As in the predecessor there are no "real" vehicle names. The cars look like models, only the names are changed. The game remains fun though. Again there are numerous locations and a lot to explore. Before you can push ahead to the end of the game, you must enter yourself into the film industry (porn business) and have bumped off numerous criminals. Whoever liked GTA 3, they will completely without question also have fun with Vice City. If you couldn't get the hang of GTA then nothing in this game will change your opinion because there are not any real improvements in this game.

Enter The Matrix Atari / Shiny Entertainment [top]
In the hype around the Matrix films (2 and 3, as well as the Animatrix), the game Enter The Matrix also takes place. It is developed by Shiny Entertainment which presented high-quality games in the past like MDK and its continuation, as well as Messiah and Sacrifice which were, nevertheless, all no big success. Enter The Matrix is further explains the events in the final 2 Matrix films: however, some of the events in Matrix Reloaded take place at the same time. You take over the role of Ghost or Niobe who also both appear in the film. Depending on which of the roles you take over, the possibilities differ. As Ghost, you have much stronger weapons at your disposal, while Niobe possesses more quickness and skill. You are supported in each case by the Operator Sparks who discusses mission plans and informs you of any changes. However, the graphics offered are somewhat a disappointment and never rise to the excellence of better games (apart from some very successful animations of the game figures). The camera work (the game is played in third-person view from behind), does not follow everybody smoothly. Also the same level design and the tasks recur (in variations) often. The opponents (police forces, agents and more), offer no special intelligence. The story is told in video sequences which were filmed in parallel to the film with the original actors (the 2-figure budget can thus be explained also). The bullet time is also integrated, allowing super jumps and special-moves. Altogether Enter The matrix is a disappointment (and for me also the second film). The budget has flowed very much into the cutscenes and a lot of it is simplistic (compared to the film). Indeed the game shot to number 1 on the sales charts, but quickly sunk and provides proof that Shiny has lost its status as a top developer. Even cucumbers can sell well with the right marketing.

Tomb Raider 6: The Angel Of Darkness Core Design / Eidos Interactive [top]
After a long wait for this next installment in the popular game series with its heroine Lara Croft and in the meantime Angelina Jolie played her in 2 movie versions, the resulting game came as a disappointment to fans. Lara is accused of murdering her former mentor in Paris and has to solve the mystery and clear her name. During a few sequences you will play as Kurtis Trent, a fellow adventurer Lara meets, and the game becomes more like a survival horror game. The interesting darker story with occult elements, well-done voices and music are actually quite good but the controls are frustrating and have irritating glitches. At particular moments when Lara pushes boxes, climbs, makes big jumps, and performs other such physical feats, she'll comment that she's gotten stronger - this will enable her to leap slightly farther, kick open previously locked doors, and more. Though this game looks much better graphically it is a resource hog and there are yet more glitches here too...it seems as if the game was rushed before all the errors were fixed.

State Of Emergency VIS entertainment / Rockstar Games / Global Star Software [top]
This is an urban riot game set in the near future, where the oppressive Corporation has declared a State of Emergency. Corporation authorities are clamping down on organized resistance and restricting movement across the City to counter the spread of revolt. It is up to you to smash up everything and everyone in order to destabilize the Corporation. Use any item available to begin fighting, including pipes, bricks and benches - even dismembered body parts. This is the first game ever to let you participate in relentless street combat with over 100 people on screen at once! State of Emergency is a game for those who have always wondered what it's like to be armed and dangerous in a city gone out of control. In SoE, you can choose from one of five different characters; Spanky, an ex-gang member; McNeil, a disgruntled ex-cop; Bull, a criminal in prison; Libra, a lawyer; and Phreak, an orphan. You can even use street furniture, such as boxes, construction cones, benches, signposts, trashcans, and more. Freedom Fighters
IO Interactive / Electronic Arts
[top]
This is a great third person action shooter that blends squad-based tactics with a good story. It offers an alternate history where the USSR became the most powerful nation after World War II and now rules over the US as well. It was made by the same people as Hitman 2 and has the same good physics and AI. You play a plumber who becomes a resistance leader and as you complete more missions you are able to recruit more team members to help you out. The environments are graphically impressive and highly detailed and controlling your teammates is not too difficult as in more realistic games like the Tom Clancy ones. Your soldiers have unlimited ammo, different weapons, and they can be resurrected as long as you have a spare health pack to use on them. The game could have been longer but is very worth playing nevertheless.

There are 60 different missions. Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne
Remedy Entertainment
[top]

In this successor to the noisy action of Max Payne, the story will be even darker and become more realistic. The graphics are like the original, like thousands of photographs again exceedingly realistic. Max has learned some new moves, the bullet time remains like in the first game and is a major part of the game. This time it becomes a dark love story. Max gets in the clutches of a femme fatale who confesses to a murder. The game is told again in flashbacks. No game has used bullet time as successfully as Max Payne even up to this point so one can only hope that Remedy Entertainment succeeds as well with this 2nd part.

Apocalyptica
Extreme FX / Konami
[top]
This mediocre game offers battles between mechanised warrior saints and demons. You can choose between 16 lead characters as well as spells, melee weapons and guns. However, the combat element is weak because swordplay is sluggish and limited by too few moves, and ranged warfare frustrates with a showing of fairly ordinary pistols. There are some nice varied missions but your bot teammates don't have good AI. There are some standard multiplayer modes too. The graphics are good but there's not much else worth playing this unless you were desperate to play a nun with a gun.

Curse: The Eye Of Isis
Asylum Entertainment / DreamCatcher
[top]
This is a good survival horror clone of Resident Evil crossed with Egyptian themes and mummies instead of zombies. It involves a statue called the Eye of Isis in a museum in Britain, thiefs and occult happenings. You go from investigating the museum to the London sewers to a train station to a cargo ship headed to Egypt and finally a pyramid. The puzzle elements are all quite easy. The graphics in this though are good including locales, character animations and some nice monsters, and sustain a scary atmosphere. There are a few glitches in gameplay but overall the decent story rounds out a nice game worth playing.

Silent Hill 3
KCET / Konami
[top]
The third game in the popular survival horror series continues to create really scary atmosphere in the middle of disorienting story. This time the lead character is a teenage girl who is questioned by a detective in the mall where she works about her birth. She wants to avoid him and sneaks out but then finds the mall totally empty and a monster eating a corpse. Other areas such as an office building and sanitarium that look ordinary when visited again turn into nightmarish dark and creepy run-down scenes. When you encounter creatures, you can run like mad, distract them, or fight them off with a knife, lead pipe, shotgun, or other weapon. The great graphics and eerie sounds all contribute to making this a great scary game for those who aren't too shocked by gory scenes.

Worms 3D
Team 17 / Sega Entertainment / Acclaim
[top]
This is the first 3D Game in the popular Worms series of strategy games and continues the fun gameplay. It combines strategy and 3d shooter elements in that you control a small team of worms and use a wide range of weapons to dispose of an opposing team. During your turn, you control one of your worms. You can inch around the landscape, use jump and backflip moves to get past smaller obstacles, or use special gear such as the ninja rope or the jetpack to access harder-to-reach spots, but there's also a timer in place so don't dawdle. Once you're where you want to be, you can choose a weapon with which to inflict damage on your opponent. The numerous weapons range from conventional : bazookas, grenades, shotguns, land mines, and Uzis to the weird stuff like the exploding sheep, the Street Fighter II-style dragon punch, and the agreeably chaotic banana bomb. You have to also take factors like the wind direction, fall damage, and the blast radius of different explosions coming into play. Judging the trajectory of your projectile weapons is also tougher in 3D but on the other hand knocking worms into the water to their deaths is an easier tactic as the 3d islands are surrounded by water on all sides. In single player, there's a campaign mode where you need to meet objectives inlcuding picking up items, a challenge mode where you must show your skill in using a jetpack or shooting, and a quick start mode also that just puts you in the middle of the action. In multiplayer, up to four teams of worms can play in a round-robin game, and the variables you can tweak are numerous which makes for good replay value. The levels you'll do battle on include a spooky graveyard, a re-creation of King Kong climbing the Empire State Building, and the moon. The graphics are pretty simple and nicely cartoony. There are 40 different voice themes that you can assign your worms too.

Dead To Rights
Bitmap Brothers / HIP Interactive
[top]
This game, which most resembles Max Payne, is like an action-packed film where you play a K-9 cop who investigates the murder of someone close to him and goes out to seek revenge. The story is interesting and has some nice twists. In addition to the bullet-time shooting action there are also some nice mini games like disarming bombs, lifting weights and picking locks. Your character is also a martial arts expert, and can disarm enemies at close range by snatching their weapons while delivering a deathblow with dramatic flair. He can also put a vice grip on someone and use them as a human shield while retaining the ability to shoot. You can call on your dog to attack any time you want also. Through 12 interesting chapters this game offers solid action with nice graphics, sound and story.

Armed And Dangerous
Planet Moon Studios / LucasArts
[top]
From the makers of Giants:Citizen Kabuto comes another good-looking solid shooter with humor thrown in. You play the leader of a four-member group of thieves that also includes a Scottish moleman named Jonesy, a British robot named Q, and a stinky, little blind mystic named Rexus. They are on a quest to steal the all-powerful Book of Rule from an evil king. There are varied missions where you have a jetpack, and some stationary turrets, and you can order your teammates in some missions. There are various weapons including a very handy machine gun, and a crazy land shark launcher, which causes a shark to "swim" under the ground's surface before attacking enemy soldiers from below. There are some weird secondary weapons too like a portable black hole, a traitor bomb (which makes enemies attack each other) and a weapon that lets you turn the entire world upside down for a few seconds, causing enemies to fall into the sky while you hang on to a corkscrew that's been drilled into the earth. There are hundreds of enemies in the more than 20 levels which can get tiresome but mostly the fun story and decent graphics make this a winner.
