What's happening to Facebook?

Posted by urbantheory at 05:06 PM on June 02, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Facebook seems to have already begun the steady decline as newer social networks begin to take over.

Much like Myspace before it and Xanga before that, Facebook appears to have slowed. Again another social network does not survive. Very few do. What on earth does it take for these websites to stay on top?

It would seem more lasting networking websites have a more visual element to them, like myspace's customizable profile features, Neopets (yes, it's a social network) nifty pet feature, IMVU's 3d environment, DeviantArt's linking of worldwide artists and writers, or GaiaOnline's avatars and running storyline.

Though Facebooks layout changes would have been a push in a good direction, often, websites should be wary of the dreaded layout change. I've seen quite a few of these in my few years with SNs, and they don't always, or even often go over great. Facebook tried this, most people I've heard from hated last year's change, and hate the most recent one as well.

Why do these websites die?

As one generation of teens discovers a website, they begin to flood it. However, I think I can say that some appeal is lost once parents and over-30's begin to take over, also, with time, the initial group of teens grows older, this tends to lessen a website's appeal to a younger generation, yes?

And with this, slowly, the website just pines away. Remember Xanga? Not if you're under 16 you don't.

5 years from now: Remember Facebook?

Nope.

Men: Why Shouldn't you be like Edward Cullen?

Posted by urbantheory at 04:36 PM on April 12, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Lately, I've heard the usual 'My girlfriend dumped me because I'm not like Edward Cullen.' And I think of all the lonely men there would be if women only took men like Edward Cullen. A lot amiright?

It's VERY important for men and women to understand this: Edward Cullen is not only fictional, but he shows signs of being a terrible relationship partner, and is not even as deep as the sparkles on his skin. If your girlfriend dumped you for the sole reason of you not being like this guy, she was a bad catch anyways.

Twilight fans will say, 'you haven't read the book, you don't understand' or, 'you don't know romance.'

Well, I havent read past the middle of the second book, but I've read everything before. And if you think Bella and Edward's "relationship" is so romantic and qualifies as love, tell me what they have in common, why they are attracted to each other, (OTHER than looks/smell of blood) and what would keep them together if Edward lost his looks and Bella no longer had blood that smells like a field of roses, poppies, and unicorns that bleed rainbows. I certainly don't think Edward's 'I only need myself, you shouldn't be with me' personality would go well with Bella's damsel in distress, submissive and needy personality.

But why is Edward a bad example for men, and why would a man like Edward be a bad partner for women?

I found a little site that may be able to answer that.

http://www.a2zgorge.info/prevention/abuser_warning-signs.htm

This website does a good job of pointing out the warning behaviors of an ABUSIVE PARTNER.

One such warning sign listed is: He/she is jealous and doesn't like you talking to others of the opposite sex, or people he/she perceives that you might have a sexual or romantic interest in.

In the fiction world, this type of trait may not be dangerous, and may seem cute to the twilight reader, but this is a sign of someone who is likely to be an abusive partner. You may notice that Edward gets angry when Jason approaches Bella somewhere near the end (If I'm right) of Twilight.

Another?: He/she drives too fast or does other dangerous things which scare you.

Sounds a lot like Edward seeing as he drives like a freaking maniac and seems to do a lot of dangerous thing to try to scare Bella or things that make her uncomfortable. This also may seem cute to the Twilight reader, but no matter how safe he keeps her when he puts her in these situations, he is still endangering her.

Yet another?: Doesn't give you space - phones a lot, treats your body as if it's their property

Sounds quite a bit like Mr. Watches-Bella-Sleep-and-Follows-Her, doesn't it? Bella does not seem to even have her own life under Edward.

Wanting your man to be like someone else is the wrong reason to love him. What makes love beautiful is that every love is different, not like Edward/Bella's.

Bella-types are also probably not good partners. Bella is submissive, seems to have as much personality as the wooden desk I'm typing on and is only about as deep and unique as her situation with her parents. It gives her a little depth, but not what she needs to be a compelling character.

Both Edward and Bella are made up to be flawless, and that's a very uninteresting type of love.

I don't know everything about love, but I'm pretty sure that Edward and Bella are doin' it wrong.

Europe

Posted by urbantheory at 01:56 PM on April 11, 2009 Comments comments (0)

So I recently (last night) returned from the UK. I took a trip with a few peers and a techer to France and England. (Britain/England/Great Britian/UK... pretty sure they're all the same country) I had a pretty awesome time. It's vastly different in Europe. I got to see probably hundreds of plants that I had never seen before and all the architecture is the old 1700s (or earlier) architecture.

It was such a great experience. I've always wanted to live outside the U.S. once I finished college and I think I've found a few possible places. ;)

My favorite part was the smaller towns of stratsbourg, Kent, and Canterbury. I adored seeing the english countryside. There's gardens and sheep and old houses with thatched roofs all over there. I would love to live in a town like that. There's a very at home feel, the people are generally pretty kind. Their accents are awesome, when you go to buy something or ask something they'll often go, 'What would you like, love?' British english is very charming. big grin

Our tour guide was AMAZING. He works as a tour guide and works with Care highway, a non religiously based group that helps in Africa and puts all donation money into hiring locals to build shelters, and schools, and feeding children and curing the sick. Imagine this, in Kenya, there's a shelter built by this group, and we all know about the riots in Kenya last year. Well, when the people were going out to burn down many buildings, they were told by the leaders that they could burn whatever they wanted, but they could NOT burn the care highway shelter.

But back to the tourguide, he works his job directing tours so that he doen't need a salary from care highway. He knows a whole bunch of travel secrets and is really good wth getting around.

The big cities, London and Paris are SOOOO crowded, Paris more than London, but it's still pretty awesome there. I got to see so much in the 7 days there. I saw the Louvre, Versailles, Notre dame d'Paris, Westminster abbey, Anne Hathaway's (shakespeare's wife) house and Shakespeare's house, the cliffs of dover and the secret war tunnels inside them, dover castle, windsor castle, etc. SO MUCH! I wish I had time to describe it all!

However, as I haven't the time, I'll post as many of my pictures as possible instead.

For those who have redirected from my facebook/deviantart page, this is the more technical side of my journey.

You can find my more personal journey on my Deviantart (sunrikaiya.deviantart.com) or on my facebook if you're a friend.

Also, if you'd like to help care highway, which you definitely should If you plan on helping feed and school kids in Africa go to www.carehighway.org. I'll make another post some other time about the organization.

Rihanna pic

Posted by urbantheory at 01:48 PM on April 11, 2009 Comments comments (0)

So as you may know by now, the Rihanna picture was a fake. It is a rendition of a much earlier picture of her, altered to reflect her described injuries. Also, I remember hearing talk about the tattoo in the picture being on the wrong side, but I don't know about that. I still think its a shame she went back to him. This is the cycle that many women who end up dying (murder by abuser) go through with domestic abuse. Its sad but authorities expected it to happen.

Hope she realizes that she doesn't have to live like this before she gets too old.

Back together?

Posted by urbantheory at 10:59 AM on March 02, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Well, it appears that Chris Brown and Rihanna have gotten back together, which is pretty unfortunate. I find that men usually think they can get away with certain things and then just apologize and make things better if you don't immediately show them that that isn't how it works. I've heard that he's been abusing her the whole time. And she went back to him. I think she's more or less subjecting herself to even more abuse in the future, but that's what celebrities do and I rejoice that I don't live the sorts of lifestyles that they do.

Boobs, boobs, boobs!

Posted by urbantheory at 10:06 PM on February 22, 2009 Comments comments (0)

So a while ago Sheyla Hershey, Brazilian boobs bombshell, had her what, tenth boob job? This make her boobs some of the biggest around, and she has so much silicon in her that she can no longer get silicon implants in the U.S. Her current size is triple k and the shin of her chest is incredibly thin, so it is more than life threatening if she gets another boob job since they could literally pop. I don't think I can post a picture (I don't wanna get in trouble) but here is her website. Here

Hmm, if I were a guy, I would be terrified of suffocating on those things.
