Went to jamaica in 99.to visit Bob Marleys house, and couldnt believe my luck, when Yellowman was playing in the pub across the road..Had a good chat with him before the gig..

Yellowman overcame two major obstacles: he became popular with his music despite being an albino, and he became as highly recognized in Jamaica as Bob Marley, who popularized reggae in the first place during the 1960s and 1970s. During the early 1980s, Yellowman had over 40 singles and sometimes produced five albums in one year.

BELMONT CINEMA,ABERDEEN APRIL 2001

Reggae star Jimmy Cliff is the principal reason that the cult classic The Harder They Come was one of the first truly successful films to come out of Jamaica. Cliff plays a young would-be singer who finds the going rough when he hits the big city of Kingston. Jailed for participating in a knife fight, Cliff is exploited by a dishonest record-company executive upon his release.

Turning his back on the establishment, Cliff becomes involved in the marijuana
trade. He keeps the police at arm's length by offering them a slice of the action, but ultimately finds himself in the middle of a bloody raid. Cliff kills several cops and escapes, whereupon the duplicitous record exec releases Cliff's single "The Harder They Come" The film resulted in an incredible upsurge in the popularity of Reggae music in America. Triptych is incredibly proud to present The Harder They Come with an extremely rare appearance by Jimmy Cliff himself, talking about the film afterwards.

LEMON TREE ABERDEEN 2-5-04

The legendary best dressed chicken in town was in town indeed (for a rare scottish date)..sang all the classics, but only along to a dj playing vibes..would like to see him play with a full band..

Dr Alimantado, born Winston Thompson, also known as The Ital Surgeon (Kingston, 1952-) is a Jamaican reggae singer, DJ and producer.

He started to record very young under various names (Prince Winston, Winston Cool or Youth Winston). He mainly met success in the mid to late 1970s, with his best known album being Best Dressed Chicken in Town (1978), a Greensleeves Records collection of tracks recorded in the mid-70s, featuring Alimantado toasting over singers such as Gregory Isaacs, Jackie Edwards and Horace Andy. Alimantado became popular with punk rockers in the '70s following Johnny Rotten praising him in an interview. He was mentioned in The Clash song Rudie Can't Fail in the line "Like the doctor who was born for a purpose".

Toots is one of the true architects of reggae - so much so that "Do the Reggay," a 1968 single by Toots and his group, the Maytals, is credited with giving the genre its name. Classic songs written and recorded by Toots and the Maytals have been covered by the likes of the Clash and the Specials, and the group was featured in reggae's greatest breakthrough event - "The Harder They Come," the 1972 film that became an international sensation.

This was a great nite for ska music in skaberdeen only problem the skatalites and the selector on in different venues but on at the same time.. so it was decision that had to be made, skatalites came out on top, but ran up to drummonds to see some of the selector too..

created in the mid 50,s by fusing boogie-woogie,r&b,jazz,carribean,and african rhythms, ska became the first truly jamaican music..1964 saw the formation of the skatalites... these guys have been on the go since the 60,s and still play for over two hours.. awesome, skanking nite including hits,guns of navarone,pheonix city..

what can u say about these two tone legends, still belting out the classics with pauline black only thing i would say is that when i ran up to see them only caught 3 songs as they only did just over an hour.. boo.

THE SELECTOR @ CAFE DRUMMONDS ABERDEEN 13-10-06

Met Nick Welsh during the day in a record shop, and we got chatting and said would see them at nite...Went to drummonds at nite, but it was a very small crowd but the band played real well..singing a lot of classics...

THE TUNNELS ABERDEEN 23-12-05

THIS GIG WAS 2 DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS, SO EVERYONE WAS IN A FESTIVE SPIRIT, MET BUSTER BEFORE GIG AND ASKED IF IT WAS OK TO TAKE PHOTOS, HE SAID YEAH ,TAKE AS MANY AS U WANT AND SEEL THEM ON EBAY   THIS MAN HAS THE BIGGEST TONGUE IN ROCK..

A LEANER BUSTER TOOK TO THE STAGE + BELTED OUT CLASSICS LIKE LIP UP FATTY,CAN-CAN,LORRAINE,SPECIAL BREW..GREAT NITE HAD BY ALL..

SKAVILLE UK

In a change of the original line up Skaville UK came on first with their fourth ever gig. They were fronted by Nick Welsh, an original member of Bad Banners and who is currently with Selecter. They played as a 4 piece band and kicked things off nicely with Skaville UK as an intro, followed by Sally Brown (and a nice dedication to yours truly!). They played a good number of crowd pleasers like My Girl Lollipop, Monkey Man, and the Can Can and people were enjoying what they heard. The band played well together and the only downside was that the set only lasted an hour. Hopefully we will get to see more of them when they get more gigs under their belts.

BOMBSKARE

Bombskare were as tight as ever when they came on. The great ten piece band from Edinburgh squeezed onto the stage and got people bouncing straight away. Not even the tropical heat stopped people from dancing along to Yellow Pages, 54 46 Was My Number, Crime Of The Century and Force Ten From Naverone, amongst other favourites, not forgetting their great rendition of Inspector Gadget.

  

Both bands made it a fantastic evening and everyone had big grins on their faces

THE TUNNELS ABERDEEN 17-03-06

Although he has one of the most distinctive voices in reggae music and had a lot of coverage in the 90's following his collaboration with Massive Attack on their albums Blue Lines, Protection and Mezzanine, he is still only followed by hard-core fans and probably not as well known outside Jamaica as Burning Spear, Culture, or Toots + the Maytals...

So I set off to see this legendary reggae artist at the Tunnels in Aberdeen. I had been told that he played the previous night to over a 1000 people in Norwich. The Tunnels only has a max. capacity of 230 so the atmosphere was quite intimate but chilled and everyone was up for it. Horace Andy was backed up by the Blood and Fire DJ who spinned tunes for him whilst he sang hits from all through his career including tracks from Studio 21. He did such songs as Skylarking, Fever and Love Of A Woman, along with the classic Massive Attack tracks like Spying Glass. He smiled his way through the set and played up to the crowd who were loving it. This was reggae at its best, a must see for all fans, a true living reggae legend.

This is what music is about, when u see something really special... fooking awesome... +  it was a true honour to meet him.

CAFE DRUMMONDS + THE TUNNELS

well here we go... not much of a writer so ...

the guys were doing there 1st ever gig. this 8 peice band started of with echo 42,nite klub, 3 minute hero (full set list in pics). drummonds was quite full, lot more than i had expected, and everyone was dancing there socks off.. if this is the shape of things to come they will be doing a lot more gigs....they can only get better + better...

when they were finished i asked people what they thought, no bad comments some even said it was the best version of echo 42 they had heard..

pros and cons

PROS..
good to have a new ska band on the scene
saw some of the old crowd + lots of more new fans

CONS
couple of the songs, i thought were off key but might have been there own versions..
singer needs to face the crowd more(thought he turned his back too often)


remember this my thought s...
overall great nite.

will they take the pork pie crown off THIS R TWO TONE .. on this 1st gig no.. but if they get a few more gigs under there belt, they will definatley be contenders..

Since writing that 1st review have seen the guys on 4 occasions and they are getting better all the time.

CAFE DRUMMONDS 21-10-06

AKA-SKA came on first before BOMBSKARE and played for about an hour, playing some new songs "reward" + "geno". they are getting better + better all the time. the lads from bombskare watched and were quite impressed  andy +scotty watching aka-ska  me and colin + scotty

they got was what a very good crowd going and  i myself had a blast..

The Harringtons came on just after 9.30 & played 12 songs starting with
there own stuff then a few covers i even managed to get up on stage with ali to lets skank
This was a gig that they really enjoyed & its great ive managed to get them under the sdc umberella & good both bands could meet each other.
for the 1st time 

   


This r came on & did a simular set to the bongo but this was a hard 1 as we were all still done in by night before.but as usual they got thru it perfectly they even got the harrs davie & danny up for monkey man
a chosen few managed to get up on stage for a few balloon kicks me ali

The power rich has when they do message to you is pure showman getting everyone to sit on the ground & he has a wee lie down total entertainment.His mad moment of the night was when he tryed to throw his water bottle out & it hit mrs skaliwag on the heid
but in good heather style she took it in her stride

We had a we fright at the end as andy asked me where ali was nobody seemed to know so we were all a bit worried & started a search team but in true ali
style he was up in the changing room relaxing our worry was over.

After a great bit of madness chaos & banter in the changing rooms with both bands we headed home on oor nutty bus thanx to dod who told us where to find a SKAbab take any turning of union street so we did & got 1
The bus back was top class for 1st hour then a few lightweights went to sleep leaving myself toadie & cal to have a very inteligent conversation
in fact we must have played the worst game ever trying to quess the next song that was coming on the radio then trying to guess each others postcodes the things you do once youve had a few dry sherrys
but it made the journey pass.
Davie had a hard drive as the fog came down at times you could only see 5 yards in front well done matey

I got back home @ 5.15 & i felt like i had ran 3 marathons
davie almost had to pour me out the bus.

I want to say a big thank you to all who made this a very memorable
weekend.
