Glastonbury 2007
We left
We had the mahoosive trek to our campsite (always the worst bit of Glasto!) and were very happy to find Abby and make camp. We were in the ‘usual’ spot, right opposite the main stage in Row Mead. We spent the first day getting our bearings, meeting friends, helping to pitch tents and wondering around site. The festival seemed pretty full even by the end of the first day. It was nice to walk around looking at stalls and finding where things were before it all kicked off, and of course sampling the pear cider.
Thursday was similar but there was a bit more going on. We walked pretty much all over the festival visiting the sacred space (with the Banksy loo-henge), market places, dance area, green fields etc. It was nice to see all the random things going on.
In the evening the music was starting to kick in, and we went to see an anti slavery night in the Leftfield arena. We saw Don Letts DJing, Pama International, and then the Beat. All very good as usual! Afterwards we met up with some friends and headed off to check out
Friday started off with us heading to the circus area and checking out the cabaret tent, which was an excellent place to shelter from the odd showers. We saw Big Beats (formerly Weapons of Sound) kick things off and we sat there most of the afternoon. It was rounded up by the strangely coveted Attila that Stockbroker, and of course the fantastic John Otway. He was brilliant and totally on form!

The mud had taken a firm hold by this time which made walking around very good exercise. We headed over to see the Steven Frost Impro Allstars (Phil Jupitus, Richard Vranch, Steven Frost and a lady). That was like Who’s Line Is It Anyway and utterly hilarious! In the evening we watched Kasabian play on the main stage from our camp and then saw a bit of a very boring Bjork on the other stage.

We decided to check out the Park, a new area of the festival which was pretty much the other side of the site from our camp. It was incredibly muddy when we got there but we saw spiritualized playing whilst we queued for the observation tower which was nice. The tower view was ok but being the middle of the night all we could see was lights, the view must have been astounding in the day time.
Saturday we started off with Seasick Steve on the main stage and then headed to the circus area again. We saw random cabaret acts like a brilliant Twisted Cabaret by the Canadian juggler Frank Olivier, and John Ottway yet again. In the afternoon we saw Lily Allen with Terry Hall and Linval Golding of the Specials whilst getting ready to head to Lost Vagueness.

We were all dressed up and a bunch of us headed to the craziness of the Lost Vagueness field. We were preparing to see Madness, knowing that the field would get full up hours before they were due on. Whilst we waited for the gig we saw a wedding in the chapel which was pretty amusing. The crowds were soon behind us but we’d staked out our front row place. The atmosphere was amazing and everyone was really excited about seeing Madness play in such a small tent (max 2000 people). When they finally came on the tent erupted, and the whole place was jumping and singing along. Suggs came out with a wig on and kicked off with One Step Beyond. Their whole set was classic after classic, and even though it was a big squash, nothing ruined the great joy we felt at being there. The guys were joined by Linval Golding of the Specials too. It truly was one of the best gigs we’ve ever been to!

As the gig ended someone announced that the specials were about to play further along the field so we rushed off to have a look. We should have known better as instead of the Specials it was the Beat came one. They were excellent, but we felt sorry for them as people shouted out for the Specials instead. After that we headed back over to

We woke on Sunday and after the usual hunt for food we went to see the Marley Brothers play Exodus on the main stage. It was lovely to hear those songs being played by a Marley, very relaxing! We then went to the Leftfield tent where Neville Staple of the Specials was playing and it was a great but short set (only 30minutes) but we shouted out the Specials songs and he played them..

We spent much of the afternoon bimbling, before heading back to camp to spend the rest of the night watching the main stage. It was nice to see bands play and be under the shelter of our gazebo. We saw the end of the Manics, then the Kaiser Chiefs who were great, then the Who, who were also great.

We made the (bad) choice to go and see Bill Bailey but it was raining so much and so crowded that we didn’t stick around. It was a wet ending to the festival. As we packed up on Monday morning it was still raining, which didn’t make the hours we spent standing waiting for our coach very fun. But we got to
A great festival, lots of fun, and yes it was muddy but not as muddy as previous years. Roll on next year!!
