The UPS chapter of Democracy Matters is active in many events related to awareness raising and informing the public about the benefits of clean elections. On this page, you will find photos and other materials related to what we've done.

Panel Discussion on IRV & Elections Reform

At: UPS, Wyatt Hall

For the month of March, UPSDM, along with the CSoc, Politics & Government, and CS departments, sponsored a panel discussion of Instant Runoff Voting, proportional representation, and other issues related to elections system reform in the United States. The event was quite successful, and will no doubt lead to good things in the future.

2005 Annual CTAC Summit

At: WSC Rotunda at UPS

Students involved in Democracy Matters, and other social/political action clubs hosted a large, and very successful event at the end of Febuary to raise awareness and to engage the UPS and Tacoma communities. Cool clubs and hot bands made this event one of the best so far!

DM West Coast Summit

At: The University of California at Berkeley

Students involved in Democracy Matters convened on UC Berkeley to share ideas and experiences. The opportunity to see what other states are doing to change politics helped many clubs, including our own. Students also participated in rallies and canvassing, not only for Democracy Matters, but also Measure H. The hands on work of helping the Measure H movement, a movement for fully publicly funded elections for the city of Berkeley, provided students with the opportunity to see reform in action.

UPDATE (11/05/04): Although this city proposition did not pass, it did receive over 40% of the vote (a majority was needed). However, it is clear that thousands of local voters realize the importance of clean elections. Congratulations to all who helped get the word out about this important piece of legislation!

"Rocking for Democracy" Rally

At: The University of Puget Sound, Trimble Forum

The UPS chapter of Democracy Matters (UPSDM) got together some civically minded musicians, slam poets, and actors for a night of politics, art, and live entertainment. Several clubs came to talk about the issues, and artists helped encourage students to vote. There isn't a better way to spend a Friday night!
