University of Portsmouth Athletics Club

Competitive Events

The University of Portsmouth Athletics Club attends regular events throughout the year, these include national and regional track and field championships against universities or clubs, cross country meetings, road races and team relays. In addition to athletics events the club has also participated in the University's dodgeball intramural competition and has raised funds for Children in Need by running up the stairs of the Spinnaker Tower.

The number of events and particpation in the Club has increased year after year and to continue this we are open to suggestions of any new or exisitng events.  

The Club now provides a schedule of events available found on the Calendar page but the captains will also notify the team of upcoming events.

BUCS Outdoor Championships

To be held during 2nd - 4th of May 2009 at Bedford

The BUCS Outdoor Championships, offers athletes from our University the opportunity to test themselves against some of Britain's best athletes from other higher education institutes. The competition is intense and it is a great spectacle to witness at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium. The stadium has great athletes including Paula Radcliffe who visit regularly and use the facilities that include an indoor warm-up area and one of the best track surfaces in England.

BUCS Indoor Championships

To be held during 14th - 15th March 2009 at Sheffield

The BUCS Indoor Championships is an opportunity for competitors to show their mettle before enetering the outdoor season and is attended by many of the Nation's top young athletes before going into the outdoor season. The indoor arena gives a great atmosphere with over 2,000 people and displays from some of the best in athletics including European Indoor silver medalist Craig Pickering, Ryan Scott and Simeon Williamson who have all competed for Great Britain. The indoor athletics event occurs as part of the British University Championships so there is also great range of sport and high quality athletes on show.  

BUCS Cross Country

The BUCS Cross Country sees a mass of athletes take to undulating and often muddy course in a challenge requiring much strength and endurance. For those who have encountered cross country before will know finishing is hugely satisfying no matter what the elements throw at you.

Hampshire Championships

Location: The Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth

The Hampshire Championships take place every year at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth, giving members a chance to take part in competition against Hampshire's other athletes.

Hampshire Cross Country League

These are five meetings held on Saturdays at different venues around the county.

Hyde Park Relays

Like cross-country? Like London? This race is for you! The Hyde Park Relays gives the team a chance to get away to London before the BUSA championships begin and offers a relay race around the Serpentine in Hyde Park giving runners an opportunity to sample some of the sights and sounds of London both during the day and the night out 

Chichester Corporate Challenge

This is a team race comprised of three fixture races of 4.3k around the town of Chichester

Teddy Hall Relays

Location: Oxford

Another Relay Race that is ideal for cross-country runners and those who just fancy a day out. A race through the historic streets and parks of Oxford, finishing at the exact spot where Roger Bannister became the first person to break the 4 minute mile. A bit of fun and sense of history making for a great day out!

Great South Run

The Great South Run is a 10 mile race held on the roads of Portsmouth, which is held in October each year.

Road Races

Have previously included Gosport Half Marathon, Victory 5, Winchester 10k, Promenade 5k Series and D-Day 10K

Sodbury Slog

The Sodbury Slog is one of our first events away from Portsmouth, taking place in the town of Chipping Sodbury near Bath. This is certainly one race to experience as it is an experience in itself! A 9.5 mile race through bogs, mires, ditches, fields, roads, farm-yards...basically anything and everything the countryside can throw at you! Finishing the race is a challenge in itself but feels so good when you finally cross that line! A definate race for cross-country enthusiasts and a fun challenge to enter for everyone else!
