The most important thing to remember about winter is keeping warm, which requires a fire. Frostbite, which may happen if you stay in the cold too long, also requires a fire
to heal properly. To keep from getting frostbite, stay next to a source of heat until you
are told "you are sweating a lot", and come back to a heat source when you are told "you
feel a bit cold".

You can eat snow to reduce your thirst, but game is scarce in the Winter and
there are no growing edibles to be found, so what is a hungry character to do? Well, if you
have time before winter, build a Cellar (shovel+pit+6 slender tree trunks+20 rocks) and
stock it with Bags of Rye-Flour (for cooking Porridge in a stove during the winter; make
sure you have an Empty Pot. Don't cook Flat Rye Bread - it doesnt feed you much unless you
have Roasted meats and Water to make Meat dishes with), cooked Meat and Fish, Breads, Soups
and Drinks (again, make sure to get an Empty Pot), and raw Fruits and Berries and Vegetables
and Mushrooms. The Cellar will keep your food a long time, especially raw Fruits and
Vegetables and Mushrooms, and especially when the temperature drops well below the
"freezing" line on your Thermometer. Alternatively, if the temperature is below "freezing",
you can just drop your food in the snow (away from stoves and fires) to keep it fresh.
However, as soon as the temperature approaches the line again, your food will begin to
spoil, so having a Cellar is still the best option.
Now, if you begin the game in Winter,
the obvious options involve finding food however you can. Food can usually be found in
Villages for trade. You can also cut a hole in ice (use Survival) in order to get water,
or to do some fishing, but the hole will refreeze quickly if it is cold enough. However
(possibly due to a bug or oversight) you can use a net to fish in a hole in the ice, and
leave it there even AFTER the hole re-freezes, though you still have to wait a week or so to
have a chance of catching anything, so you'd better have some other food to last you that
long. One of the fastest ways to get food is to trade a Village member for an animal (say
"animals" while talking to them) and either milk it every day for your food (if it is a
Sheep or a Cattle; Milk quenches your thirst AND feeds you) or slaughter it (if it is a
Bull; I wouldn't recommend trying to kill a Dog in the Winter, even if it IS cheaper). If
you kill an animal in a Village, and it is not on your leash, the Villagers may become
angry. Likewise, any of your un-leashed animals that see you kill another of your un-leashed
animals may become angry. Trying to kill an animal on a leash is VERY dangerous, so take
your animals one at a time into an uncultivated area, build a Fence around them, un-leash
them, and slaughter them there. A Maul works great for slaughtering animals, when you hit
them in the head... I tend to keep one around for just this purpose. Many "uncouth" methods
of keeping fed in the Winter - including stealing food, and murder and cannibalism - also
exist, but only "uncouth" characters would ever pursue them.

The best materials to wear to protect from the cold are: Fur and Wool
(Yellow), followed by Iron and Linen and Nettle (Lt.Orange), followed by Mail and Ring and
Leather (Orange), followed by Birch Bark (Red). With less Warmth protection you will go from
"sweating" to "cold" faster, and your less-protected body parts will get frostbitten faster
and worse, in cold weather. To keep the cold out as long as possible, try to layer armor for
Green Warmth protection all over. Here is a chart showing the exact protective value of the
generic Clothing found in the game, as well as the protective value of the different kinds of Fur
and Leather that can be made from animal hides:
Many different pieces of armor that protect the same areas
can be worn at the same time. One piece of "generic" Fur or Leather armor, and any number of
the same piece of armor made out of different types of animal skins, can also be worn at the
same time. For instance: You could wear a "Fur Cap", a "Fur Cap (Lynx)", and a "Fur Cap
(Wolf)" at the same time (IF you can kill lynxes and wolves, that is).

Applying Skis and Wielding a Ski Stick will allow you to Ski, greatly
decreasing the terrible fatigue caused by walking in the snow, and increasing your Mobility,
sometimes to over 100%! Both can be made (Skis: axe+cutting weapon+2 slender tree trunks+
fur, Ski Stick: cutting weapon+staff+tying equipment).
Get or make these items as soon as
possible, especially if you start in the winter... the people of URW may also have them
during the cold months, so you may be able to trade for them.
