Upper Middles Water at Greenfield Center School

A 5th and 6th Grade Class

WELCOME TO UPPER MIDDLES WATER!

Greetings!  We are a 5th and 6th grade multiage classroom located at the Greenfield Center School (www.centerschool.net) in Greenfield, Massachusetts.  Our school is a K-8 independent laboratory school that uses names to create group cohesion for each class.  For example, the youngest students are called "Primes," the middle-aged elementary students are "Middles," and the oldest students are called "Uppers."  Since we are somewhere between the Middles and Upper, we came to be called "Upper Middles."

You might wonder, what does the name Upper Middles Water mean?  At Greenfield Center School, there are two 5th and 6th grade classes.  Inspired by our thematic focus on Ecology, we differentiate between the classes by using the names "Wind" and "Water."  When we do things together, we sometimes call ourselves "Waves,"  even though waves are caused by more than just wind and water.

HISTORY OF THE WEBSITE

Please enjoy our website started by students and teachers in December, 2006.  The idea came about after a few students learned to build websites for their Eco Fair project, an exhibition of learning that culminated our Fall Ecology unit (see Projects page).  Here is what they have to say about that:

I am Enzo, a fifth-grade student in UM Water.  I made a website on global warming, waste reduction, energy conservation and fuel economy. I made this site by myself and did all my own research.  I also have a page of links in case you still have more questions after reading what I have.  Visit my website to learn more.

Hi this is Henry and Jamie also in Upper Middles Water.  We have created a site using Freewebs and made it about Local Foods, Fuel Economy, and Pollution.  It was fun and challenging at the same time because we had to find the sites to take information from and then we had to edit it.  Click here to check it out.

The Biome Project

This is the Biome Mural that hangs in our classroom.  (Click here for larger photo).  This masterpiece was created by UM Water students as a final project for our Ecology unit in school year 2005-2006.  It is over 8 feet long and 4 feet wide.  Each panel represents a different biome.

From the Top Left moving right:  Taiga by Addie and Tes; Desert by Sonja, Rozee, and Jake; Grasslands by Ethan, Adina, and Saki; Tundra by Sam, Oona, and Paul;

From the Bottom Left moving right: Pond by Joe and Ezra; Rainforest by Zane, Emily P, and Azure; Coral Reef by Emily T., Kara, and Coko; Ocean by Evan, Marisol, and others.
