Attending: Dan Vetere, Ryan Avery, Lindsey Hoffman, Jason Dowgiewicz, Joe
Gikis, Marc Mimmo, Steve Hicks, Nate Salamore, James Poro, Matt Sterns
Discussions:
1.) Sending 8-10 students to California to participate in the Turf Bowl and
Represent the UMass/Stockbridge Turf Program
- Estimated cost for the minimum of 8 students would be about $5600 for
airfare and accommodations
- A goal of $10,000 has unofficially been set in order to engage two teams of
4 students in the Turf Bowl
2.) Fundraising ideas for California trip:
-Football Tailgate
- Sell burgers, hotdogs, drinks and possibly raffle tickets outside one
of the afternoon football games
- Nate is going to talk to the athletic director and find out if any
permits or permission is necessary from the school in order to do such
an activity
-Ideas for raffle tickets ranged from lawn care to a Turf Club collared shirt
- Only problem with lawn care would be getting a truck and/or equipment
-Par 3 fundraiser at the Joe Troll tournament at Westchester C.C. New York
-Sell raffle tickets on the par 3's for a little prize for closet to the pin
-Raffle tickets would most likely range from $5-$10.
- Steve will email Steve Curry and see if this would be possible
-Citrus box
- Each student will have a chance to sell boxes of citrus from a company in
Florida
- Estimated profit per box sold is $11
- Must sell the fruit in advance and deliver the fruit ourselves
- Usually will take place around Thanksgiving
- Contact Martha Baker from NRE and inquire if we can do anything for the NRE
auction
- Maybe offer our services for lawn care or other services for a denotation
from NRE
- Offering our expertise and services for winterizing clients lawns
- sending emails out to Plant and Soil Science facility
- Offer free soil tests. From the soil tests set-up up a fertilizing/liming
program to obtain optimum turfgrass quality in the future
- Dr. Ebdon has the equipment necessary to provide such a service
- Members will set up a price to receive such donations for services
- Work on setting up emails to different Turf companies to see if they will
donate money to the club
- Examples would be Turf links, Lesco, TPC, etc.
Goals
Recruiting freshman into the club in order to keep it going when senior
officers move on
- Our main goal aside from going to California to compete in the Turf Bowl
is
bringing the UMass name back into the industry
- Talk to freshman students about the business, internships and help them
perform at these internships to their highest ability possible
- Many of the current members have worked at big courses and if we can get
freshman into these big courses they have a chance to put UMass back on the
map
- Let them know about future possibilities like attending the national show
in the future, field trips to different events ( Joe Troll, Fenway)
- Offer them speakers from the business, (superintendents, sport
superintendents, salesmen from companies)
- Offer them assistance in their school work, give them tips and help with
their current school work.
