The Fifth Generation

The Fifth Generation began in 1989 and ended in 1994. This generation included the Sega Genesis, Turbo Grafx 16, Nintendo Gameboy, Atari Lynx, Sega Game Gear, NEC Turbo Express, NEC Turbo Duo, SNK Neo Geo, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Panasonic 3DO, and the Atari Jaguar.

Sega Genesis

  Released in 1989, the Sega Genesis was the system designed to take away the Nintendo Entertainment System's hold of the video game market, and it did exactly that. The Sega Master System had not quite done the job, and Sega knew that they would need many third party game developers for the Sega Genesis. The 16-bit Sega Genesis had superior graphics to anything out at the time. Sega started out madly advertising for both customers and developers, and by 1990, there were many developers making games for the console. This put Sega and the Sega Genesis ahead of Nintendo and the Nintendo Entertainment System. Released in 1992, the Sega CD was an add on for the Sega Genesis. It was placed on top of the Sega Genesis, and attached there, and played games on CDs instead of cartridges. This was designed to hold back the NEC Turbo Grafx 16, which it did. It started out selling very well indeed, and Sega later released a Sega CD II with the release of a second Sega Genesis. Released in 1994, the Sega 32X was yet another addition, cheaply putting Sega and the Sega Genesis into the 32 bit era. The Sega 32X had great 32 bit graphics, and some great games exclusively for the Sega 32X. But there were some major problems. It was too expensive, at one hundred sixty dollars when released. Also, almost all of the games were just Sega Genesis' games gone 32 bit on the Sega 32X. Can you say ripoff? Anyway, most of you bought it anyway, and it broke soon enough after you took unattached it from the Sega Genesis for some reason.

  Here are the specs. The Sega Genesis used a Motorola 68000 CPU, which was 16-bit and ran at 7.67 Mhz, had 64K RAM, and 64K Video RAM. It also had 320 x 224 resolution, 512 colors, 64 on screen colors, a mximum of 80 sprites, 6 channel stero sound, and cartridges that coulkd be anywhere from 256Kb to 4Mb.


  Here are the Sega CD specs. The Sega CD had a Motorolla 68000 running at 12.5 MHz, 6 MB Main RAM, 1MB Main ROM, 512 colora, 64 on screen colors, and eight sound channels.


  Here are the Sega 32X specs. The Sega 32X had two Hitachi SH2 processors both running at 23MHz, 320 x 224 resolution, 32K colors, and two sound channels to the Sega Genesis.

NEC Turbo Grafx 16

  Released in 1989, the NEC Turbo Grafx 16 is a refined NEC PC Engine, which was a Japanese video game system. Although it was supposedly 16 bit, the only 16 bit part was the graphics processor. The NEC Turbo Grafx 16 sold well as soon as it came out, but when the Sega Genesis came out, the fad was no longer the NEC Turbo Grafx 16, but the new Sega Genesis. Thereafter, hardly any more NEC Turbo Grafx 16s were sold. This was primarily NEC’s fault for making a system that didn’t live up to its own title.

  Here are the specs. The NEC Turbo Grafx 16 had an 8-bit HuC6280 CPU running at 7.16 Mhz. The Video Processor was a HuC6270, the Color Processor was a HuC6260, and the Color Pallet had 512 colors. There was a 256 x 216 resolution, six channel stereo sound, 8K RAM, 64K Video RAM, and the cartridges were normally 8 Megabits.

Nintendo Game Boy

  The Nintendo Game Boy was the first extremely successful portable gaming device. There were many who had fallen in the jungle trying to make a big hit with the new idea, and eventually Nintendo made a trail out of all the bodies, and released the Nintendo Game Boy in 1989. This was a craze that swept by every child and left a Nintendo Game Boy in their hands. This console wasn’t too expensive, there were many games made, and tons of accessories. There was another version of the Nintendo Game Boy was released later, the Nintendo Game Boy Pocket. This was smaller, and could fit inside your pocket. A rarer version was the Nintendo Game Boy Light, which was similar to the Nintendo Game Boy Pocket. Then in 1998, the Nintendo Game Boy Color was released. Another upgrade to the Nintendo Game Boy, the main difference was that this system had color. The Nintendo Game Boy Color could play all of the Nintendo Game Boy games. Therefore, it was a huge hit. There were tons of accessories available for both the GB and the GBC, including linking cables for multiple players, a printer, and a camera. Overall, the Nintendo Game Boy and the different versions were a big hit.

Nintendo Game Boy Color

  Here are the specs. The Nintendo Game Boy had a Z80 8 bit processor running at 4.19 Mhz, and 8K RAM. It also had 160 x 144 resolution, four colors, maximum of forty sprites, and four sound channels.

  Here are the specs for the Nintendo Game Boy Color. The Nintendo Game Boy Color was the same as the Nintendo Game Boy, except that it had a color screen, twice the memory, and the processor had twice the speed.

Atari Lynx

  Released in 1987, the Atari Lynx was the first handheld color video game system. The Atari Lynx is often overlooked, but it offered good multiplayer options, great graphics, and good controls. This system can be thought of as better than the Nintendo Game Boy, but killed by poor marketing and lack of sales, just like many Atari consoles at the time. Also, Atari did not get very much third party development for the Atari Lynx, resulting in less than one hundred games. The Atari Lynx offered some good ideas, such as swapping the controls to play left-handed. An Atari Lynx 2 was released later which was smaller than the original.

Sega Game Gear

  The Sega Game Gear, released in 1991, was meant to be in competition with the Nintendo Game Boy. It had many accessories, and some cool features, such as switching the controls to play left handed, and using accessories to make it a television, radio, and basically a portable Sega Master System. However, the Sega Game Gear was better than the Sega Master System, but not quite as good as the Nintendo Game Boy. It had problems with battery power, and there were less than two hundred games. Thus, it was Sega's first and last portable video game console.

  Released late in 1991, the NEC Turbo Express is a neat little portable system that played the same HuCards as the NEC Turbo Grafx 16. It was expensive at three hundred dollars, and still is. This is nice little version os the NEC Turbo Grafx 16 that any NEC Turbo Grafx 16 fan should own.

  Released in 1992, the NEC Turbo Duo was a mix of a NEC Turbo Grafx 16, and a NEC Turbo Grafx 16 CD. Containing both a HuCard slot, and a CD Drive, The NEC Turbo Duo can also play Super CD games.

  The SNK Neo Geo was similar to the RDI Halcyon, except it was slightly less expensive and it was slightly more successful. Released in 1994, a SNK Neo Geo costed around seven hundred dollars, and each game was around two hundred because they contained lots of RAM. A SNK Neo Geo CD was released in 1994 which converted all of the games for the original SNK Neo Geo into CDs. The original games were just adaptions of the full sized fighting games from the arcades. Another problem was that the SNK Neo Geo had less than one hundred games.

  The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or the SNES, was Nintendo’s late response to the Sega Genesis. It competed with the rest of the Sega Genesis’ attachments also. It had many games and accessories. This was a popular 16 bit system which can still easily be found today. A Super Nintendo Entertainment System 2 was released around the time of the release of the Nintendo 64. This version was the same except it was not as boxy, did not have an eject button, and also did not use the standard kind of RF switch, but had to use a moderator. The SNES fulfilled the Nintendo sound quality.

Panasonic 3DO


  Released in 1993, the Panasonic 3DO set itself up for failure by bragging too much before its own release. When it finally was released, it cost eight hundred dollars, and then never had very many good games. Also, Panasonic made a big mistake by letting other companies produce its game console. There is a following of this system, and there are some good games, but buying one when it was released might have been a waste of time since the first games were horrible.

Atari Jaguar


  Released in 1993, the Atari Jaguar was the first 64 bit system. It was a good system with great graphics, but lack of good software completely smashed it, along with the fact that the market was unsure if Atari was capable of making a good system with a good amount of third party developers. So, when Atari finally did it, the public didn't really bother too much, similar to the Boy Who Cried Wolf.  Also, the controllers look very weird, and nthey have seventeen buttons. There are not a whole bunch of games for this system, and the ones that actually exist are hard to find. There was a CD attachment later released which is very good.

 Here are the specs. The Atari Jaguar had a 16 bit Motorolla 68000 main processor running at 13.295MHz, and several graphics processors: a "Tom" processor running at 26.591 MIPS, a sprite engine serving as the object processor, and a blitter proccessor for logical operations. The Atari Jaguar had 24 bit color, and a "Jerry" Processor running at 26.6 MIPS for sound.

The Sixth Generation

  The Sixth Generation began in 1994 and ended in 1999. It included such video game consoles as the Goldstar 3DO, Sega Saturn, Sega Nomad, Nintendo Virtual Boy, Sony Playstation, and Nintendo 64.

Goldstar 3DO

  Released in 1995, the Goldstar 3DO was an expensive system that was cheaply made. Every once in a while the motorized disc tray slides out. Released at a price of four hundred dollars, the Goldstar 3DO had a weird controller system. The controllers themselves were regular, but instead of plugging in multiple controllers to the system, the second controller would plug into the top of the first controller. Panasonic allowed other companies to produce its game console, and this is what happened.

Sega Saturn

  Released in 1995, the Sega Saturn was a great system, often said to be better than the Sony Playstation. The graphics on the Sega Saturn were terrific, but it lacked the third party support, and Sega once again went back to its old habits of releasing the wrong games in the U.S. This system had potential. It could go online, and hook up with another Sega Saturn. Actually, if you buy two six player multitaps you could play with up to eleven other people. Thats pretty good.

Sega Nomad


  Released in 1995, the Sega Nomad was another portable video game console. This system had great compatibility with the Sega Genesis, and could even hook up to a television. This console used the Sega Genesis games, could use a Sega Genesis controller for 2 player games, and even used the Sega Genesis 2 RF Switch to hook up to a television. This was a cool little portable system that was directly compatible with its older brother the Sega Genesis.

Nintendo Virtual Boy

  Released in 1995, the Nintendo Virtual Boy looked very different from any other video game console. Looking at it you would see something not unlike a big pair of binoculars sitting on top of a tripod stand. The system was completely 3D, so when you stuck your face into the machine, you were completely surprised. The controller was a little weird. It had a handle on each side, and required you to use both thumbs for directional movement and also hitting the action buttons. This took some getting used to. There was one big problem with the Nintendo Virtual Boy. Almost everyone who played it complained of dizziness, backache, headache, disorientation, and mainly that when they stopped playing the colors red and black stood out like you wouldn’t believe. Therefore, the Nintendo Virtual Boy was unsuccessful, and there are less than thirty games.

Sony Playstation

  Released in 1995, the Sony Playstation was Sony's first videogame system. Sony had control over other markets, and thought they would enter the video game industry. This is much like NEC and their NEC Turbo Grafx 16. However, Sony did not make the same mistakes. They got their share of third party development, and there are almost too many games for the Sony Playstation. The main competition to the Sony Playstation is the Nintendo 64. Although released a year later, the Nintendo 64 was much anticipated and since Nintendo had good control over the market it sold well. There were three versions of the Sony Playstation, the first having three audio/video connectors in the back, the second just having a general A/.V connector, and the third, the PSOnes, known for its smaller size. All three play CDs, and are of a fair quality.

Nintendo 64

  Released in 1996, the Nintendo 64 was Nintendo's quantum leap in the end of the Sixth Generation. The Nintendo 64, known quit well as the N64, had great graphics, and absolutely gobs of great games and accessories. Four players could play at a time provided you owned four controllers. This was a major hit. Many games had great multiplayer options, and some games were meant for more than one player. It took the release of Nintendo's next system, the Nintendo Gamecube, to put this one out of action.

    Released in 1997, the Tiger Game.com was not a very succesful system. This handheld had way too much competition from the Nintendo Game Boy, and also, the developers did not do a good job of marketting, probably because they were accustomed to making small, rather dinky handhelds for small children, and selling them at little children-type toy shops. Anyway, the games were all two dimensional, and not very good. One good thing is that the system was capable of going online and reading email supposedly, and also functioned as a PDA. This however, did  not help it very much. A later version, the  Tiger Game.com Pocket Pro, was later released, only to be taken off the shelves soon.
